You monster

Nah I'm not a monster bro, save that for the Super heavies!

I might hit up OB to see what he reckons, he may remember me.

Sweet bro, yeah hit OB up, he's pretty busy around now but I'm sure when things die down a bit he'll be happy to help.

Hey OB mate i see your still watching over the powerlifting guys around here!

Nah mate moved back, didnt really work out over there. Anyway bro just looking into a squat program to get my numbers back up to where they should be. Ive had a bad neck injury and bad nerve damage so havnt lifted heavy in 4 years!

Without hijacking this page too much i was kinda looking into a smolov cycle for squats but wondering if any type of conditioning training is viable with it.

I do HIIT 3 mornings a week (because i couldnt lift a peanut) but ive been given the ALL CLEAR fron doc to resume heavy lifting now. Im still wanting to keep at the HIIT sessions but maybe move it all around for some heavy lifting as well.

This young fulla drizzit looking good mate and a few of the guys that were around here when i last was here have made some mean progress.

Anyway mate let me know what ya think.

  • Ok day today, honestly didn't feel great at the start. Mind was there but the weight wasn't quite moving as fast as I had hoped.
Pretty happy with how easy the beltless 200, and the belt-only 220 went up - both nice and deep. Was tempted to push further with the classic testing, but knew it would effect my end wrapped tests... so took the 10kg PB here and continued on with wraps.
Did a casual double with 220 wrapped just to begin to get the line right. Wraps were loose as which made it feel a wee bit tougher than it probably should've! But still popped up nice and easy.
240 popped up easy, nice and deep, wraps still loose. 260 looked pretty much identical to the 240, wraps much tighter now. Gave me confidence for a crack at the 280.
Now a few things went wrong for the 280. Probably waited too long after my 260 rep, I had been wrapping my brother for his tests as well as myself so my forearms/hands were cramping (meaning I couldn't get the wraps as tight as I'd have liked), also started getting ab cramp when I was bending to wrap! Kinda knew the wraps were a bit loose, as I was able to sit there for a while without feeling the familiar urge to get it over and done with because the circulation in my legs had been cut off :pfft: You'll see on the vid I had a lot of wrap left over...
Couldn't be bothered re-wrapping though so got on with it. Descent was horrible, rushed things and I think I lost my breath almost immediately. Dropped it probably a little bit deeper than I needed to, but after riding so close to "high squats" for a while, I wanted to make sure of it! Surprisingly popped up out of the hole ok and then hit a wall. Upper back lost tightness (flowed on from losing the breath) and started to curl over at the top. Threatened to lose the bar but managed to control it. Stood up straight, thought "phew that's over with" but then realised the bar was slipping, so struggled to rack it!
All in all, one of the dodgiest PBs I've taken for a while... but I'll take it! Had a sneaky goal of hopefully knocking off the 300 today, but even if I had corrected all of the things that went wrong with the 280 I honestly don't believe it would've been there. Set up 290 for a crack, but after about 5mins of fudging about I thought better of it and unloaded the bar. All good, will take the PB.
(p.s. I say 20kg, even though the 272.5 popped up easy at the comp, it failed on depth so it doesn't count. Heaviest "counted" lift prior to today was 260, you can judge for yourself on the vid if the 280 was deep enough)
  • Got to bench and I was pretty shagged, so warmups were pretty quick. I find I max better when I jump almost straight into it on the bench anyway.
Because I'd used a lot of my gas on the Squat, I figured I'd be happy to match my previous PB of 150kg (set like, 5 years ago when I was 115kg I think). 140 popped up sweet (wasn't mucking around with a pause today), and 150 went up pretty well, little bit of movement so can get a bit tighter, but not too much of a grind. Thought 155 was there but got it about an inch off the chest and just stalled. Out of gas. Called it in there and went home to watch UFC.

OH and cheers very much to Matty S for hanging around to spot, Alex for the roller lending, OB for the support and my bro for the spotting & stepping in for M.T on this program

So, fairly good day, again, minimum targets met. Would've loved to have knocked off the 300 and a 155/160 on bench but not to be! Still, good to know I'm within 20kg of the magical 7pps, and I'm certain I can get there by March 24th for the CDs

Happy new years all, video to follow shortly

Thanks SFS... I'd love to have a crack at a 500lb sandwich

Well done Drizzt, getting closer to the 300 fo' sure! This is just 4 weeks after Bbro - bloody good work! I thought you test was today for some reason :-s

I can see big things at CDs  Merry New year!

Thanks Vee! Yeah had hoped to knock the 300 off yesterday but wasn't to be. Ah well I guess the gains over the year haven't been too bad for a guy who's trainings are "obsessive compulsive" and doesn't get "optimal" gains :pfft:

Hopefully a bit of grind before CDs can get me there

And yep, was supposed to be today but I pushed it back a day because I'm used to my heavy days being on a Saturday. Merry new year to you too ma'am, seeyou in the House soon :salute:

Great work Drizzt! I see a national title in the near future.

Cheers Mike, dunno about near future but sometime down the track would be a goal, little while off yet though!

well done bro, earned after some serious hard yards!!

you reakon ull try a squat suit after you smash the big 300??

Thanks Red! Yeah definitely bro, it's the milestone I want to hit before I start getting suited. Kinda feel like not being equipped at the moment is my trump card, so want to milk the wraps for all they've got before struggling my way into a suit

"obsessive compulsive" and doesn't get "optimal" gains

faaark that cracked me up when i read that in the young fellas journal, bloody hard case

Ha same here, don't want to get into it too much but the proof is in my numbers I guess  And I haven't curled up and died, in fact, thirsty for more!

Given me new sig material though :pfft:

02.01.12 - Deload/Conditioning

103.6 today - very surprising, seeing as I weighed in at home at 106.8 last night :shifty: :shifty: :pfft: Very light, circuit-ish stuff today.

  • Circuit
    Walking, between 2-3hours worth
    Loosening deadlifts @ bar/40kg
    GHRs, 3 x 10 @ bw
    RHEs, 3 x 10 @ 30kg
    Face pulls, 4 x 15 @ stack
    Cable pull-throughs, 4 x 15 @ ?

Wanted to do box jumps but the soles of my feet were a bit torn up from the walk in (damned chucks) which made landings really painful...

May be back in tomorrow to do a little bit of squatting and pressing, but it will be my last day off work before getting back in the office, so may just chill out, see how I feel in the morning anyways

Awesome work Drizzt, keep it tight and a 300 at CDs for sure

On the note of tightness, couldn't help but notice your elbows seemed a bit far back? Could have been a contributing factor, maybe not. Might be something to think about. I had a quick look at some of your other vids and elbows seemed about the same regardless of weight, so could have all been down to the lost breath you mentioned. Bloody good effort to save the lift after that

Still thinking of another go through the 5x5 to see you through to CDs?

Cheers Phed!

Re: elbows yeah it's a complicated beast for me. Initially (pre-smolov) I had quite a close grip, and never had the problem of elbows kicking back. But during smolov when I pinched a nerve in my shoulder, it made having the close grip too painful, so I had to shift it out so I didn't drop in agony after every set :pfft:

But this also had an effect of loosening up my shoulders - good way to demonstrate what I mean, is to squeeze your scaps together and then try to move your arms back, should be tough to do? Now relax them and try to do the same...

So what this means is, if I don't actually concentrate on keeping my upper back tight (and chest up/out) during the lift, my elbows seem to want to kick back, which makes my chest drop and the bar roll up as you'd have seen in the vid. 280 rolling up to your neck isn't incredibly comfortable :pfft: So I believe it made the lift look (and obviously) feel a lot harder than I'm capable of.

Solution? Slowly trying to move the grip back in I guess. I believe my shoulder issues are better now (touch wood) so we'll see how moving it back in maybe a finger spacing each week goes.

Also, once I get comfortable under the weights, I tend to be able to think more about the process under them. The same thing happened (although not quite to the same extent) when I first attempted 260 a little over a month ago... but the 260 a few days ago (my 3rd time doing it overall) was perfect. Just need to get used to the weight I reckon. Few more cracks at 280 and it'll be smooth as, mark my words ;)

As for 5 x 5, yep, hope to be starting it Tuesday next week

As for me... maybe do another one. Need to up my game. Been to the gym about 3 times since bbro. Went today and stupid shittyfitness was closed!

Meh - you wouldn't have liked CityFatness today, NZMM - full of new-years' resolution types, including a guy curling an empty oly bar in the squat rack

Do another comp tho.. it gets in the blood!

And now, back to your original programming smiley-signs108.gif D, learned a lot from your squats thread, but you didn't talk about how you managed nutrition, esp during Smolov. Any views ?

Hmmm, mostly seefood kinda diet, didn't have too many restrictions or rules in place, just upped the carbs on training days. But then I wasn't exactly fussy on non-training days if carbs offered themself to me either :shifty: Another big one was ensuring that I get a huge meal in after workouts. Used to pack something to have (the first time through Smolov anyway) but at the very least a protein shake immediately after to tide me over until I got home to make something.

Always starving after a Smolov session, and I've put back some huge amounts over the program(s)!

Still relatively lean-ish. No Mike Zero kinda state, carry most of my weight in the legs and a bit on the hips, but otherwise I believe I'm about as lean as I was when I was in the mid-late 90s earlier last year.

In saying all of the above, M.T and I saw a dietician just before starting Smolov in December, I'm yet to implement it (didn't want to start with a double whammy of Smolov + Christmas) but will probably start Monday next week.

  • Not a lot to say today, just mucked about. Took the opportunity to do some pressing that wasn't bench, and ended up turning it into it a shoulders/core session.

Also awesome to see Matt getting an easy 240 belt-only squat, and just missing the 250, crazy! As well as big Bayasa just missing a 240 bench with a slingshot on

Was on my way out when I got a txt from HarryB (I can confirm he does exist and is very large!) saying he was keen to pop in for a look. He threw around a few weights but we didn't do too much, had a bit of a chat and he gave me some good advices on Bench and Dead in particular. We've scheduled a legs session for Saturday morning with a couple of the other lads which should be interesting
