Enson Inoue's the one that gave me the advice dude. One of Japans most respected fighters, for the simple fact that he has never tapped for anyone.

Read here to learn more about him. He's a cool dude, he ran a highlight making competition and the winner got to travel to Japan to live and train with him for however long they wanted. I wish I won.

Also I train at ETK down Fairfax ave in Elleslie. Its a great gym mate check out http://www.etk.co.nz, apparently we have the most K1 fighters training in one gym in the world. Jason Suttie and Roger Earp are the head KB trainers there.

Also just wanna clear up something, Yoshida is a Japanese hero and one of the best submission experts ever. But when he fought Mark Hunt, Hunt had only had a couple of JiuJitsu classes and was like a fish out of water when it came to submissions. Tank Abbot is a fat drunk that would be lucky to be even classed a B-Level fighter and Mirko Won against Yoshida not lost. He won by verbal submission via vicious leg kicks.

But your right that Yoshida does have a good gym and that there are alot of good gyms in Japan, AMC pankration with Matt Hume being another good one. However the non english speaking gyms such as Yoshidas would not be a great place to start with if I wanted to get my technique down.

Also I dont know where you heard that most top foreigner contenders trained in Japan most of the year. They may spend a few weeks prior to an event but they definetly dont train in Japan most of the Year.

Cro Cop trains in Croatia, he has his own facility.

Fedor trains in Russia in the Red Devil Camp as well as Holland with Ernesto Hoost for his standup game.

Wanderlei trains in Curtiba, Brazil with the Chute Boxe Gym.

The Gracies are brazil aswell.

Mark Hunt trains in Oz.

Bob Sapp also trains in Oz with Sam Greco

I got no Idea who Bobby Oregon is though :)

You wont find that many people train in Japan for long periods of time. Its an obvious fact that the best BJJ practicioners train in Brazil because thats where the art was made. For standup Holland reigns supreme, the best kickboxers bar none so youd find more people going there if they wanted to up their standup game. However youd find that Judo reigns supreme in Japan and that alot of people would go there temporarily not permanently to change things up a bit or increse their allround game.

But on a side note, I saw a post on T-Nation that looked like you. Did you go to Mags. Just asking cause the post said you went to school with Thomas Leulaui and he is my cousin haha. Small world aye :)

Hows it bro,

Yeah I went to MAGS and grew up bumming around 6th/7th form with Thomas and the other league boys.

RE: Mark Hunt, I cant figure that one out, he seems to be all out in one fight, for instance I think in the Pride New Year special where he beat Mirko Cro Crop (Albeit 95% of the fight was standup) and yet at other times he gives in relatively easy to other fighters.

Tank abott Ive seen some decent fights for a fat gas guzzler on ufc, so i wouldnt entirely disregard him, but as you say, he stands no measure against elites like Mirko, Emelianko, Wanderlei, Yoshida etc. .

I dont get to watch all the pride fights (I dont have Sky) and read on some webpage that Yoshida beat Mirko by submission.. obviously it was false ? .. I dont know, havent seen the fight myself anyway.

Most of my interpretation of mma scene in Japan is through Japanese friends who are forced by me to endure the task of translating web pages into English from JP, so my facts maybe a bit skewed :P

However, i still am under the impression JP is an awesome place to train for more experience apart from just NZ. Yes, obviously if you wanted to perfect your bjj youd go to Brazil, standup fighting Im not so clued up on Clinch/wrestling/Judo I guess JP would be a good place to train in as well.

Pure, let me know when you are around at your gym, might drop by and say hello.

btw do you guys have any info about Sambo, I heard some guys from the uni judo club are training somewhere around in it... I have no clue.. wondering if you have any leads on sambo training in nz.

I fight MMA on the north shore. If you're ever that way come to integrated fighting. http://www.integratedfighting.org As for training goes, that link that Varven gave is great. I'm off to Hawaii on the 3rd of August for a trip, i'm gunna visit Relson Gracie's jujitsu academy http://www.relsongracie.com and have a few sessions there. Should be awesome! then come back and gunna have a crack at the SJJ comp on the 26th August =) Anyway back to the original question. I know a guy on the North Shore (Silva) who trains kickboxers etc, he's located at Takapuna Les Mills gym, maybe give them a call just to ask a few questions, he's awesome and trying to help. All the best 8)

Hey mate,

have you taken part in much of SJJ before ?

Give us more details of the sjj comp, should be good fun to come along to spectate.

Im going to Oz this Friday, and wont be back for a month. But once I come back ill be going hard 5 days a week to get rid of all the holiday fat I probably accumulated. You should check the place out anyway, they have General classess 6 - 7.30pm Tuesday to Thursday. Boxing and then Kickboxing Endurance 6 - 8pm Friday and Beginner Sparring 1:00 Saturday. They also have fighters classes 7.30pm Mon - Fri.

Also I have about 50GBs worth of MMA on my hard drive if you want me to chuck some onto a DVD for you once I get back.

Cheers

Does anyone know of any decent powerlifting gyms or olympic lifting gyms where you can get a decent coach or trainer to help you out.

Im looking to improve my strength for kickboxing, and have been lifting for a few years now but I think id do better with an experienced coach that knows what he's talking about as apposed to a 80kg personal trainer that doesnt know what a deadlift is

Hows the training been thus far.. what have you been upto bro ?
