Well done on comp anyway, can't expect to nail it on first time equipped. At least you now know what it's all about.

Agreed. Raw and equipped lifts seem to be totally different sports, almost. If this was your first equipped comp, I think you've got to just consider it a learning experience.

It'd be interesting to hear from our powerlifting veterans on this one.

Ermmm, don't think there are any experienced powerlifters on this board except for Phedder now.

And I if I was Azide, I would've gone 175, 182.5 then 187.5 or 190. Before the comp he had already done 180 for 2 reps in the gym so he would be able to do 175 for 3, which is a good weight to open on (something you can triple). Then equap PB or slightly over for second attempt and go for gold on the last lift. Since it was his first comp, it was probably good that he was conservative. There's nothing wrong at all with playing it safe, but at the same time you don't want to leave numbers out there by making big jumps. There's a lot of variables at play, if your warmups feel shit you can alwayd drop the opener a little bit before lifting commebcrs.

Doing a one rep at maximal weight doesn't really fatigue you that much, especially in a powerlifting comp where you're waiting at least 10 minutes between attempts.

I am sorry you bombed in your competition. Its just advice Leeroid, take it easy.

You know what they say "beware of all advice you dont pay for. Because it may end up costing you alot more."

That quote is normally used with regard to investment advice, but I quite like it.

I have never worn a bench shirt.

I have done one powerlifting comp years ago.

I think I did like 180 squat, 215 Dead, 135 bench in the under 100kg novice class (I came second) lol. The comp was a bit of fun apart from my weighlifting shoes getting stolen...

I havent really trained seriously since then for any reasonable length of time. But I would like to get back into it again at some stage.

Any way, the point of last post is its just advice you dont have to take it...

I thought you wouldn't have any experience with a bench shirt.

My mate was going to buy a house and his uncle was giving him real estate advice. His uncle has never owned property and lives in a rental. Do you think ny mate is going to listen to his uncle?

No offence bro. Just trying to illustrate why I'm not taking your advice in this instance.

You don't have to own a house to have an understanding of the property market. Meaning just because somebody doesn't put their knowledge into practice, doesn't mean they don't have knowledge.

Anyway think we all get the point. All the best for next comp.

I think your mate would be wise to take his uncles advice, because he is family he is unlikely to be bias/ have an alternative motive.

Your mates uncle has worked as a realesate agent for 30 years specialising as a buyers agent. Last year he was the most successful in his agency, putting over 9000 people into new homes. He chooses not to invest into realestate personally as he beleives it could be a conflict of interest.

He chooses to invest his money in small business and the share market with a focus on research and development. He belevies that this investment not only makes him money but makes the world a better place.

On the other hand... You dont know me and this is the internet.... any I advice I give is free and should not be followed blindly. I wont be giving you any more advice as you requested, I am sorry if I have upset you.

dammit you bet me to the post :( I was too busy telling Leeroid about his mates, uncles, life story.

Your mates uncle has lots of experience on bench pressing with and with out a shirt. Maybe if you had of gone to him for advice before the comp you wouldnt have bombed :P

Of course there are people that have knowledge but not practice. But ohjoshua has neither in this instance as demonstrated by how he can't understand why I couldn't open with less than 170kgs. My mistake was not opening too heavy. My mistake was using a shirt that was too hard for my current strength level and not givingmyself more time to learn the shirt.

I ask for advice from advanced powerlifters that have been using equipment for years and years. Not some wannabe that has done one comp and never used equipment/doesnt even know how it works.

Anyway, that's enough. No more of this shit

How did you structure your warm up e,g what did you work up to raw and then when you did put the shirt on did you press to 2bd, 1bd etc?? Assuming you did do some reps to boards in the warm up room - if it felt easier to get down than before your cut perhaps you could have touched (and locked out) 160-165.

Snap.

160 opener would have been better by the look of things.

Dont worry Leeroid, I have been wrong before too. (this one time I thought I was wrong, but it turned out I was right.)

Obviously I took your weight loss into consideration when making my competition recommendations. I knew the shirt would be looser so you would be able to touch with 160.

:P

I went up to 120kg 3 reps raw. Then I put the shirt on. Did 160kg to a 2 board height 2 reps then last warmup was 170kg to 1 board 1 rep, still had to pull down hard to touch on the 1 board. It wasn't until my first attempt that I realised the shirt was a bit looser as it wasn't as much of a struggle to touch the 170kgs as usual. Does this mean that it was easy to touch? f*ck no, I still had to pull down hard and barely touched. I am unsure whether I could have touched 165 but if I was to do it again, I would've opened on 165kgs.

It would make more sense to be constructive ohjoshua... Just treat it as a learning curve Tom and smash it at your next comp.

Fair enough.

You can enter as many times as you like as a novice.

Thanks, won't be using equipment again until next year though. All raw for the rest of this year
