17.03.2012 - Central Districts Champs

102.5 at weigh in. Really annoyed at this! I weighed in at 103.3 (on the gym scales) Friday night, so I allowed myself a nice big dinner when I got home. Got into the gym quite early on the morning of the comp, as I had to help my Dad warmup + wrap etc, so weighed in about 7.30am... @ 104.7kg!

So I decided not to eat or drink just in case until weigh-ins, which were scheduled for 11. Unfortunately, weighins got delayed a bit, so I didn't end up getting weighed until 12.30. Obviously this is something I need to work on, weighing in right on the day. It can be a bit of a fine art (as I'm coming to realise) and as it was, I ended up quite drained. Funny, because I'm used to the intermittent fasting that I do daily, but on my own terms - and with water. Ah well, lesson learnt!

  • Squats didn't feel terrible when warming up, I actually thought things were going really well. 220/240 flew up in warmups, so at this point I was quietly confident of a 290-300 3rd attempt.
260kg went up alright, sunk nice and deep, equalled my previous comp best.
280kg was awful, dropped it slow, came out of the hole slow, got stuck mid-way up and had a "should I grind through, or shouldn't I?" moment, but before I could think about it, had squeaked through the sticking point and stood up. +20kg comp PB.
Was a wee bit miffed at the left knee call I was getting. First time I got called for it I didn't even think about it, so thought maybe I was (although I usually try and stand straight, I could've been out of whack this time around). Second time I made sure I was standing straight as an arrow before I started, and was really surprised to get called for it again as I spent a lot of energy/concentration making sure I had it right! Maybe I wrapped my leg so tightly into an unlocked state? Possible. Ah well, 2 whites is good enough.
Knew at this point I had absolutely nothing left in the tank, so I entered 290 as my 3rd attempt, and let it time out to give the guy after me (Damon) a bit more rest for his shot at 300 (unfortunately missed on depth and a thumb loop from his wrist wrap being on!).
  • Bench felt crap in warmups, moved slowly, had no explosive power today seemingly. 125kg was horrible, didn't bode well, actually considered changing my opener but thought I might as well give it a crack.
Hit the 140kg ok, but slower than it has been lately. Came off the platform and my fingers started cramping and clamping up to my hand! Had this at the last comp, I think it's partially due to wrapping my Dad in the mornings quite hard which fatigues the forearms, and my lack of food/water through the day. It gets so bad that I have to physically pry the fingers open with my other hand.
145kg was a grinder, again, just moved too slowly. Thought I locked out unevenly and was expecting to potentially get red lighted for it, but Judges thought it was ok so I'll take it. +5kg PB so I was happy with that. Again, coming off the platform, I tried to take the singlet off my shoulders and WHAM, the fingers locked down again. So I was stuck awkwardly holding the singlet and unable to move my hand. Then BAM, the other hand locked up too! Just my luck. Doc stepped in and gave the forearms/shoulders some massaging, but I had to keep the hands open or they'd clamp down again.
Because of this, didn't even attempt 147/150, just too much uncertainty about grip and stuff to bother risking it, and 145 was enough of a grinder I knew there likely wasn't going to be anything else I could add to it.
  • Deadlifts, like everything else today, were hard. Warmups were slow, tough, not good. Hands/fingers started to cramp again toward the end of the warmups.
To top it off, there was a miscommunication somewhere along the line with my opener, as I had written down 250 on my attempt card, but I think they may have mistook my 5 for a 6 and had me opening on 260. Not incredibly ideal to jump from a 220 warmup to a 260 opener, but as the bar was loaded the Judges said I had to do it, and I knew I was good for it, so cranked it up relatively easily.
It kinda scuttled my plans a bit though, because I was targeting 250 for my opener as a final warmup of sorts, which would've made 275 as a second a good and relatively safe option. As it was though, 260 drained a bit more from me than I would've liked. To top things off, the callus I ripped last weekend opened up again, and started bleeding out like a blimmin tap! OB patched it up (thanks OB!), but I wasn't confident enough to use a hook grip for the final attempt, as I had a feeling it could slip out.
So for the 275 second attempt, I went for an over/under grip - which I hadn't done for a good 8 months or so. Under for the right hand as I thought that would be better for the injury.
Slow off the floor, got it above the knees, knees locked out, back rounded, no chance, so pulled out and put the bar down. Once I let go of the bar, I realised my right shoulder had popped out (it used to do this semi-frequently when under/over gripping). Doc popped it back in after a bit of wiggling it around - life saver!
The way 272.5 popped up last weekend (i.e. pretty easily), I was certain that 280+ was there today, but a combination of a whole lot of things going wrong today scuttled those plans.

So on the plus side, I qualified for nationals, got 2 PBs and a PB total, as well as finishing first in my division. But I can list a whole lot of things that went wrong! This was probably my worst outing at a comp to date. On paper it isn't too bad, but in terms of preparation and effort on the day, I'm annoyed at myself.

Ah well, rather this happened now than at nationals, so I've learnt my lesson and will come out firing for my next comp (probably in June when I'm back from my holiday).

Now for a couple months rest and recuperation. Jamming a video together now - I also have about 60 videos of various other people lifting that I may get up tomorrow, stay tuned!

Drizzt you did AWESOMEl! You have qualified for Nationals haven't you? and that was the point of CDs! You did some awesome lifting and got all but one of your attempted lifts- that's a good day! 8)

Thanks ma'am, I'm capable of a lot better though which is why I'm disappointed. Ah well! And congratulations yourself :)

Pretty strong lifting raw for 105s D

Thanks bro.

strong like traktor bro!

you must be eyeing up some records for nationals?

Cheers bro! Ahhh I'm not sure there are any that I can get unequipped, this year at least. If I'm in equipment by the end of the year, I might start targeting some records next year (if they haven't slipped too far out of my reach :pfft:)

Thanks BJ, good quote bro!

Vid:

In the vid, my first Dead attempt has the sign saying 250 in the background - I think they changed it when I first complained that I hadn't asked for 260, so the spotter/loaders started preparing to drop it back to 250 when the head judge said nope, you've gotta do it.

So it was 260, don't be fooled by the sign :P

Good job getting first mun. That last deadlift flew off the floor then seemed to just stop completely which is a shame.

Great lifting and looking forward to seeing you smash the Nationals.

Cheers Mac, I'm looking forward to it as well 8)

Thanks VP, very true about the weight bro. Catch you later in the year.

Nice lifting bro under the circumstances, definitely could have been better but still better than your previous best in comp, well done.

Cheers Harry (and happy birthday for the other day young guy)

Thanks bro! Yeah definitely, for me though I did have plenty of food and drink, it was more being worried that I was so close to the weight cutoff I didn't want to risk eating/drinking. In hindsight I probably should've kept an eye on it through the day and drank some. Disadvantage of being in the afternoon sessions I guess!

It has to say something about your rate of progress when nothing quite went right on the day, and you still walk away with a PB total  Can't forget what you and MT have achieved for the kids as well, inspirational stuff

well-done bro .... better lessons learned in your qualifier that can only benefit your nats.

Not sure what you have planned b/w wise for nats but your better off banking the lower bw over night and then hitting a hi cal day the next morning ... Do as Tonka does ... McD's is compulsory load after weighin  ... worked a treat for my at the CBC push pull.

nice RAw total for your bw though ... 685 is good no matter what your weight imo

Haha, I guess so. Looking back it is actually quite funny to me how just none of the lifts click. Even if I have a bad day in training, one of the lifts will make me feel a bit better... but 0 from 3 was new territory for me :pfft: Ah well, definitely learnt a lot, and raised lots for the kids

Thanks Opti, yeah my thoughts exactly, good time to learn. That's actually a really good suggestion re: banking the weight overnight, didn't even consider that, all I could think about was I had earnt a nice big dinner with the couple kilo I had to move in :shifty:

BW-wise for Nats, I think that might depend on how heavy I am when I get back from holiday 8) Cheers bro.
