michaelk
how long have you been competing?how tall are you?what was your weight wen you started bodybuilding?how long did you train before doing your first comp?Firstly thanks for your kind words of support, it means a lot to hear and I truely appreciate them.I competed after only 6 months of training as a junior, barely out of the teens. So since 1990. I won the Novice Nats 70-80 in 1994, against a class field of 8 including Karl Cook who just won the overall in Taranaki (hope he doesnt mind me mentioning he didn't place-He's won more Open National Titles than me:)I've had a few breaks inbetween for family, career and injury though.I'm 178cm, or 5'10"Weighed 65kg when I started, at the same height. michaelk
Looking good Michael, how much size have you put on this year?14kg...since April.Keep in mind that I didn't train and hardly ate after the 2006 nationals for 6 months, so I weighed 87kg on APril 15 when I sisgned my Pro Application, I started eating and training on the 17th
Marcus
How come you had so much of a break after the nats? Looks like you've gained it back pretty quickly anyway
michaelk
How come you had so much of a break after the nats? Looks like you've gained it back pretty quickly anyway and then some, I was only just 94kg when I started my nationals diet, so am 7kg up on that. Why the break?a) mental and physical rest from bodybuilding focusb) family timec) nothing in mind to train for...I need a goald) lazynesse) all of the above.I usually train for about a month after a show to capitalize on the rebound with the increased fats and cals, but then am a big believer in having a break off after a show- 6 months was probably a bit too long though I admit  (as Ronnie called it..the off season) no training, no cardio, eat when and what I want. But then when its game on...its GAME ON!!
waldo
The title of the thread says countdown to Melbourne and New Zealand Pro. is that the elite show here, or are we getting a pro show as well. Frankly, it's hard to stay up with the play on all these new shows.

Pseudonym
Very impressive. So when you say the countdown has begun, do you mean you're dieting already - 18 weeks out? Or are you still trying to gain more mass now?
michaelk
Very impressive. So when you say the countdown has begun, do you mean you're dieting already - 18 weeks out? Or are you still trying to gain more mass now?If by dieting you mean did I carb load by having a home made banana split before the photos, instead of my late night shake (with Ice cream in it as I go to bed)....then yes I'm dieting hard Otherwise, no I'll be dieting down from 10weeks out, so are still eating and training the house down for more mass first. I'm hoping to hit 104kg before the diet proper begins. The title of the thread says countdown to Melbourne and New Zealand Pro. is that the elite show here, or are we getting a pro show as well. The Elite show is being run in conjunction with a full IFBB Pro show, expect to some of the real stars of World Bodybuilding coming to town! michaelk
so whats the prize money for the pro show? 1st prize is usually US$10,000 for Grand Prix showsLooking awesome and rather hot ! (hope the other half doesnt read that post :pfft:Thank you, you don't have to worry about Charlie...she's a southern girl too so she won't mind your compliment.Frankly, it's hard to stay up with the play on all these new shows.lol id have to agreeIt was always announced as a Pro Show run in conjunction with a regional (just like at the Melbourne Pro where they have the Victorian champs/ could be a good oppurtunity for some Elite competitors to get a show in the week before and a taste of the Aussie competition)... and an Elite class added to give the top competitors in NZ and at the regional event the chance to earn some money...and more importantly the prestige of winning the first Elite show in NZ. My grandmother has a picture of me before I started training where my kness are bigger than my thighs. The advantage I gained early was reading a Mike Mentzer article that said to only have 30secs rest between sets, while I don't do that now, it taught me how to train intensly.ONE rule? As a bodybuilder you have to be COMPLETE- Learn to hate/love training all bodyparts equally, not just you favourites/the easy ones/the fastest responding ones/the ones the chicks or your mates think are great. Be constantly aware of what your weaknesses are so you can fix them before the judges spot them.1.70cm tall? check out Dexter, Lee Labrada, Lee Priest, Silvio Samuel - there's plenty of good short guys, not all in the Heavys= dexter was the 1st bantamweight to win the Overall in Florida. I've always said- Big is good/best is Better. When I won the Australasians in the Novices it was an open weight category class, i was 85kg, the guy that got 2nd was 95kg about the same height, the 4th place getter was 68kg (he won the Open Australian champs later that year) and 5th was 102kg. Good judges in the IFBB look beyond size to balance, structure and condition as well.this pic was taken this year after I hadn't trained or eaten properly for 6 months and weighed 87kg. michaelk
PM me your mobile number (or one of the mods if you want to put the pic on the site) and I'll send you a closeup pic I took of them a few weeks back, I don't have the facility to transfer the pic from my phone to the computer.Something many novices aren't aware of is that muscles look different at different angles, at this angle they don't look special, at the angle the judges sit at they look damn good -Thats why Moe was complimenting me on them the other day.
