GENETICALLY GIFTED OR PARENTAL INFLUENCE..........

Ok so Ive had this discussion with a couple lads and I feel its a goodie for debate... do you think people are born with the potential to be world beaters in all sports and all aspects of life including being a mathematical genius, musician, world class athlete... ANYTHING IN LIFE.

My thought being its not generally genetics, sure there are things where genetics help i.e bodybuilding where being 6foot 2inches is a big advantage but I believe its in the parental guidance, a talented musician has talented musicians for parents and such hears music from the time he/she is born learning harmony, notes, pitch, lyrics etc and learning to be a top guitarist or what have you.

Tiger woods dad taught him from birth to play golf he had a golf set at I think two years of age teaching him drilling him making tiger live eat sleep breath golf teaching him to be a world beater, now if tigers father adopted me at birth I firmly believe id be a pro golfer right now ......

YOUR THOUGHTS PLEASE PEOPLES//..............

Kiwi kid Jacko Gill won some junior Shot put world gold medal. His old man won national shot put titles and his old lady national discus. And I think jackos sister competes in the world circuit.

So as you could imagine bit of an influence through parent guidance to be successful here!

So yea. Well done 2 them

I believe it has to be a combination of both. The physical/physiological/mental base has to be there, but the skills or specifics have to be taught. You're not going to pick up a shotput for the first time and break world records. No matter how strong and 'genetically gifted' you are, you have to be well practiced in correct technique etc. I also believe that two people from the same starting point, given the exact same diet and training, same hours of sleep, basically any variable you could think of, one will make better improvements than the other, due to better suited genetics to the task at hand.

The old nature versus nurture debate, eh? There was a doco on TV last night showing just how much is controlled by our genes. They studied it by comparing twins. Even personality attributes, which you'd think would come from our upbringing, seemed to have a significant genetic influence.

Hi Fella....

Think I can offer some input into your discussion...

I have found naturaly high levels of testosterone have a lot to do with the physical performance of the type of athletes I have known....

Two of my former training partners in the UK produced very high levels of testosterone naturally....

Both excelled at athletics & rugby at school, both stood out way above any one else, winning everything between then...

Upon leaving school one became a pro rugby player representing the UK, & the other a champion bodybuilder & powerlifter..... & was Northern Britains strongest man for 7 years...

My girlfriend was a international swimmer & rugby player representing the UK in both sports...

She was also found to produce excessive amounts of testosterone, way about normal levels found in women....

She again excels in any physical activity she takes part in...

All lucky bastards I think..... except for anyone associating with them because their levels of agression at times is concerning....

All inherited this from their parents, & they from theirs.... So as far as physical performance is concerned, i think genetics has a lot to do with at least having a head start to begin with, a positive attitude, & mental determination is all down to the individual... But again if you know you are physically better than anyone else, I suppose that goes a long way towards having a positive attitude & confidence in your ability....

Well thats what I think...

I dont believe genetics has alot to do with being great in everything. Me for instance, my family genetics is on the small side, my father and grandfather being about 6 foot my mum was 5'6 or 7 and this is both on my mother and father's side. Here i am born and average height and weight till i turned 14 and then all hell broke loose. I ended up being 6'7 at 16 and stopped growing but my weight went all the way to 115kg and today at 30 im 145kg. I also have been a professional rugby player for 8 years and at my fittest i was 125kg. I always exelled at averything at school excpet for academics, for that i was just plain lazy. So yes i do think genetics play a small part but i think alot of luck is also on your side if you are born bigger faster and stronger than everybody else plus a realy good attitude.

Hope this answer helps.

Nurture via nature.

Genetics set some tendencies and hard boundaries. Environment determines the final product.

Put another way. If you don't have the genes to be a top athlete in whatever sport (sprinter, marathoner, shotputter, whatever), you will never get there no matter how hard you work.

On the flip side, a great work ethic can overcome a lot of disadvantages even if it can't carry you to the top. A genetic wonder that never does anything with the talent won't get anywhere.

Fair question, but really Golf, the only real physical part of that is the actual 10km they got to walk every day. I honestly believe that golf is a virtualy 95% skill and 5% physicallity. yes i probably will be a pro golfer if Tiger's dad was my trainer. Yes he also works realy freakin hard to get there.

But things like rugby, powerlifting, bodybuilding, NFL and so on are sports that demand so much of your body to be physically grown that you can take it only so far and then you either make it or you dont and your body is going to tell to back off it doesnt matter how hard you tried, but you gave it your best.

i myself at school won every cross country and smashed a record by 2+minuets. And won regional titles with basically f*ck all training. But then turned 16 and became a bad arse and needed to smoke cigarettes, so failed.

I know a couple guys who have destroyed multiple records at school in various athletic events, but now are fat and lazy.

But if we had the nurturing could have possibly reached our genetic potential, and blitz the field at higher lvs!

So imo nurturing is a pretty big factor in some cases.

Was just a specific example not an arguement, I agree that sports like you have described require natural genetic ability so the general consesus is its genetic ability that needs nurturing  !!

I believe everything we are starts with our genes and that they determine our potential for everything. And that nurture is what develops that potential.

I think even things like motivation and ambition are influenced heavily by genetics as is our memory and ability to process language and information.

If anybody watch that thing on twins the other night it gave some insight into this topic. Basically they are starting to realize alot of things in our everyday operation as humans comes down to genetics (even the gray hairs and moles ect).

Sorry can't find a link for a video but it's called the "secret life of twins" it's a BBC doco.

Personally I'm in the genes play a huge role camp but ultimately it comes down to environment.

Sorry fella can't agree while golf has a huge skill factor strength is also a major part of the game especially at the pro level. Massive stresses on joints and muscles occur with every shot. If your not physically up to the task your in trouble. Tiger is a great example of how weight training is being pushed by top level coaches even more in the sport these days.

My 10 cents......

To be elite in any sport you must be born with the physical characteristics to achieve. No amount of hard graft will make me place in the Olympics 100 metres final!

I am a grafter. I have acheived reasonable results in my chosen sports. However I could never compete in SM against Pudzianowski or Zavikas, or PLing against Coan or Karwoski.

That said a genetically gifted person, in the physical sense, will never achieve elite status without the right psyche and dedication to the game. PMan suggests this is a genetic trait also, but I wonder if this can be nurtured, in the sense of 'building a great work ethic'.

Just another thought - I remain convinced that sports at the extremes such as 100m & marathon are fully dictated by physical traits (number of fast/slow twitch fibres, VO2 max etc).

However could events in between (say 800m, 1500m, multisports, team sports etc) be events that a solid work ethic could lead a less gifted athlete (again referring to physical traits) to achieve at international level?

Nate
