Lower back pain

Draft

Recommended Posts

Got a bit of pain in the lower back. Been hanging around for 2 weeks or so despite not training so think I should probably see someone.

Its at the lumbar and notice it pretty much only when my legs are at a 90 degree angle to my torso.

Is this something I should see a chiropractor or physio about? I have no concept of what would be more useful. Also, can anyone recommend a decent one in central Wellington?

I'm not an expert but do have a history of 'troubles' stemming from an injury some years ago.

From what you've said, initially I would say it sounds like soft tissue - muscular. Most likely tight muscles in vicinity, very likely your Hamstrings. This is caused by the shortening of the muscle i.e. post exercise and results from the added strain placed on your joints (in this case the hips) by that shortened muscle.

STRETCH. I'm assuming that because you're on here you're physically active (so no 'consult your doctor' caveat required) so look up (read Google) some stretching exercises, particularly Hamstring ones and start stretching daily. Personally my fav is sitting on the floor - one leg our straight, one leg bent and relaxed - stretch up toward the sky as high as you can, breath out and bend toward the toes of the straight leg - hold for min 10sec, 30 sec better!

A Chiro will manipulate something - it may or may not help.

A Physio will 'most likely' stretch you and give you some stretches to preform on your own.

As I said, I'm not a professional but have an ongoing back 'issue' that I manage with weights training and stretching - don't underestimate the power and importance of the later ;)

Hope this help you dude.

Hercfeend covered it pretty well.

I came to this topic with the intention on telling you to stretch your hamstrings. As a lot of lower back pain can be caused by that. And when you said it hurts when your at a 90degree angle sounds even more so that its the short hamstrings causing the pain.

So I would try some stretching before you see a professional to do the stretching for you. Goodluck.

Lower back pain, first off (if not the case already), stabilise your core. This will support your lower back. Second, stretch and not just static stretches, you will put too much pressure on the tendon muscle connection. Static active stretch. Start at your feet, stretch through your achilles, stretch out your calves, quads, hammys. Stretch out your hip flexors as more often than not, it will pull your pelvis out of alignment causing additional pressure on your lumbar spine.

Also, take a couple of brufen and use anti-flamme and a heat pack. If this doesn't help, get intouch with an osteopath. The do muscle as well as spinal manipulation.

Hope it helps.

Osteopath. Get it checked out, it is always the assumption that that sort of stuff coule be sciatica when sometimes the problem may just be a sympathetic pain from something else. If you're in Wellys I can suggest someone.

thanks, unfortunately im in auckland. Anyone know a good Osteopath in auckland? Tygrrh, are they expensive?
