Deadlifting Frequency

Recommended Posts

I have just added Deadlifting to my routine, three times a week.

3x6 Mon, Wed and Fri.

I've read this is too much...too "taxing on the CNS". I didn't know you could wear/tire out your CNS if you were well nourished. Everything within reason of course.

I must be missing something here.

Obviously i'm not using a heavier weight just yet as i'm making sure I get my form right first. As I start adding weight, I can understand that I may not be able to lift this often once I start getting the weight up.

However, for now all i've read is that once, maybe twice, is all you need to do (at only one set per workout).

Can anyone explain why? Or offer advice?

3x6 at max effort 3 times a week will be taxing. You can always play with rep ranges, or go easy on some days.

I find even with squats if you go all out it leaves you crippled for days to come. At a low volume yo might be able to get away with it, or you could cycle your max deadlift days with supportive movements, straight leg deads, dead from a rack etc.

P-Man did an experiment where he squated everyday or something. Sheiko?

He'd have some good advice for this.

frequency = faster strength gains imo. you can over-tax your cns though. if you have a typing program on your computer you can see whether your cns is really taxed from how your wpm varies. lower back is meant to be the slowest recovering body part but from my experience your body adapts to increased frequency reasonably quickly.

I'd argue that frequency = faster technique improvement, which would appear as strength due to being able to lift heavier. Not really going to comment on frequency for strength gains, as different things work best for different people.

Because you've just started deadlifting I think 3x a week is fine because you're still learning the movement. You shouldn't wear out the CNS because you're not necessarily lifting maximal weights. Once you get a bit more confident with your technique and start lifting heavier, I wouldn't advice 3 heavy sessions a week. As chemo said one heavy conventional deadlift session a week and then on other days use other movements that transfer to the deadlift.

I agre that high volume high frequency ala sheiko, bulgarian/chinese systems are good for strength gains. However I think deadlifting heavy more than once a week in most cases is setting you up for failure. Heavy deads will screw you up good the next day and can have a negative effect if your squatting the next day. My deads always felt strongest when I cycled percentages on a weekly basis and then did one all out set. However KK deadlifts more than once per week, and there is a finnish deadlifting program out there thats deads 2x per week and they have some strong mofos in viking land!
