Weighed in at 104.1. Decided to come in for a wee bit of work, wasn't feeling too bad so thought why not.

  • Squats (sets x reps @ weight - RPE)
    bar
    1 x 5 @ 60kg
    1 x 3 @ 100kg
    1 x 3 @ 140kg
    1 x 3 @ 180kg (b) - 8
    1 x 1 @ 200kg (b) - 9
    1 x 3 @ 180kg (b) - 8
    1 x 10 @ 140kg - 8
  • Bench
    bar
    1 x 5 @ 60kg
    1 x 3 @ 100kg
    1 x 2 @ 120kg - 7
    1 x 1 @ 140kg - 9
    1 x 10 @ 100kg - 8

  • Not a lot to say really, just came in and wanted to work to an 8-9 RPE on squat and bench. Think I might do this for the remaining sessions (at least for squat). Just belt + sleeves and blast out until it gets a bit hard.
Wasn't expecting a lot from squats, but did kinda hope for 210-220. 200 felt just that bit too hard to push it much further without "maxing", so I backed off there. Widened the stance a little bit, as I've noticed it's a helluva lot narrower than most people, just playing with it seeing if I get anything more out of a slightly wider stance. Actually felt pretty good, made my movement a little less wayward.
Bench was the same, 120 actually felt really good, so thought I'd jump to 140 and see how that felt... hard 9.

Intended to do more but don't want to push things this soon after comp, will do extra stuff on Thursday.

104 flat (with trackpants, hoodie, shoes etc on). Trained at exodus today because they had an open day, and whaddaya know, they had a "powerlifting comp" on! So we decided to have a crack. We got 3 attempts at each, but it was a 5rm comp though, belt only was allowed but that was it. Rules were pretty loose (well, compared to a powerlifting comp) but it actually was a good atmosphere and really nice bunch of people running it.

  • Squats (sets x reps @ weight - RPE)
    Warmups
    1 x 5 @ 60kg
    1 x 3 @ 100kg
    1 x 2 @ 140kg
    Attempts
    1 x 5 @ 180kg - 6
    1 x 5 @ 200kg - 7
    1 x 5 @ 220kg - 8
  • Bench
    1 x 5 @ 60kg
    1 x 2 @ 100kg
    Attempts
    1 x 4 @ 130kg - 10 (failed 5th :shifty:)
    1 x 5 @ 120kg - 10
  • Deadlift
    Warmups
    1 x 5 @ 60kg
    1 x 2 @ 100kg
    1 x 1 @ 140kg
    1 x 1 @ 180kg
    Attempts
    1 x 5 @ 200kg - 9 (then it was beaten by 2.5 so I had to go again )
    1 x 5 @ 210kg - 9.5
    Didn't do a 3rd

  • Let me start by saying there is no way I could get a full set of 5 @ 220kg with no belt or wraps. The rules for this wee shindig said we had to touch the pins before heading back up. The first height we tried was probably slightly below parallel, so they let us move it up one, and that made it an inch or two above. All good! We got a bit more help than just simply squatting shallow though (well, I found I did), because I drop fairly quick, the pins absorb all of that downward force and give me a bit of pop out of the hole, so I was definitely getting some there.
The attempts themselves were easy, I'm a bit ashamed to call them squats but for a beltless movement, they weren't too bad to be honest. Got a good sweat going anyway. 220 was quite easy, think I could've gone a bit further, and with a belt could've kicked a fair bit around but all good.
  • Bench was weak today, not sure what happened, had the dreaded right arm not locking again so only managed four reps at what I intended to be 130. I did ask before attempting it if we could drop down if we don't hit our first attempt, and they were cool with that, so I started on what I thought would be borderline for me today.
130 gassed me a tad, so 120 was a wee bit tougher afterwards than it should've been, but managed to get 5 good reps there and passed on a 3rd attempt.
  • Deads were rough as guts, being in front of a mirror didn't help because it made me realise how freggin long my deadlift looks. Intended to just single 200, but it felt hard enough that I thought I'd do 5 just to get a safe-ish opener in. Nobody else was around there at that point, so I was happy to leave it there and say I'm done for the day, but Tom Platz decided to go for 202.5  So I had to have a 2nd attempt @ 210 to beat him, and that actually felt a wee bit easier than the 200.

I think I ended up with 1st in my division (over 100kg), and if so, I'll have a cool trophy soonish which is great! We also got some vouchers to split between us, so we raided a bunch of protein shakes and stuff. All in all a pretty nice outing, I was impressed by this shiny land gym. Not enough to draw me away from the House of course, but they earned some respect.

101 flat today  I kinda knew the weight would've shot either up or down, but wasn't prepared to see that much of a change. 104.7 on comp day 2 weeks ago (before no food/water got me down to 102.x later in the day), and despite the lack of training I've been eating pretty much the same which surprised me more!

This is what happens when I don't train, the body just kinda goes "oh, no training, I'll drop a few kilo then". Kinda scared to check when I get back after a couple of months :shifty:

  • Squats (sets x reps @ weight - RPE)
    bar
    1 x 10 @ 60kg
    1 x 5 @ 100kg
    1 x 5 @ 140kg
    5 x 3 @ 180kg (b) - 8ish
  • Push Press
few powercleans @ 50kg to warmup
    1 x 1 @ 50kg
    1 x 1 @ 90kg
    1 x 1 @ 110kg - 9
    1 x 1 @ 120kg - 9 [+5kg(?) PB]
    1 x 0 @ 125kg

  • Final session today before taking off overseas, and first real train since the skills session before the comp a few weeks back (had a deload week, then the comp, one very light training session, and the exodus "comp" in the past few weeks).
As it was the last session, was hoping to have a good hitout with MT before I shot off (as well as grab my Exodus trophy!)... but he decided not to show up today, which was a wee bit of a letdown :? Ah well life and lifting goes on.
So just ended up getting some moderate squats in - probably could've pushed the sets to 5 reps each, but would've been a bit of a battle having not done any real squat training for a while - and trying to max push press out. Mostly chatting though, bit of a catchup as haven't been in the House much lately.
  • I think my previous best push press was 115, but maybe even only 110? I know I've attempted 120 before, and failed, but not sure what the best was beneath that. At least 110 though.
Decided to walk it out off the boxes and use the oly plates, as I never feel safe dropping the weight back down from above when I've got the normal plates in a rack.
110 felt rough, was starting from the clean grip as it puts less pressure on the front delts when holding it before the press. But I didn't manage to wrap my pinkies around the bar in time, so had a bit of an awkward hold up the top.
Thought I'd give 120 a crack afterwards, wasn't too confident, but it actually ended up feeling a bit easier than the 110. Everything clicked well.
Gave 125 a crack, but everything was wrong from the grip, to the walkout, to the push, which resulted in the wrong line for the press. Lost it about halfway up, and dumped the bar. Glad I went for the Oly plates!
Good to get a PB before the holiday anyways.

So that'll be me for a couple of months while I travel the world a bit. I hope everyone continues to lift and train hard, and I hope to see some good numbers being posted when I check in 8) First stop; Tokyo! Sayonara! :salute:

All the best in your travels D, will be a life changing experience for sure. You planning on having a few training sessions when you can, or going to completely take the next few months off?

Good job on the push press, leaving on a high note :)

Thanks Phed. Ahhh, I'm not targeting any training while I'm away, hope to just give the body a rest. But you never know, I might search out some gyms if I get a bit over the touristy stuff at some point. Definitely targeting a stopover at Westside Barbell in New York, would love to get Louie Simmons to sign a CDPA Champs tee

But yeah, I get back pretty much exactly 2 weeks before the Unequipped CDs comp on the 9th of June, so I'll get maybe a week of training in and use that comp to test some maxes for a program to lead me into Nats (whatever that program may be).

Good luck with the training while I'm away, catch you in August down South

Cheers bro, I'm sure we'll cross paths at some point (hopefully not in the same weight class for my sake haha) :)

haha...you'll take me to the cleaners!

Guy on Sat in the U73kg class had a MASSIVE wilks, came 2nd overall.....big lifts as well. Definately pays to use bodyweight as a competitive tool

Have to admit, I haven't been following your journal as closely as I should've. I knew you were travelling, but I hadn't realised it was for so long! Not sure how we'll cope without you, TBH. :?

(And I'm damn sure you won't cope without NZBB... we proved that last time you went away!)

Anyway... have an awesome time, sir!

  • 2 weeks later...

Here's the gym I've got in my Dubai hotel, not exactly decked out but at least they have dumbbells! Did my first workout for a couple of weeks, just circuity type stuff.

image-1.jpg

Every day includes lots of walking, and I'm trying to keep the eats up so the body is well stacked. Stepped on the scales today and was 98 fully clothed, not sure how accurate that is though.

Anyway, hope everybodys workouts are going well, I miss working out but loving the travels so far.

100 flat today. Compared to mid-90s in Europe 3-4 weeks ago, I guess the NY diet of bagels, pizza and deep fried chicken put things back up a bit :pfft:

  • Squats (sets x reps @ weight - RPE)
    bar x lots and lots
    1 x 10 @ 60kg
    2 x 10 @ 100kg
    1 x 5 @ 120kg
    1 x 5 @ 140kg
    1 x 3 @ 160kg (b) - 8
    1 x 1 @ 180kg (b) - 9
    1 x 3 @ 160kg (b) - 8
    1 x 5 @ 140kg (b) - 7
    1 x 5 @ 100kg

  • First training session (disregarding the 30mins token circuity thing I did in Dubai) since the end of March, which means it has been 57 days since I had done anything meaningful, so I thought I'd jump in the squat rack and loosen things up a bit.
At first it felt horrible. I had a bad pinging in my tail bone every time I got to the bottom of the squat - I'm thinking it's just the tissue down there has tightened up a bit during my hiatus - but once the belt was on, and the heels were introduced (@ the second set of 100), it started to go away a bit.
Still, didn't want to push things hard at all in the first session, so took my time. Didn't really expect to get too far past 140, but 160 felt easy enough, so I thought I'd see how 180 felt. Answer: terrible, haha, but it came up ooook in the end. Quig said I sunk it a bit deep which probably contributed to it being tougher than it should have been, but once I was past a wee bit of a sticking point just out of the hole it went up well. If I really wanted to I think 190 would've been there, which isn't bad for the first session back after such a long time off.
  • I also threw in a wee bit of token bench, but 5 reps @ 100 felt horrible on the shoulders - although the weight itself felt fine - so I stopped there. Will need to work them back into it a bit slower I think.

Plan for now is to just squat 4-5 times a week until things are humming along closer to how they were before I left. Want to walk in and do an Auto-reg kinda training most days - kinda similar to what I did today, where I'll work up to a 9ish single and then back off to about 90% of that, then work my way back down.

I won't be wrapping the knees for a while, I want to get the classic numbers up a bit, and then hopefully the wrapped squat will get a boost too, as I felt it had begun to stall earlier this year. Once the classic numbers are up and respectable again (say, 250ish), I'll begin to throw the wraps back on in the quest for my 300.

I may or may not do the Unequipped CDs comp in a couple of weeks, simply to set some numbers for a training program to follow that and possibly lead me into the Nats. But then again, if this auto-reg stuff works out ok, I may just keep doing that.

All just hypothetical right now though, so I'm gonna take it session by session and see how quickly (or slowly) things are to get back on track, and assess it from there.

Good to catch up with a few of the boys back at the House! Nice to be back :)
