i really want to learn some form of martial arts for self defense but don't want to compromise my current pwrbuilding training.

Be keen to hear from people if they do both how it affects thier physique/training?

Depends how hard you want to go with it, I have done a lot of "fight" training over the years and I find pad work and that kind of thing is ok, even wrestling training and LIGHT sparring is ok. But if I really want to work on new techniques and spar a little bit harder its hard to weight train with my regular volume. Most mma guys do strength work but more explosive type stuff, cleans, push pressed, speed deads, that kind of thing.

Now I am back in comp mode I might do some light pad work and the bag every now and then but nothing too strenuous. I do think any kind of fight training is good for mobility and flexibility.

+1 Good question, me too. I heard it's pretty intense cardio?

It all depends on how serious you want to take the martial art(s).

Proper commitment to MMA training can include anywhere from 5-10+ hours of training a week so you'll have to schedule that around your weights etc. Don't do MMA training and weights on the same day if you have joint issues coz this will screw them up even more.

It won't affect your strength/mass that much as long as you keep things balanced and eat enough. It'll help lean you out even and get your fitness/work capacity up in the gym.

I know for kick boxing with training is quite taxing, be prepared to be a pussy in one or the other. MMA BJJ less so, but the stand up combat sports are very intense. 3min full intensity pad rounds etc

I found that without any muscle tech assistance, weights + boxing at a good intensity = very little in gains, and the low carb diets start effecting performance. But in saying that with the MTech I'm sure its gonna be all good, in fact you'll prob dominate in it soon enough.

Advice for the martial arts training would be to just take it at a mediocre pace, heaps of room for injury. But good for flexibility, agility, and getting use out of the body you've spent so much time developing! Very fun stuff.

I think strikeforce are open again, could be worth a look. Or theres proactive, and academy

Just to clarify...are you specifically looking for MMA-style training, or anything that's gonna give you the skills to walk away from a scrap? If it's the latter, I'd seriously recomend seeing if there's a Todd CQB facility near you (no idea what town you're in sorry). Tank is THE MAN when it comes to no-bullshit ass-kickery. It won't compromise your powerbuilding-training (unless you get injured  ) as it doesn't involve a lot of rolling around, jumping, dancing, or anything else you're likely to find in a "normal" martial arts setting.

MMA/Thai/Boxing are all pretty intense cardio sessions. If you try one of those, you'd probably want to avoid weights on the day. I guess it'll totally be up to what you'd like to try. Each have their own pros.

IMO:

Boxing - Depending on gym, you actually learn to strike properly with hands with power.

Thai - Learn to kick as well as strikes with fists, elbows, knees (I found this harder cardio)

MMA - Combination of the above plus wrestling/BJJ. Very extreme cardio. Explosive training. Tax the eff outta me. New respect for MMA after trying it.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu I think you might enjoy and would work well with your current training. I love no Gi training, but there's just something special about the Gi training. I guess I just feel special with mine on. Too many movies as a kid maybe? Training isn't too intense. Depending of gym, you learn a lot of techniques that translate very well. Usually a lot less ego heads with BJJ.

Haven't done anything else so can't really comment on other martial arts.

I agree with Tom in that you need to train more than more than once in your chosen martial art, I did Judo for 3 days a week and felt like I was light years behind the rest of the guys (never mind that they did train for a few more years than me) I'd suggest that if you do train something make sure there is some ground work, most of the fights end up there and while striking is good, you're always better off choking someone or breaking a limb.

when it comes to self defence just do what ever it takes kick them in the balls, ,throw them through the window, headbutts and uppercuts, bodyslams, bottles lol no training just staight ruthless when it is required and save your energy for your pwrbuilding :pfft:

The best form of defense is a good offense.....

A knock-out punch with both hands goes a long way if you get in a street scrap.....

Get yourself a good boxing coach, to teach you how to power-punch...

The bag work will be good cardio, & you don't need to spend that much time-out from your pwrbuilding training.....

I found I couldn't do both when training for fights, its either-or...

Because of the weight limits, I'd end up too heavy.....

Used to bulk up in the off season, Then cut down to 11-7lbs for fights in the winter season..................

Learn yourself how to throw a few decent combinations of punches with both hands, with the odd headbutt, & forearm whack thrown in & you won't go far wrong, if shit kicks off...........

I have found that when you reach around 120kg of leanmass, that no one wants to **** with you anyway. So the fact that I can't fight/wipe my own ass is of little relevance at the end of the day.

Long as you can wipe your mouth cos a whole lotta shit seems to dribble out of yours.

TWL I would look into seeing if you have a local Brazilian jujitsu exponent in your area the techniques are amazing for both immobilizing someone of any weight and also an insane cardio workout!! you would have wrestled ya mates on the piss for a few minutes try that with these experienced guys its amazing and very humbling to be put in your place by someone haha!!

Daz I think a good punch is going to be useless against a top BJJ exponent if you miss and get taken to the ground then what??

Tom I took one of those tazors from the fatherinlaw haha in the chest and yup it farken hurts not as bad as the fear from the crack it makes though :-)
