Hi! Chick Newbie from dunedin

Hi!

I am a full blown newbie looking to put on some muscle as I am way too small. I have increased my nutrition and started lifting. Previously was waaaay to into cardio and bikram yoga resulting in my current size and bf. Any tips or advice on how to bulk up would be greatly appreciated :). My arms, back and chest are in the most need of bulking, my lower body isn't too bad, I have a good amount of muscle on my legs from running up stairs.

Stats:Currently about 105lbs (47.5kg) at 170cm and about 11% bf and looking to increase my weight with some muscle!

good luck on your bulking journey lass. these guys will keep you sweet on diet / program. still learning off them myself.. .

one thing i'd recommend is some fasting blood tests to see what (if anything) you're deficient in nutrition-wise. i've been on a high-protein diet for a few months now and only just found out i have protein absorption issues - doh - wish i'd known that earlier ffs.. .

Thanks for the welcome! Question: will my body fat % naturally go up as I bulk? I am very vascular at this bf% and kinda hoping that that will lessen.

Body% doesn't need to increase while "bulking" but it can effect the quantity of gains. If you aren't down with the vascular look then just up your cals from carbs and/or fats and your BF% will rise. Be patient though, 2kg on you would look like 5 on me, don't wanna get sloppy quickly

Yeah I definitely don't want to get sloppy, but when I say vascular I mean very vascular - nooooot attractive at all. I was just wondering whether putting on some muscle will bring up my body fat% as I will be eating more to provide for the muscle growth or if should just go eat all the pies as well, ha.

Hi, vascularity is due to a number of things, skin thickness, vein thickness and a host of other genetic traits.

Tanning will thicken the skin, and will cover up small collections of spider veins.

Other than that I guess you'll have to learn to love your veins :D

If I was in your position, I'd sort out a diet maybe 100cals above maintenance so that you'll already be taking in excess cals but no too many. Then I'd try have a cheat meal 3-4 times a week until your BF is where you're happy

Are you vascular though out the day or just while you are in the gym??

Keen to hear about this skin thickening thing, if that were the case the pro's would be in long sleeves and pants 24 7 so their skin could stay thin??...

Best advice you can get set goals! sort term and long term! find out how to reach them and stick top it. Nutrition sounds like alot of effort but if you get the hang of it, it becomes easy and the results will all become very reachable!

At a higher bf% I am vascular just while/after working out and then when I get hot too, but right now its got to the point where i'm veiny all the time. Yeah sounds like eating is the key to gaining which makes sense.

I hear you on the goals, I don't really have any at the moment other than to gain weight and get stronger but I should probably make that more specific.

How does tanning thicken skin?

Hi, couldn't be bothered trying to simplify this so just pasted it from my uni notes, It's pretty straight forward:

Your skin also becomes thicker within days of excessive sun exposure, and this is so-called hyperplasia may last for weeks to months. This reaction appears to be a response to DNA injury — injury to the basal layer keratinocytes by UV radiation. Thus, within a day or two, once DNA repair has taken place, these keratinocytes begin to divide and multiply much more rapidly than normal, resulting in a several-fold thickening of the epidermis, particularly of the protective stratum corneum, while the dermis also thickens a little. These extra layers can then provide 5-10 times extra protection against the future effects of the sun, especially for the vulnerable basal epidermal layer. This thickening is usually more effective than any accompanying tan, especially in fair-skinned people.

And with all the new wonderful drugs on the market today, the pros dont need to worry about skin thickening, they just take vascular expansion aids when need be i.e. comp ect. Lots of nice new drugs for this in the past five years.

Looks like i will be putting away the shorts and singlet a month or so out from my shows then, no tan beds just go for the spay as a base!

$50 on Gym Rat, dont know mate he yalks a big game could scare her off...

With your goals dont just say i want to muscle up etc or their is no real insentive. Needs to be specific, like for example 6kg in 12months so each month you know you have to be hitting atleast 500gm and depending what you are like as a person at staying on track you may even want a shorter time frame like 2weeks hitting 250gm which is what i do because its more rewarding hitting goals more often and it keeps that motivation up.. Just my 2c anyway.

Goals are the most important thing because they are what make you walk through the gym door each day, but if the are spread to fare apart those times you arent sure if you feel like going to the gym you wont and then they start adding up and the goal doesnt get any closer.

I wouldn't get caught up in the "I weigh this much" game that alot of guys play. If you're getting stronger and eating enough, you'll be growing. Take measurements and use the mirror for a more honest approach
