We're back online!

Well, that's the good news. The bad news is that only some of us are.

After our server crashed late last night, the techies have been working around the clock to restore it. Unfortunately, it appears they had to roll back several days - so any posts over the last few days will have been lost, and the 10 or so new members who registered in that time have also been lost.

I'm very sorry about this. Especially as I hadn't had a chance to read Monday's posts. Please post them again if you can.

If you're one of the new members whose registration was lost, please sign up again! We really do want to get to know you!

Finally, rest assured we're taking steps to find out what happened, and ensure it doesn't happen again.

A company called I'm Hosted. At this stage, I'm not sure whether we'll be staying with them or not. I'd like to, because I've found their tech support to be mostly excellent. But obviously, we can't afford to lose several days' worth of topics/posts/PMs/members either. We'll see what solutions they can offer.

You have to weigh up how many problems you have had with them in the past, coupled with the reasoning for the failure - I would expect in a datacentre that the servers would be spec'd with high-redundancy components though!!! (Dual power supplies, fault-tolerant storage arrays, multiple CPU's, etc...)

Good tech supp is getting hard to find with hosts though...

Probably best to stay with them for now. The whole Internet seems to have been having problems. Several of the sites I visit have been down over the last few days, and I doubt it is all I'm Hosted's fault.

There were DNS resolution issues yesterday in New Zealand as Orcon had a few problems which may account for some of the sites being down... To have a server 'crash is a pretty rare event in a datacentre though!

Do you lease a server itself or just a portion of a server, Pseudonym?

 That is very true! I can't remember how many hosts we went through in the early days of this forum, but it was far too many!

Our problems were unrelated to any DNS issues - in fact, the DNS was about the only thing that continued to work! I'm reasonably confident in the hardware this company provides - the one flaw is that they only take a backup once a week (a fact I've only just discovered). It amazes me, because they seem so good in all other respects, but allowing the loss of up to 7 days of data is very nearly unforgivable, in my currently fired up opinion!

One option, if we did decide to stay with ImHosted, would be to set up a second account on a different server, and schedule our own backups transferred via FTP. It annoys me, because we shouldn't have to resort to doing it ourselves...

Ah... The wonders of IT! I have found that if you want something done properly (especially when it comes to back-ups!!!) Do it yourself...

I take it you don't have the option of sticking an external USB drive on your current server and backing up yourself to that?

Will suck if you have to get another server out there though... What size is the back-up roughly?

The support guys must still be consulting the Bastard Operator From Hell (check him out at http://www.theregister.co.uk) Excuse Generator to come out wth something to keep the punters happy...

"Due to atmospheric interference, and teh fact that the hamster running our generator has arthritis, we had an interface flux in the main circuit which tripped the..." Well, ya know what I mean!!!
