Thanks! But nah, not doing the comp, test day is the day after. Could've shifted it back a day to do it at the comp, but I only realised about a couple of weeks ago that it coincided with my test week. Then I would've had to fork out fees to sign up to the NZPF/CDPA (harder with a Vegas trip coming up!), and I'm about 6kg above my target weight class :shifty:

Ahhhhh gotcha. All the best for today! 7ddf61e0.gif

Thanks fellas (and fellettes)

12.06.11 - Smolov Base Cycle, 1RM Test Day

99.5 today - big weight because I had a large breakfast which I don't usually do before weekend squat sessions, but did today because I thought I'd need the energy. Weighed in at 98.2 pre-breakfast on the home scales. Was just hoping to be under 100 tbh, and squeaked under so that's fine with me.

  • Squats (sets, reps, weights)
    Warmups
    1 x 5 @ 60kg
    1 x 3 @ 100kg
    1 x 2 @ 120kg
    1 x 2 @ 130kg
    1 x 2 @ 140kg
    1 x 1 @ 150kg
    1 x 1 @ 160kg
    1 x 1 @ 170kg (+b)
    Business Sets
    1 x 1 @ 180kg (+b)(=max used for Smolov)
    1 x 1 @ 190kg (+b)(+5kg PB)
    1 x 1 @ 200kg (+b)(+15kg PB)
    1 x 1 @ 205kg (+b/w)(+20kg PB)
    1 x 1 @ 210kg (+b/w)(+25kg PB)
    1 x 1 @ 215.5kg (+b/w)(+30.5kg PB)
    1 x 1 @ 220kg (+b/w)(+35kg PB) 8)

  • Pretty damned awesome day today from both myself and M.T (who also got himself a +35kg PB @ 185) I say that I've got a 200 in the past, but I very highly doubt that it would've been to proper depth, so I'm using the (very dusty) 185kg that I did earlier this year as my PB.
Warmups weren't feeling the best, the hips in particular were creaking around a bit which was worrying, but I should know by now that once they're warmed up they behave - and did so from around 170 onwards :)
It was no secret that 200 was my target for today, and I was thinking leading into it that I'll probably need to wrap up... not the case. Just knee sleeves + belt for it, and it was fairly easy. 2x bodyweight here.
At this point though, I may or may not have got 205 without the wraps, so I wrapped up just to be sure - I was of the mind that anything above 200 for the day will be a bonus. 205, and 210 went up without any trouble at all, so I decided to keep going. I hit 215 PLUS the .5kg (using 2x mini 250g plates) so I could beat Quigley's squat on Wilks :pfft: And that was pretty smooth too, which gave me the confidence to go for 5x PPS - which I hadn't even considered hitting in the leadup to today.
No doubt that this was the toughest rep of the day (duh), but after a very small grind just out of the hole, I stood up without much trouble at all. IMHO there was still a bit left in the tank after this - I believe there probably is a 225-230 in the legs, but the length of the session was beginning to take it's toll, so I left it there.
Incredibly happy with the result, a wrapless 200 was already more than I had hoped for, so to nail 20kg on top of that was hugely satisfying
Negative to come out of today is the wrapping aggravated my TA muscle once again, and the whole lower leg seized up after the session. It's really inflamed right now, so I'm trying to ice it down. When we sat down for our meals after the workout, the pain from walking there (maybe slightly more than a 1km walk) was absolutely incredible. It's getting really hard to bend the foot upwards, and stretching the foot downwards leaves a really painful dull ache (similar to getting a dead arm I guess). Will speak to the Doc about it on Tuesday as I'm a wee bit worried - I think I can see a stretch mark forming on my shin from the leg being so inflamed

Anyway, thanks to those who came in to support and spot today - Costa, Quigley, Sam and OB, and of course to my training partner M.T who just keeps raising the bar which is awesome to have in a TP  I knew when he got a 35kg PB I had to push something similar, and the 220 may not have even been attempted if he wasn't there

Vid to follow later on today/tonight.

Boom! Great gain bro..leave 5pps behind now and aim high 8)

oh and look after that leg man :?

Thanks big guy, inflammation has died down a bit after icing, but can't have this happening after every squat session :(

Cheers PnW! The injury is something that kicked in last week, but hasn't quite felt as bad as it did today... hopefully it's just a passing thing

Amazing results Drizzt, must be over the moon. All that squatting has definitely paid off  Any idea what you're wanting at the end of the program now?

Cheers Phed! Yeah really stoked, had "only" hoped for +15 today to get the elusive 200, so indescribably awesome to surpass that by so much.

As for the end of the program - it's funny you mention it, as what I got today was what I had in mind for the end of the intense cycle! M.T and I are going to reassess this week and see what the best course of action is from now - the gains have been so great, that we're not sure we need to delve into the intense cycle... but this is just a thought at the moment. We're gonna sleep on it and have a chat about it over the next day or two.

If this leg doesn't improve, the choice may be taken out of our hands, as it's going to be tough enough dealing with the huge increase in weights, let alone the pain from wrapping up every session. See how we go...

That's fantastic news! Does this mean you can squat in the big kids 220kg area now?

Thanks Vee! It does indeed - that was the first thing I thought about after I completed the 220 rep - "Yusss, I can use the big-boys rack now!" :pfft: :pfft:

Jesus H fucking Pogo sticks!!!!!
+35kg PB

Bro ...well fucking done!. Im staring at the PC right now with these facials  thats an awsome effort dude

220 squat, thats good money

Thanks big guy! :)

Well done

Cheers OH! :)

Thats amazing gain bro. Definately all that hard work and lots of squats have paid off.

Thanks Groovy, seems like a long time when you're doing it, but looking back, it hasn't really been too long. I'll never question Smolov again :D

Big jump mate, good work, got a vid of it? (didn't read everything)

What do you accredit the huge gains to? Surely not just the Smolov programme?

the shoes 8)

For those that think this is a laugh (maybe it is a little), I notice a huge difference between my ball shoes and my wrestling boots. Flat and thin soles FTW!

Cheers bro! Yep, uploading vid now.

I attribute the first 15-20kg of the PB to Smolov, yep  The extra is coming from adding the wraps in (which I had never used before Smolov).

Small things helping are the knee sleeves when I'm not wrapping (at most I reckon I get maybe +5kg out of them), the shoes allowing me to sit back a little further, and making more of a conscious effort to get the chest up, and elbows under the bar. Add it all together and these refinements have all done their part to post the PB today

And the all blue uniform he wore today laughing.gif

Ha, and that! If the superstition helps to set PBs, then I'll keep doing it  Cheers again for the help today mate.

Can't say I'm surprised

Great work.

Really? I was! :pfft: Cheers mate :)
