upper body mass

so i have a friend whos been going to the gym for a while now and put on a decent 10-15kgs but all of this has been on his upper body.... yes hes one of those fools that dosnt train legs! but being a stubborn **** he refuses to do lower body and is proud of his chicken legs i told him hes starting to look stupid and unbalanced to which he got very defensive...

anyway my quistion is:

hes reached a plateau and my advice was to give squats and deadlifts a go as this would increase his upper body also, to which he replied he dosnt want to as his legs would rob protein from his upper body and make him smaller :? ...idiot.... am i right or am i right !!??

Your friend sounds like a complete munter.

Deads & squats will definitely help add upper body mass - these are 2 of the most taxing resistance exercises and work many & large muscle groups.

The larger the muscle group worked, the more growth hormone is released when you are resting - the growth hormone benefits the whole body.

"Rob protein from the upper body.".... I've not heard such cack in a long time :pfft:

haha what a flawed theory, i see his logic i guess.from the many articals i have read one huge benefit of working the legs with a compound movement (ie.squats) is the rises in testosterone an GH it creates in the body.As we all know higher levels will cause better muscle growth throughout the body, not just in the leg department.

tell him if he works his legs then his upperbody will get better as a result. win-win and no more track pants to the gym/beach :)

haha yea thats what iv been telling him, his other reasoning was "you never see guys with big legs running on the machines coz they cant run and i need to run to lose some bf % " ..... i said you do know there are other forms of cardio right.... and not like guys with big legs are physically unable to run

haha i guess your another guy that wears trackies to the gym and does not like training legs? lol

Leg training is for noobs. All the chicks I play hate big legs. I'd rather put my energy into getting bigger arms.

each to their own i guess, i train legs cause i like the look and to keep in balance, who cares what girls think as long as its what you want.

I hear you can get arms twice the size of your legs by doing upside down squats.

People who are scared of training legs are scared of squats and deadlifts,i know coz i was one of them, needless to say i love doing the deadlift now,its awesome,i hardly see people in the gym do it and only the big guys do it,there is a very reason for that, hey mike zero, are you one of those guys who does all his exercises on the swiss ball.

Yep, sounds like the guy's a little confused  I train legs hard for two reasons - one, they're the biggest muscle group and working them hard will expend the most energy, and strip the most fat frm all over the body; and two - cos I want to be in proportion...

If he doesn't want to run, there's ellipticals, rowers, bikes to give him cardio...oh, hang on, they all work LEGS...LOL

MZ,

Haven't you got the 2006-07 Nelson Bays record for standing on a swiss ball doing Hammers Curls or was it Barbell Curls, it was a while ago I think?

Was it in your log?

Word from a chick - chicken legs are gross, especially if upper body is significantly bigger.

As a figure competitor I still work my legs......lots! Squats, stiff leg deadlifts, lunges and curls. Not forgetting calves. No point having a defined top half if the bottom half still wobbles. :naughty:

Does your friend think that a few leg press exercises will cause hulk like thighs?? Get him to test the theory!

I lack in the leg department a bit. I hit them pretty hard with deadlifts tho.

With my current training shedule there arn't enough days in the week to fit them in (I am fighting in the next 8-10 weeks so boxing and upper body strength is more important)

I don't agree with the amount of GH people say that training legs releases. the upper body will only grow so much before the legs need to be trained, but how much is hard to tell. I put on a good 20kg of mass before I even touched them.

Check out Arnolds stats, not exactly massive legs - but an amazing physique none the less. I'm not scared from training them, but I'm also not interested in how many plates I can put on each side and go into a 'take a giant shit position' - not at the moment anyway

I hear Mike sometimes balances two swiss balls on top of each other when doing his exercises. I think he's got some videos of him doing it in his training journal.

yea your arms are pretty huge mike zero but i think you need to do some more deadlifts and work the legs :pfft:

and those upside down squats always seem to end in injury for me

yea gonna try get my mate to try squatting once a week his legs are like noodles..... i too never used to train legs but now i do and love watching them grow the only problem is growing too fast and getting stretch marks :(

I used to play basketball before, when i first started workiing out like any hardgainer i concentrated on the upper body, this ruined my game,i used to get shin splints like crazy because of the imbalance, even trekking became a problem for me,my legs used to get tired very fast,i became slow while playing ,my point is my biggest regret is i never trained lower body when i first started, MZ take my advice dude start working out your legs or youll regret it later guaranteed!

Do you train for yourself or to 'play' chicks? No point having massive arms if your legs look like shit

If they look that out of proportion they should start growing the legs. it has all been said above in regards to trackies etc. Personally I think that when guys just come in to do "pretty boy" exercises and forget legs, are after a root, and not really in it for the sport. TRAIN LEGS
