Feeling the affects of this dumb dare thing I did last night - eat 6x Steak & Cheese Pies in 12 minutes, including eating anything that comes back up. Probably one of the dumbest things I've ever done, I never want to see another pie in my life.

Lack of updates lately, been busy with assignments and that. I'll just do a summary of the 4 sessions I've missed logging. Pretty much plateaud all of a sudden. I thought I'd last at least until the meet and then do something different afterwards but no.

Last Friday: Deads

Was driving all day, dehydrated, hungry, training alone at a crappy gym. Went for 250kg x 3 on Sumo Deads and not surprisingly couldn't lockout the second, probably actually could've but wasn't in the mode to grind. Didn't do much else.

Last Saturday: ME Bench

Pretty average session still in Nelson. Worked up to 110kg x 3 on raw bench, wasn't too hard. Tried to do Boards but only had one spotter so that was short-lived. Did some other light tris and other stuff. Left.

Monday: Squats

Last warm-up set was 190kg x 1 with suit straps up and belt. Went perfectly - walk out was good, sat back really well, got really deep, everything was tight, felt like I could've got 5. Added wraps and went for 220kg x 3, everything turned to crap and got stapled by the second. Figured I've overdone it recently and called it a night.

Wendesday: DE Bench

Regular bar weight for this cycle but starting the bands part of it. Speed was ok. Did some Reverse Band work and called it a day again. Highlight of the workout was people's reactions to my new haircut, coz there was f*ck all else going on

Going to have a small break from Squats & Sumo Deads my next two lower sessions. I'll do some GMs and Conventionals instead for this next week of training. Then drop the volume a tad the week after. Week after that hit my openers for the meet (probably 220/135/245). For the meet a total of 650kg would be by no means unrealistic but still a challenge, so that's the goal at this point.

Trying to work myself out of a rut...

I'm not sure I want to know this, but how many pies came back up? :?

In total probably about 1 pie. Was pretty sick eating it again...

What have you done to your hair mate lol? and are u at the uni gym ? think im gunna have a train with tim down there

Haha, you seen it? Bebo? Nah bro I don't train at Uni Gym, train at a Powerlifting gym in town.

my boyfriend wants to do powerlifting and i told him to look up pacificbarbenders website but it didn't have anything from a TONKA only Reuben Simanu, where is the programme from Tonka?

Tonka = Reuben Simanu.

I nearly threw up reading about all those Pizzas!

He must be one fat (and strong) mofo!

Not trying to be rude, but why is your bench so much less than you Dead? I can't view your vid, but have you had someone check your form? And how much do you weigh?

I have never used straps or a belt on a dead, and maxed out at 190kg for 2 with grip problems a few months back, I like to do everything raw (Grip strength is important with boxing) - Any idea what they would add to my 1RM?? I see there is a big difference when you put the weights above. Might be worthwhile biting the bullet and trying them out.

Entry #212: Friday 28/03/2008

1. Conventional Deadlifts

Equipment: Belt

2 x 60kg/132lbs x 5

1 x 85kg/187lbs x 5

1 x 110kg/242lbs x 3

1 x 135kg/298lbs x 1

1 x 160kg/353lbs x 1

*added belt, mixed grip*

1 x 185kg/408lbs x 1

1 x 210kg/463lbs x 3 PR

Surprisingly easy PR. Last time I did these I hit a PR of 200kg x 3 which was around 5 weeks ago. Granted, that was fairly easy too but this was no sweat. Tried out a new Conventional form and I like it. Because I have such a short torso, when I tried to pull my shoulders back, arch hard and look uo, I was forced to pretty much stiff-leg it. Today I relaxed my shoulders and upper back and looked down which lengthened my torso a lot off the floor, allowing me to sit back better into it... Though I didn't sit back all that well, but that should come with practice. Good for 220-230kg x 3 IMO. Sumo has boosted my Conventional pull a lot more than I had thought, maybe I should revert back again??? (not before the meet)

Video:

2a. GHRs

3 x BW x 10

2b. Pull Throughs (wide stance)

3 x 66kg/146lbs x 10

Pre-exhausted my posterior chain with the GHR and then went straight onto these to make this primarily a hip movement (and because 66kg = the stack).

3. Seated Cable Row

4 x 84kg/185lbs x 10

4. Wide Grip Palms In Pulldowns

4 x 60kg/132lbs x 10

5. EZ-Bar Curls

2 x 35kg/77lbs x 10

Will lighten it next time and do more sets stricter. Need to stop slacking off on the guns otherwise I'll eventually tear one pulling.

Extras

Standing Abs - 3 x 48kg x 15, 56kg x 10

Band Hip Adduction - 5 x 12

Other notes:

Finally a good workout falls again. Sort of not due to luck. During my next offseason Westside-esque cycles I'll need to add more and more periodization. Lesson learned.

I take much offense to this.

Nah jokes :P

You don't have to tell me my Bench is crap, I know. I'm a Powerlifter bro. And train at one of the best Powerlifting gyms in the country, which means I'm under the watchful eyes of people who have done a lot at an International level. My form is fine, I think. I'm built for Deadlifting - I have a short torso and long arms. This also means I'm not exactly built for Benching (why my Bench sucks). Also I don't get much poundage out of it yet (still a newbie) but I lift in a bench shirt. My shirted max has come up about 20kg in the last 3 months. Just give me until before I turn 19 and it'll be up there, don't worry ;)

I have never used straps or a belt on a dead, and maxed out at 190kg for 2 with grip problems a few months back, I like to do everything raw (Grip strength is important with boxing) - Any idea what they would add to my 1RM??

Impossible to tell, depends how much your grip(straps)/core(belt) is holding you back. If it's nothing then you won't get anything. If you don't use chalk/mixed grip already then use it, it'll help you hold onto the bar more than enough but still work your grip hard.

I see there is a big difference when you put the weights above. Might be worthwhile biting the bullet and trying them out.

I'm not sure what you mean by this?

Entry #214: Monday 31/03/2008

Prehab/Warm-Ups/Extras

Butterfly Stretch - 3 x 30 sec

BTN Press - 3 x 20kg x 8

Standing Abs - 2 x 45kg x 15

1. Cambered Bar Good Mornings

1 x 60kg/132lbs x 8

1 x 75kg/165lbs x 5

1 x 90kg/198lbs x 3

1 x 105kg/231lbs x 1

1 x 135kg/309lbs x 3 PR

Form slipped on the top set even though it was pretty speed weight. Might just keep the weight for these ~90kg and do them for more reps as assistance.

2. Squats

Equipment: Belt, Cent 42, loose wraps

Worked up to...

1 x 215kg/474lbs x 1

Easy single.

3. GHR

1 x BW x 10

1 x BW + 5kg x 6

Other notes:

Just an easy workout, was up almost all the night before doing a Math assignment so would've most certainly gone crap if I went hard and probably would've regressed mentally some more and fried my CNS. Not worth the risk :)

Entry #215: Wednesday 02/04/2008

Warm-Ups/Prehab/Extras

Butterfly Stretch - 3 x 30 sec

Squat Stretch - 3 x 30 sec

Cable External Rotation - 2 x 15

Face Pulls - 3 x 15

GHR - 3 x BW x 8

Standing Abs - 48kg x 15, 54kg x 10

Band Hip Adduction - 3 x 15

Standing Calf Raise - 2 x 40kg x 20

1. Speed Bench Press (Bands)

Bands: 2 x Mini's around pins

1 x 40kg/88lbs x 5

2 x 60kg/132lbs x 3

2 x 65kg/143lbs x 3

4 x 70kg/154lbs x 3

Took a video to see how fast I was.

2. Bench Press w/ 20kg Chains

1 x 60kg/132lbs x 5

1 x 80kg/176lbs x 5

1 x 90kg/198lbs x 5

Based on how much of the chains were deloading I'd estimate this weighed 97.5 at the bottom and 105 at the top. I'll use 30kg of chains next time to up the difference a bit.

3. Skull Crushers

3 x 35kg/77lbs x 8

Other notes:

Next three workouts: 220kg x 3 Conventional friday, 145kg Bench sunday, 245kg Squat monday. Today's video:

Entry #216: Friday 04/04/2008

Biiiiiiig night thursday, not good before a training day but it was the end of term party so meh.

Worked up to 220kg/485lbs x 1 on Deadlifts, didn't feel like I could get the three so I didn't attempt. I was stuffing up my leverage off the floor for some reason.

Then did some GHRs/Rows.

Entry #217: Sunday 06/04/2008

Warm-Ups/Prehab

Butterfly Stretch

Cable External Rotation

Face Pulls

1. Bench Press

Equipment: 44 F6 shirt, wraps, belt

2 x 60kg/132lbs x 6

1 x 80kg/176lbs x 2

1 x 100kg/220lbs x 1

1 x 120kg/265lbs x 2 (3 Board)

1 x 120kg/265lbs x 2 (2 Board)

1 x 130kg/287lbs x 1 (1 Board)

1 x 135kg/298lbs x 0 (chest, no touch)

1 x 145kg/320lbs x 1 PR!

135kg: Only had one spot, didn't want to risk dumping it so I didn't try and touch. I should be able to touch this weight, maybe my opener.

145kg: Felt like it was coming down to my belly but I managed to row it back to my chest. Came up clean and pretty easily. 150kg is well within range at the meet. This PR puts me into the 1400lb total club, plus I still have PRs in Bench again, Squat and a big one in Deadlift.

Will upload the video on Tuesday.

Going to attempt a 245/250kg Squat tomorrow.

Dropping the volume hard now. Things are coming together and I feel like I'm well on track!
