CARB DEPLETE

1) Just under a cup of Rolled Oats, Protein Powder 30g, Banana 200g Chicken Breast, 9 egg whites, 1 whole egg

2) Large shredded chicken & lite mayo can, free veges (cucumber, tomatoes, capsicum, carrott)

3) 125g Express Basmati Rice, Large tin tuna (generally eat 4/5th of this shit!) 9 egg whites, 1 whole egg

4) 125g Express Basmati Rice, Protein 40g with water, 9 egg whites, 1 whole egg

5) Banana, Protein 40g70g with water,

6) 250g White Fish, free veges (stir fry veges)

7) Protein 40g with water

Basic idea is to replace carbs with protein as close to gram for gram while leaving fats the same. Big breakfast!!

Day two of carb deplete done & dusted, and some really strange shit just happened!! Need some explanations from those who know, or alternately I'll take theories!

So my last carbs of any great amount was a banana at 5pm Sun. Monday I was pretty flat by 4pm and managed an okay leg workout (couple of sets leg press 10x320's and machine stuff), calves & abs. PM Posing / Cardio was pretty tough, and AM cardio today (Tues) was a rough 40 minutes on the stepper! :pfft:

I was okay at work today and managed a fair bit of work, but by 4pm I felt like I was starting to crash. Was nearly at 48 hrs into deplete so expected this, however once I started training at 6pm I managed a good Chest, Bicep & tri's session and I was holding an amazing pump. My arms, chest and shoulders were vascular as hell (tho flattish?). One of the boys said I must be cheating LOL!

I then had a good posing session and did the easiest 30 mins X-trainer I've done in weeks - I had it set at level 14 and maintained around 1000 cals/hour rate (bullshit numbers I reckon but!). I smiled, kept my eyes open and pushed hard the whole time then wandered down and chatted to the boys - unheard of in the last 6 weeks?!!

Anyhow something changed, and very quickly? Any ideas where that energy came from? One suggestion was that a metabolic change may have occured with an upregulation of some enzyme? Maybe some part of protein metabolism upping as glycogen levels fall?

I can't explain it - I had to check my calculations for replacing carbs with protein to see if I'd put a whole bunch more calories in my diet by mistake!!! But no!

I'm definately not complaining about feeling so good 50 hours into a carb deplete, just perplexed!

Thoughts lads?

I have a theory on what happened to you Nate. You tapped in big time to burning fat for fuel. There is a whole lot more energy in fat than carbohydrates. Try burning a piece of pure fat and see how big the flame is and how long it burns. You have to get right down into low carbs to have what you experienced happen and you can often feel like shit getting there.

It may last or it may not but enjoy it while it lasts. Usually you can be feeling pretty rough but if you take your time warming up then once your into your workout if you dig really deep and focus hard you can do some amazing stuff that normally you wouldn't be able to.

I wondered that briefly? It's either protein or fat getting used to fuel things and 9cal/g fat wins over 4cal/g protein everytime if you can utilise it?

I'll enjoy it for sure Rigger - my last deplete in 2000 was no fun at all, and was a lot less severe than this one (1/2 carbs Mon, 1/2 again Tues, zero Weds versus Zero Mon - Weds!).

looking very lean :D

how much further are u gonna take it?

Not lean enough really if I have to stand next to guys like Rigger, Soundsgood, Kristian Bray, Richard Parnham and Kagan Orton!

But considering 13.5 weeks ago I was around 18% BF and just started a diet to support Lisa, I'm happy enough with where I'm at for my first comp in 12 years! Kinda like losing my BBing virginity all over again! Will set me up well for later in the year when I have time to really nail my condition.

Is it possible that even though you lacked the fats normally required you have dropped into Ketosis? You'll be a fat burning machine right now Nate!

Optimass might have a better idea?

CnP from other thread:

And so it continues....the 40mins cardio this morning (X-trainer) was a breeze & kept pushing myself harder. Hasn't been that easy in weeks?

That said I was pretty tired after breakfast, but a box of fluffies again at work this morning?

I'm going with metabolism shift of some kind - maybe upregulation of lipase or protease type enzymes allowing either protein or fats to be utillised more efficiently as fuel? Not gonna over analyse it - just enjoying it while it lasts!!! Hopefully still carb depleting efficiently?

doubt it was switch to ketones that fast but its possible. I always feel better once I'm in the zone and one of the side effects often described is a lift in initial energy responce.

Suspect it's got something to do with hydration though for it to move that quickly. A lot of egg whites in plan will be forcing more water through in the absence of carbs. Body will store 2 glucose molecules to one water wihtin muscle (very basic'd explanation) - but in the absence of carbs will replace a missing glucose molecule with water. So could be just a case of a well hydrated muscle - would also explain why your pump was so good but you thought you were a little flat. Sodium is a phosphate like creatine - similar mech.

It will pass either way - you should be feeling pretty hammered come friday :D

yes probably more efficient the longer in depleted - There is definately more energy in fat but it cant process on its own - body will look for carbs first to burn with the fat and protein second (try to convert to glucose) - not easy to do as it consumes more energy. - is why I'd add more protein in to a diet if client was feeling blown out close to the day - especially in an endurance event.

Nates intake looking pretty good - imo.

Great effort an congrats on the 3rd placing bro. May have only been 3 in the class but no one else had the inclination to get up there and you certainly put in the hard yards. Getting this one done gets you over the first hurdle psychologically - having been off the stage for so long.

Whats in store next mate - still plenty of time till Nats for more refinement - this is only the first of many steps.

NEXT!!

Starting a new trip now I re-popped my BBing cherry.

Shooting for the Nationals, major changes in physique sought and moreso final preparation for the stage. Have invested in a qualified man to guide this journey, I'll listen & do as I'm told and hopefully it'll pay dividends.

Here's the start point - not much over 3kg heavier than I was on stage a few weeks ago - going to stay leaner now during off season!!

Bloody hell. You really are a BBer again now, using a belt for 12kg dumbbells!

Looking awesome Nate, can't wait to see the package you bring to Nationals

LOLz I got a new belt @ Evo Systems the other day (as my old one is too big! ) and wear it the entire workout....no reason just have been!

I'm hoping to bring something worth seeing....we'll see! 8)

looking chopped Nate good shit

Thanks man.

Looking good man, gain a little and grow into comp! Be mean as hell.

Yeah need to!

Nice getting some strength back again while still not being as heavy as I was (95 vs 105-115). The day after the comp (albeit hungover & dehydrated) I couldn't DB incline the 50's for more than 5 reps!! Shoulder pressed the 41's last night for sets of 12.......after 21 working sets of various raises!! :pfft:

Volume is my focus atm, I've hit between 18 & 27 working sets for first body part worked over last 2 weeks. Enjoying it!

Well here we go again....

Starting the 16 week diet to the Nationals on Sunday, under the new Coach. He's done a major overhaul of my diet, and will be changing my training & more particularly my cardio.

I'm looking forward to this and should be able to get in decent shape this time around. Had body comps done yesterday & am slightly leaner than when I had them done 3 weeks out from Chch show. One hell of a lot better starting point than where I started 14 weeks out from Chch (estimate half the bf% I was!! ).

Unsure how much I'll post, wait and see what the boss says I can do. Afterall I'm paying decent coin for advice for the first time! :pfft:
