Yeah he is, he will bench as normal but dont know if his lowerback/midback/glut will allow him to go very heavy on squat and dead as yet, but we will see. he has gta get a reasonable total to do the nationals and hopefully the Oceanias in december so time will tell...

yeah he said he thinks he'll have to go light on the squats. so you guys train together?

sort of, havnt lately because of his injury but generally we do, we train with two other guys at BTS Mt Eden, how do you find training at the Y

how does BTS rate as a gym? i know where it is but can't say that i've ever been inside. training at the Y is all good aye, not the best gym in town but it's got all the basics and it's a hell of a lot cheaper than most gyms. i tend to go in the evenings when it's not so busy because during peak hours it can get pretty damn cramped for space. at least it's got two floors so all the cardio nuts go upstairs :lol:

have you and mike ever had jobs at the same gym?

BTS is good, got evrything we need for training, people are good at the best of times, i dont train at my gym because i dont like being talked to durin a workout. Nah we havnt aye, probably a good thing because we always used to get in trouble at school when we were in the same class haha, so do u/have u compted?

yeah i don't blame you for not training at the gym you work at, that would be so annoying. I've never competed aye im still young though, may consider it in the future but not sure at this stage. how old were you when you did your first comp?

re original question. I was stuffing around at a 60kg bench press for probably the best part of a year. (Not quite as bad as it sounds as I was doing a lot of running and worried more about conditioning).

Last several months my goals have changed a fair bit and I've started squating and deadlifting (finally!!!) and eating heaps more. While doing virtually nothing different to my chest training, my bench press has gone up to an 80kgx5. (Have done 1 rep at 90kg but a bit scary without a spot).

Really just an anecdotal example of what a few people have said above actually doing the goods but thought it might be helpful.

Havinging someone spot you when you bench will help even if you dont have a training partner, gives you masses more confidence to do additional reps which is good for the head and to push the muscles further. its a great feeling doing 120kg for 6 -8 reps cause you then know that the magic 140kg is not far away.

Last Year, Nationals August Squat 240kg BEnch 135kg Deadlift 225kg Total 600kg

very strong squat! did you do it raw?

your prob just doing BP once per week with maximal effort (using as much weight and doing as many reps as you can.) Do a second day using sub maximal weights 40 - 50kg for you and push the weight up as fast as possible.
