Yip give or take a couple KG when he won Overalls in 2008 he was under 70kg. Bloody nice guy too

Gee, I had no idea that a guys weighing less than 70 kg had won the overall NZIFBB title. I don't know anything about bodybuilding but that does surprise me. Still, I suppose it's all about what the judges are after.

Daniel won the Overall title in 2008 as he was a COMPLETE package of size, symmetry and proportion. Plenty of big guys are big for the sake of being big.....the other aspects big does not always make..... Incredibly well-deserved.

Certainly not trying to detract from the individual. I defer to your greater knowledge here. :) I am sure he deserved to win and he has an incredible physique. I just find the whole thing interesting and it must be incredibly difficult to compare a sub 70kg bodybuilder with someone who is say, 105 kg plus on stage. That's at least a 50% difference in "size".

Personally, I think the bigger the better in bodybuilding. Sort of like the stronger the better. But Daniel clearly shows that the "little guy" can thrive in NZ bodybuilding.

Mate, I am a has been powerbuilder (whatever that is). My 70kg left leg lacks the complete package of size, symmetry and proportion. You on the other hand my friend are another proposition.

Under 70kg from memory but that was in 2008.

Really? You have to be kidding? So Steve Orton has about 30-35kg on him?

The last I heard he was up around 74kgs on stage.

Dan competes at his best condition, under 70. he has walked on stage at about 73 but i cant remember if that was for a guest pose or just qualifying.

In 2007 he was the athletes that pushed me the hardest for the overall NZ title. i was 85kg and dan was 68kg. I judged him in 2008 nats and his condition and balance was just spot on, there were some competitors that could have pushed him harder if they were in better condition, but thats bodybuilding isn't it, pure fact they went so dan deserved the win.

I think Mike makes a good point. It's who is the best on the day, I have seen plenty of big guys get beaten by the little guy on condition etc. All very well saying "if i was in a bit better condition there would be no comparison" well guess what you wernt so it don't mean shit!

I can't argue with the logic of the best guy or girl on the day winning the chocolates. The bit I struggle with is the difficulty of comparing a guy weighing 150 pounds with a guy weighing 240 pounds. Again, what do I know and I know we have experienced judges to sort this out. But it must be difficult. I suppose that's why we don't see the little guy winning overall titles very often.

Unfortunately in NZ it's very rare to have someone 240lbs on stage, and when you do it's even more rare that they are in any sort of good condition. When you typically think of bodybuilding you think big! However that's just one of the criteria for judging, you also have symmetry, proportion, seperation, vascularity and condition which are all of equal importance (according to typical judging criteria). For Dan's height he isn't small anyway, he may look small next to someone else, but when he's going hit the nail on the head everytime with just about all of the other things the judges look for it wouldn't really be a hard decision.

Good point, well made. I must say that bodybuilding for me is about size. I love seeing the big dudes with freaky mass. I get less inspired by the little guys who don't carry alot of muscle but have worked really hard on not eating for 12-20 weeks. I'm not talking about Hibbs who is a class act in the sub 70kg class.
