Used to be 60 mins, dropped the rest breaks down to 15 sec between sets, upped the intensity and I'm done in 45 mins max. I love my workouts but hate spending longer than I need to in the gym. Get in,go hard, go home, eat.

How many sets in total are you guys doing that are spending more than 45mins?

35-45

Is that a serious answer Tom? If so, is that for one muscle group?

It isn't unheard of but I just think it gets a little unnecessary to go to such high volume. Call me ignorant but unless you are running a lot of gear, wouldn't it be amazingly difficult to recover properly from such a high volume workout?

On average for me its 15 sets.....eg for chest. That doesnt include my 1 set of warmup. no cardio. Leg training is different, I split it with Quads(22sets) and calfs one day then Hams another day..

Not sure if there is any relevance but typically how many exercises would you do?

I think it depends on the individual, I usually spend upto 2hours in the gym but have a very slow warm up eg. on a legs day I will do 5 warm up sets pyramiding up from 10, 5, 3, 2 to 1 rep(s). Then chuck on 5 kgs and bang out 2 heavy sets and sometimes a 3rd 20 rep set at a lower weight. It usually takes me 20min to half an hour to get this first exercise done due to such a slow warm up.

After Ill do; leg press (4 sets), hack squats (3) and extensions (4) after then onto hammys with SLDLs (3) and curls (3-4)

I take 2min rests between sets. I Just cant push as heavy with anything less than a 2min break.

I know guys who can go in and out on a legs day within 45min. I could never do that, just find out what works best for you.

35 sets today for legs, not including a couple of light warmup sets.

Thats quads, calfs and hams?

Today it was, although it was quad-dominant. I've been doing quads alone on wednesdays, but with the gym closed on Friday (so I can spaend the day eating chocolate :pfft: ) I dropped out some of the quad sets to squeeze in the others,

just curious how long are your guys gym sessions ? mine usually take up to 90-120 mins depends,

i usually work 2 muscle groups, which take roughly 90mins, when i add my abs its an extra ~20mins so sometimes just under 2hours ,

is this normal ? or am i over-training

Usually if you have to ask this question you already know the answer.

It will depend on your goals of course. If you want to be fit, lean and have an athletic muscular physique, you are right in the zone now mate :)

If you want to be fit and healthy but have a larger muscular physique. You need to decrease the training time to 1hr max and increase the intensity right off the scale with minimal rest periods.

Basically during intense training your body releases hormones such as cortisol into your body which break down and clear away damaged muscle tissue. the longer you train the more of this is released into your body and after 45mins on intense training you end up having too much of this running around trying to deal with the damage you are doing and it can have a negative impact on how much quality gains you can achieve from your workouts.

I was always told the same thing Sifo, that for someone trying to gain muscle mass, you shouldn't be in the gym for more than 45mins because you'll burn to many calories and waste muscle. However it is well known that Arny/Louey/Ronnie etc spend/used to spend 8 hours + in the gym daily.. How did they manage that and still be the best in the world?? Long chat breaks with mates?

Your bodies available test is expired pretty much between 45-60 minutes > (age and lifestyle, genetic dependant) - at about this time your cortisol levels begin to build which causes test levels to decline. This would deem any resistance training after 60 minutess to be counter productive for building muscle (if that was your main goal).

Strength and endurance athletes regularly go beyond this time frame but then the goal is not exclusively muscle growth. Interestingly test levels can be suppressed for over a week by going beyond in only one session.

Longer and more intense sessions are ideal when on cycle as you will have more available test than normal > rules change accordingly. Exercise also lowers blood estrogen levels in women so it can be said the same for men > hense the need for longer sessions IMO.

sometimes if the shirt or suits are invloved and in the heat of the sheiko cycle Ive been known to go 2.5 hours and even a bit longer...but I do eat during the session(bananas and a shake - sometimes lollies or a coke) and have a pro/carb drink on the go 8)

I would try and keep sessions short and intense and its true test decreases over the 60min mark and cortisol increases however acute fluctuations in hormones like this have little effect on body composition sure if you are wanting to get the MOST out of your training you should keep sessions short around 60min but I really wouldn't stress if your sessions go a bit longer.
