Good day today, things didn't really go to plan with the squat with me missing my first two attempts due to being nervous and being my first comp in the squat suit. The first two attempts were fast, the weight felt really light the suit just pushed me forward coming up and after I got past my sticking point, all the weight was on my toes so I took a step forward. Really gutted as I feel a triple bodyweight squat was definitely there and that was my goal coming into this comp. But I'm still very happy with 205kgs and how easy it was.

Bench press was all right, nothing flash just a 2.5kg PB so finally a bit of improvement there.

Deadlift was all right too, I remember in December at the NIs I pulled 190 and that was really hard at the time but I opened on 190 today, piece of cake. 2nd attempt went for 205 to break through that 500kg total barrier and it was the hardest lift I have ever done! I got it past my knees and paused momentarily and took ages to lock out. I was afraid they'd redlight me for hitching but luckily they passed it. Costa had a similar deadlift and he got redlighted for it so I guess I was fortunate.

Great comp and can't wait for NIs in June to smash that 3x bodyweight squat and deadlift! I might get a Velocity deadlift suit in that time, depends how much spare money I have.

I should've thrown the bar down, reppin the NZ Aesthestics!

Well done Tom

Cheers Steak

are you deliberately keeping your body-weight low?

Na bro. I got 3kgs to gain to stay under 74kgs. I want to gain some muscle on my chest and tris

oh yep so how long you plan to stay under 74kg?

I don't know, at least until June for the North Islands but I want to get bigger. I hope to break some records before I move up though, although I think it'll be tough with John Strachan in the U74s.

Well done Tom, great results. I reckon you'll nail 3xBW well before the North Islands.

Yeah thanks, I think I'll give it a go before the NIs

good comp, you cracked 500 niice :D

squat looking pretty

Thanks. Happy to tick that 500 off.

Do you guys reckon I should get a Super Centurion for the NIs? I can get one for cheap and the Superior I got has really stretched out already. At the comp, I got it on in a few minutes on my own and I barely had marks on my legs afterwards. And hitting depth is quite easy now even with 180. I don't want to rush into it though so what do you guys think?

Sumo deadlift

60kg x8, 2 sets

80kgs x6

100kgs x6

120kgs x6

140kgs x3

160kgs FAIL

100kgs x6, 2 sets

Pull ups

BW x8, 2 sets

Decided I want to try out sumo deadlifting and I will pull sumo at NIs. I just dont feel good doing conventional and with heavy squats and work, conv deadlifts are frying my lower back. Considering it was my first time doing sumo, it wasnt too bad, 160 was stuck to the floor and I really need to focus on keeping the hips down cos as the weight gets heavier the quicker my hips shoot up making my lower back do more work to finish the lift.

Same problem as me, bro. Hips are moving before the bar is. So, sit back into it while you lift to keep your ass down so you don't lose the leg drive. If your hips move up, you basically just have to muscle it up because you don't have the leg drive. Sumo's are a big hammy movement, so keeping your ass down is important on them.

its true his hips are shooting, but there is more than one way to sumo. some successfully sumo from a high hip position. Others (including Coan) have successfully used modified sumo (close stance). It will take months to refine tech, and years to perfect it. Hopefully OldBull will chime in.

Tom, spend a good few moths doing tech. work and experimenting with differernt:

*feet width

*foot angle

*starting position

video from the side, not front if you want an honest look at your form.

also smash pos.chain and hip strength!

I was really sore from yesterday but i went to the gymnasium today and did 3 hours of gymnastics today . I did some gymnastics when i was younger and i just saw a clip of the mens gymnastics last night and thought i wanted to give it a go again. Mostly for core strength, conditioning and conquer my own bodyweight.

So i joined in the boys class and i got murdered tonight. First we warmed up in a circuit where we would do frisbee walks with our feet ina frisbee and walk with your hands. That was the most core and shoulder intense exercise ever. There were 5 boys 14, 14, 14, 10 and 8 years old and they were friggin good. I was embarassed but they said i did real good for my first time.

Then we were doing circles with our feet in a bucket suspended by a rope above us which i just couldnt do.

Then some high bar where i was not too bad, after a few tries i did a clean hip circle. My palms got ripped up though.

Then moved on to p bars, or parallel bars where we did swings and L sits. One of the dudes did a fuckin backflip dismount and it was crazy.

Then some muscleups on the rings which i couldnt do but the 8 year old was the only one that could do them properly.

Then we went back to the p bars where they got me to do a shoulder presswhich is where u put your arms in a dip position tilt ur body forward and bring ur legs up into a handstand position. I ended up going over and i kept my feet together instead of splaying them apart so i went straight between and i practically did a flip on to the floor, dropped a metre to the floor and my heels slammed into the wooden ground with a huge bang. It fuckin hurr like hell and i got an ice pack and i rested my heels on them for a few minutes then joined in their conditioning, barely able to walk.

Conditioning consisted of rocking, side rocks, handstands, pullups and reverse bridges. And hanging leg raises. Then stretching which was torture, we did all the splits imaginable and the coach was pushing us down.

Tonight was free and they have classes on monday and wednesday nights so im going to give it a go. I just have to pay 237 bucks for a term membership which goes by the school terms. Eeek. More money. Probably do powerlifting on tuesdays, fridays and sats.
