  • 2 months later...

okay well ive had a rough couple of last months because ive been trying out a lot of different sports to figure out what i like! and ive decided upon taekwondo. I have been doing the odd training on bodybuilding but nothing major.

i still want to but i dont want to gain too much weight because then ill have to fight taller, bigger guys than me. so i think ill train for strength and try to minimize ( the sarcoplasmic hypertrophy?) the gain in size and just get that awesome ripped look.

here is a photo of me taken just tonight :) lol its not very good coz had no1 too take for me. chur.

current weight 74.5 (i think thats a gain of almost 5 kg from when i first posted on here)?

Hard to tell because of the different camera angles, but I think you're looking bigger than your first photos in this log. Certainly bigger in the shoulders and chest. Good stuff!

As for what you should do regarding taekwondo versus bodybuilding, only you can make that decision. However, bear in mind that even if you have to fight bigger guys, it's only because you're getting bigger and stronger yourself! :)

i dont do martial arts but have a few mates who are hardout and ones at worlds champs right now, but taekwondo is pretty shit. rather spend yr time learning something more effective where u can actaully f*ck someone up if they mess wit u rather than doing pussy high kicks

just my 2c

I second that, join a kickboxing or boxing gym bro, whereabouts do you live?

Yeah i've always wanted to do kick boxing! im doing TKD because i enjoy it, not for self defense. I would like to train TKD twice a week and kick boxing twice a week. I might go along to a few of the kick boxing clubs and check them out and see what times they are on. I live in wellington.

When i said id be fighting bigger guys in TKD, i meant taller ones with long reaching legs lol sure i might be stronger than them but theyll end up with all the points because they can reach me with less effort :(

if i wasnt into bodybuilding my next choice would be fighting, if yr gonna do 2 disiplines 2x a week it would make more sense to take up 2 that compliment each other if u know wat im saying e.g kickboxing and judo or jujitsu. one with strikes and one with grapples and throws.

not trying to tell u wat to do or anything lol, but yea enjoyment is number 1!!! u got tht right! if u dnt enjoy it then dont do it simple

easing back into it slowly :) trying to get technique right!! made the mistake of not learning it correctly first time round. hopefully going to try and get someone from powerhouse in wellington to help me further with this. ankle is sore at the moment because i nailed myself after bailing a double backflip :(

haha look at my reaction when i finally land one tho :)

or one step better (then squats and deadlifts) you could do ceans, jerks and snatches.

these will have a direct effect on your jumping abiltiy.

oh and :P at mike

 That IS true though, but not really for him IMO. He probably ends up training his Rate of Force Developement a lot from all the jumping he does anyway. If he just mainly focused on getting his posterior chain strength up, I'm sure he'd get a lot more from it in terms of jumping ability. ;)

today :D

SQUAT! 2 sets of 5 at 80 kg, felt my form wasnt very good and was leaning to my right leg to much so went down to 70 kg and busted another 3 sets of 5

MILITARY PRESSES! busted out 5 sets of 5 at 28 kg

BENT ROW! busted out 2 sets of 5 at 60 kg, was using momentum to get it up tho so went down to 50 then busted out another 3 sets at 50

pullups 2 x 8

tricep dips 1 x 8

pretty good day, the whole muscle imbalance thing is a real pain in the ass, i have to lower the weight mainly because one side is compensating for the other, so i guess ill just wait it out till the other side (left side) gets stronger.

and im having a bit of trouble knowing what i should do at the gym? i constantly read so much stuff on the internet that contradicts itself that im always confused. can anybody recommend a good powerlifting book (not bodybuilding, because my main goal is strength) that covers all the basics? the staple of powerlifting, how to construct a proper workout, periodization, other exercises such as the rotator cuff ones to prevent blowouts during bench? gah, so overwhelmed lol.

remember strength is speed specific... If you train fast (cleans + snatches)

you can lift still lift the same weight slower (DL + squats). But the oposite is not true...

Its true that increased strength (acquired throught DL and squats)will have a postive effect on clean and snatch preformance. But increased strength will have little impact on jumping ablitily(unless they are preformed in an explosive manner).

a weightlifter will always out jump a powerlifter (even a powerlifter who regularly preforms depth jumps etc).

sorry for hyjack haydzor.

squats 5x5 at 50kg <--- frick! im really trying to get this technique down, so like i turn and face the mirror at side angles and i see my lower back has been curving this whole frikin time, so i mainly did really slow squats trying to keep lower back un-curved. i will take some videos and post up on here, hopefully you guys will be able to tell me what else i am doing wrong.

bench 5x5 at 50kg <-- feels okay, will take video of bench too :)

deadlift 5x5 at 50kg <-- will video this too, fricking form :(

Chins 2x8

Dips 2x8

Sorry bro but I have to disagree here.

Strength WILL have a positive effect on jumping ability. How how you can jump is determined by the power of your body. Power is how fast you can "activate" your strength. It works in percentages. For example:

Person A & B have the same bodyweight.

In half a second, person A can "activate" (can't think of a better word) 85% of his strength.

In the same amount of time person B can only activate 75%.

Person A's maximal force in that movement is 100lbs, Person B's maximal force is 400lbs (he's bin squattin'!).

In half a second Person A can produce 85lbs of force (85% of maximal force)

In half a second Person B can produce 300lbs of force.

You tell me who's going to jump higher. ;)

There are some limitations to this of course. But that's pretty much how it works. I'll get a source later.

Oh and haydz, stick ya chest out when your squatting, that'll help stop your back from curving. And if possible, get someone else to critique your form. Looking sideways into a mirror while trying to squat will surely throw it off.
