True Measure Of Ones Strength

Curious as to what your guys opinions are on gauging ones overall strength. Is there one excercise ( such as the squat, dead or bench) or is it a combo of these excercises and more. Everyone seems to always ask "How much ya bench?" but to me its not using a heap of lower leg power. So whats your guys opinions?

If I had to pick a single exercise, I'd say the deadlift. There isn't a lot of ways you can cheat on a deadlift (as opposed to half squats/"spotted" bench), and theres not a heck of a lot of technique involved - in the sense that most people can just bend over, pick up a bar, and stand up straight with it

this is how I monitored my strength over my lifting career. If my deads up my other lifts are up aswell.

Yeah this is a good call, and takes away the technique difficulties of clean and jerk.

Interesting that most people (especially the gear journals) don't use the deads to record how their strength is progressing. I would like to see this more.

(A recent journal actually listed a barbell shrug as a measurement of progress.... srsly?)

Difficult to identify a single exercise. The problem with the power clean is that it is technically difficult to do. Most people turn it into a reverse curl.

I have a powerlifting bias so the big 3 are my measure for guys and girls I help out. I know that professional rugby in NZ use the squat, bench and weighted chin as part of their testing battery.

Really? How did you find this out?

I would have though they would have the deadlift in there also.

Contacts bro. I'm not sure of their rationale. I expect it is based on what happens in other pro sports.

Squats - lower body strength

Bench - pushing/explosive power

Weighted chins - upper body strength

The deadlift would be too foreign for many sportsmen and proper technique would be an issue. The squat would also be advanced for many sportsmen but even an unweighted bar used to squat with would show many body weaknesses.

Doc has the contacts alright, his brother is a world renowned sports scientist and is the current Sports Scientist for the NZ Academy of Sport as well as a strength and conditioning coach for some of NZ's elitest athletes!

Whole new meaning to Bro science then?

I'd say more strong man type stuff, never done it myself but it seems the most relevant in terms of real world strength. Not often your under a perfectly balanced barbell.

agreed...atlas and natural stones come to mind

Technique again might be the issue here bro.
