markm
Interested in people's opinion. You reckon you can build just as good Quads by doing just 45 degree leg press and leg extensions, but no squats??Reason I ask is that I have a weakness in the groin region. I have had 3 hernia ops in my time and now have mesh on one side but not on the other. I know that I can't really do squats as I'll end up with another one, but I can seem to do leg press ok.Are squats really a must for impressive quads, or can you build 'em just as good with leg press do ya reckon?? Pseudonym
IMO no excercise is irreplaceable. If you can't do squats, that's unfortunate because it is a great exercise. However you can still reach the same destination through other routes. The only point I'd make is: don't limit yourself to just leg press and leg extensions. Try to get a few other exercises in there for variety. I don't know how sissy squats would be for someone who is hernia-prone - I think they should be fine, but try them cautiously the first time (they could be the very worst thing possible, and I'd hate to be responsible for causing a hernia!) If you're not familiar with them, here's how.
lazyone
Yah, theres heaps of quad dominant exercises out there. Squats are probably the best (IMO) exercise, but you could still get sum great quads... just mite take a lil longer. So as well as the leg press & leg extensions, you could possibly try:Bulgarian squatsSissy squats (like pseudo recommended)Lunges (walking/static/backwards)StepupsIm sure ppl can add to this... of_wolf_and_man
yea i agreee with both pseudo and layzone. i feel that lunges (wahtever way you do them) are super good for the quads ay. i always do lunges and then leg extensions straight after and THAT IS A KILLER. Deadlifts might help with the legs too but im not too much of an expert on deadlifts (its a shame....)If you really wana do squats and dont wana risk further injury, the smith machine is always a good way to help u get started ay. I owe that machine a lot of things lol..(you have probably heard all of this before but just thought i'd put in my 2 cents)

markm
Is ROM = Range Of Movement ??
Pseudonym
Range Of Motion/Movement = close enough! Is there any particular angle or activity you need to avoid when you've had a hernia?
markm
No, nothing really specific. You can just feel when too much strain is going on the groin. I have now learnt after 3 hernias when to back off.Sometimes it'll feel ok at the time of the exercise, but the groin will hurt like hell the next day. Pretty good indication not to push too hard with that particular exercise. I can pretty much do anything these days except squats. Actually, I can do them, but I just can't go hard out with 'em. Oros
Try doing DB squats, DB lunges, Sissy squats then leg extentions.Because the DB are being held at hip level, there not as much "compression" on your body as there would be with a BB across your shoulders. The DB's are easier to drop if you feel any twinges that you know you should not be feeling.Light front squats on a Smith machine might be worth a very cautious attempt. markm
Thanks Oros, might give 'em a try.
Cammo
I started a new routine about 4 weeks ago - before that I did nothing but extensions & leg press for my quads.I only use squats & leg press in my new routine & am finding much better progress. I'm not sure I'll ever hop back on a leg extension machine to be honest (not to flash for the knees either!!).
