poos_n_wees
I heard that Daryl Tomuli got his procard in NZ?? Is this true?
Wynton
It could be true he did win overall in the 2005 Nationals so doesn't that mean he is eligable to apply for a pro card?
waldo
Apparently he's in Perth now, has his Procard, but it didn't come thru NZ. That's what I heard thru the reliable grapevine that is NZ Bodybuilding as a whole.
Marcus
It's bullshit that he can't get his pro-card through NZ. Has the NZFBB ever comented why they aren't giving out pro-cards?
waldo
Probably got something to do with drug testing i'd say. Dunno why we don't follow Aussie and have a pro-qualifier each year. That's how Luke Wood, Jon Davie and others got theirs.
rigger
Even in Aussie the Pro Cards can get handed out without going thru their Pro qulifier. Neil Gardener got his one Christmas a couple if years back. Question, should all Overall Nationals Winners in Nz automatically get their Pro Card just like overseas? waldo
Sorry, you are right, Neil got his at Xmas. I guess a certain standard should be attained, highlighted by the likes of Neil's non placement at the Aussie Pro show, and a few aussie pro's looking not quite as good as the top 6! Wynton
so whats stopping the NZFBB from giving procards? Does it cost them money to do so? Or are they only allowed to give a certain amount every 5 years (random figure) or so? As Waldo said it probaly has to do with the drug testing. Because of SPARC I don't think the NZFBB are allowed to show support towards an athlete who has failed a test or refuses to take a test because of their anti drug policies. JMO though I could be wrong?
deegee
Be intereted to know how many they have given out, and to whom over the last say 5 years

waldo
Couple of recent quotes from Neil Gardner:ok so winning an aust title SHOULD give you the right to turn pro? or was it an overall title, i don't remeber what year lee won the overall IFBB tile.In a round about way i'm saying that this is an example of someone who can win an overall and be good enough to be pro. that should be our bench mark for choosing pro BBers out of the ams, in OzThis one is in regards to his pro card:I won three au IFBB titles in different weight classes, one overall international title, and 6th place in the drug tested IFBB worlds. I then applied to the IFBB pro div for a pro card in 2004 with the written support of Local state IFBB rep, national IFBB rep ,and national pro div promoter.but you prolly already knew that BTW I think i may qualify as one of the oldest to recieve a pro card, outside of those who got thiers from the (now defunct, due to no masters MrO.) masters pro qualifierHe's got a good point, someone who can win an overall and be good enough to turn pro. As far as I can remember, Marc Rainbow, and BJ Johns managed to place in Pro line-ups, Justin Rys competed but was DQ'd in Australia. Now to ask a question, hopefully I don't get flamed, but do any of the recent nationals winners (apart from Moe!) have the same standard as these guys? rigger
You have to take into account the guys having to pass the drug test. Moe was probably a step up but then he failed a drug test around that time. So over the last 5 or 6 years whoever has won the overall has done well considering they have to have a drug test and they still look pretty darn good. Those guys if they want a Pro Card they should be given one. I'm sure they would grow a bit so to speak once they got their card.
2guns
daryll failed the test and did a runner i heard. and imo y give the nz overall winner a procard when they wouldnt even be equal to the quality of say guys coming 5th and 6th at an american provincial comp.if winners are truly worthy of a procard and dnt get one then have a bitch and a moan but until then just chill out

I reckon we need to get out there and compete with the big guys if we want the standard to improve here. The NZFBB's prolly being a bit naive with regards to the drug testing. There are ppl here that deserve procards, so give them one and like rigger said, they know whats required and'll probably do what it takes to grow and compete overseas. point of view
There has to be a standard but the NZFBB need to start giving some out for the good of the sport.Hey guys anyone in the NZFBB can apply for their Pro Card. However to have your application for a pro card endorsed by the NZFBB you have to be is in "good standing" with the National Federation. Now what does that mean? Well first you have to have won a National Title and lets face it if you test positive you are disqualified and have not won a National Title. The other parts of the criteria is based on the committee's opinion of that particular athlete.Yes there have been some excellent physiques who wanted to go on to get their pro card. The one that stands out to me is Mike Debenham who won the Nationals(over 90kg) in 2000 but refused the drug test so bingo, not applicable and what a shame as he is a genetically gifted man.Another one who I personally think could have been our best pro was Lon Alexander who finished 2nd to Mike but also refused the test.Hugh Willis is another giant who I think could have done well.BJ Johns did compete in the Ironman but tested positive to diuretics.I do know that as I trained him.I don't remember Marc Rainbow's placing in the Ironman but Kevin O'Grady who was domiciled in Sydney and trained with BJ over there placed(I think 8th)in the Ironman. The following Kiwis as far as I can remember who got their pro card were BJ Johns, Marc Rainbow, Justin Rhys, Jonathon Davie, Kevin O'Grady, Mo Moussawi, Carmen Cotter, and Jenny Fitzgerald. So the solution is get big,win Nationals, apply for pro card but test NEGATIVE!(how do you get big and test negative?). waldo
HUGH WILLIS! What a beast! That's a name I haven't heard for a looooooong time.
rigger
Hey interesting Topic guys. Be in "Good standing with the Federation". Well I guess that counts me out. The other thing to with genetics is having the right genetics for taking large doses of supps to be a Pro bodybuilder. Not just the bod to begin with but the right "receptors" so to speak to soak up the supplements. You never can tell how someone will respond until they jump in the deep end. So yeah most of our guys would be as good as anywhere else if given the opportunity.
point of view
HUGH WILLIS! What a beast! That's a name I haven't heard for a looooooong time.Yes Waldo you are right.Hugh Willis was a beast in terms of size.Amazing width with a great structure that could carry 120 kg ripped. He was also a great sportsman who would help any one with a training problem. He represented NZ at the IFBB worlds about 1998 when Fuchs won the over 90kg but who the hell can get to 120kg natural?(and I mean at 5% bodyfat)Please don't tell me to use Tribulus.I saw Hugh at a NABBA show last year and he looked great.Within 10 minutes he had 15 people around him while he gave a seminar in the foyer of the Bruce Mason theatre.Great physique, great guy.
