Thanks Drizzt, nice gains yourself. What is it, like 100kgs you've put on your squat this year?

Thanks man, yeah I used 180 as my max for Smolov back in May (I think it was May?), and landed that 280 today, so about 100 in 7-8 months I suppose.

But this thread ain't about me, enjoy the new year bro, stay strong 8)

are you for real?

WOW strong natural gains.

Dunno if this is sarcastic or not, but definitely natural 8) (haven't even been able to take my pre-workout stims :()

are you for real?

Yep I'll chuck up some comparison vids later, but I don't want to derail this thread, sorry Tom :shifty:

No, I dont mind Drizzt. 100kgs increase in half a year is truly amazing.

Ok, I didn't want to derail Tom's thread any further so split it out here. I guess this is the stereotypical Powerlifting version of posting pics, as I'm in no shape currently to be taking photos without a shirt on like young Tom has (nor am I in the 93kg "aesthetic" class :pfft:).

But here is how my squats have progressed from April, to yesterday anyway.

(inb4 Stan Walker on first squat, not my choice!)

Now, on topic: drizzt, you real brah?

Yes, yes I am :smoke:

good shit man,impressive

8)

Cheers JH! Not sure if you can tell much of a difference in my legs between the 170 squat, and the 280, but that's probably the best example I can give of leg development over the year with high-vol squatting (since I didn't take measurements :shifty:)

Epic, like that 170 was borderline going up or down...but you :smoke: all the other squats

Thanks MK 8) I thought the 280 looked just as dodgy ha ha, but I can still remember that 170 and being really embarrassed at how hard it was. I had gone backwards at that point (hit a fairly easy 175 at a novice comp a month earlier) which is what spurred me on to give these crazy high vol templates a bash

Nice Vid Drizzt,  good montage should quieten a few keyboards.

Liking the new sig  just imagine if you followed the other 99% rolleyessign.gif you would be a real Mr Optimal Gain Guy now.

Cheers Wa!

Honestly I don't want to harp on about training styles and stuff too much, but if anybody takes anything from my progress (and this is gonna sound cheesy as, but...), I hope it's that they shouldn't feel limited by what people tell you that you can do. If I had listened to that, I may have only hit a 200 squat this year, and I would've been pretty happy with it - because everybody says 20-30kg on your squat in a year is damn good!

As it is now, I hit a 280, and I'm annoyed I didn't quite get to the 300 because I know it's there

[/cheesiness]

D,

Its not cheesy what your are saying, for a lot of lifters the environment is not there to induce these sort of gains. As you understand now, it is more mental than anything else, we are all in some way limited by our beliefs.

300 is there for the taking Drizzt, annoyed makes you hungrier, it is like unfinished business, be a good year this year.

Thanks OB1, I'll get it shortly

That's some amazing progress in such a short amount of time. What were your gains like in the other lifts?

Thanks! And damn, was hoping nobody would ask :pfft:

Let me just preface the gains with a little bit of background.

When I decided to start hammering my squat, bench wasn't terrible when compared to it (140), and my dead was probably further along than a lifter of my experience should've had (250).

So when I started this intense squat volume, the focus was to improve squat, and hopefully maintain the others.

During the first Smolov we ran a low-vol bench template... and I had started moving my grip wider on the bench for a shorter ROM. Made me immediately shift slightly more weight, but I ended up pinching a nerve in my shoulder (squat grip also contributed). Because of this, I dropped bench for a while, and didn't really pick it back up until September.

During the 5 x 5 in Sept, I took my bench from a grinding 140 touch n go lift, to a competition paused 140 - probably equates to a 5-10kg bench gain. Then for the final Smolov of the year, I punched in my bench max as 145 on Smolov Jr (although I hadn't actually hit it previously, I guessed I could), and came out with a 150 touch and go. So overall in the same time as Squat, 10kg on bench without really training it until Sept onwards.

Deadlifts I actually didn't touch properly until September, kinda like the bench - too hard to do alongside all of the squatting. But they were already good and I knew if I focused on squat, it would only help my deadlift, so I wasn't too worried about training it. Only period I actually trained them was, again, 5 x 5 in the leadup to the BBro. From this, I got about 15kg out of it - hit a 265 in comp.

Deadlifts are a funny beast for me, as I have no trouble getting any weight I've tried off the floor and above my knees, but my hips are slack and don't come through quick enough (technical issue). Once this is fixed, my deadlift gains should be pretty quick/good, and my squat and dead will be about the same.

Sick stuff Drizzt. Nice work.

Matt (ApriliaRS) you look so sick in that last clip! Beast mode!! So glad your bulking instead of cutting.. you were a horrible looking 75kg :)

Cheers bro!

Yeah Matt is getting swole in the 90s now, his arms are about as big as his quads!

nice work drizt

We will be expecting 150kg put on your squat this year drizz. Now you know how to get dem optimal gainz.

Lol but srs at this rate aren't you going to be a contender for setting a nz record?

all-time NZ Open record is 385kgs set by Derek Pomana

current NZ Open record squat is 350kgs set by neil lauaki last year at nationals. hes good for 370  wouldve set the record too!, Had he not bombed in the deadlift at north islands

so even though he squated 3whites, it didn't count for a record because he bombed?
