Hey 63, most ppl choose what comp they want to enter depending on how long they think they need to prepare for it - eg. Doing a comp in June means you have about 4 months to get your shit together (diet/routine/supplements/trunks etc) as opposed to picking one later in the year to give you extra time...

A friend of mine picked a comp because he heard this other guy who beat him in a previous comp entered and he wanted to beat him this time round... then theres the ppl who enter comps because there were alot of competitors the year before, hence.. more competition.

In my case, I usually have to pick a comp thats quite late in the year 'cos I need to save a bit of $$$ (all the costs add up fast!!) and plus Im the most unco polynesian I know, so it takes me aaggeess to learn routines (forever changing my mind about the song I wanna use) and perfect the compulsories n all that. Not to mention the fact that I need time to build up the courage to even get on stage!! If he's studying, it'll be a good idea to keep exam time well away from the date of the comp... I made this mistake with my first comp... and yeah, it was screwed up :banging:

Might wanna explain to him the differences between the 2 federations too..? And check the calendars (they're online I think) for any comps in (or close to) Waikato?

Hope this helps

mate nothing more really needs to be said on that one.

don't do them near exams.

do a small regional one first around mid year if you want a taste.

if you are semi serious give it a go getting one near the nationals

pick a federation that suits your ethos.

NZFBB or NABBA or PIBBA.

apart from that tell them to have fun and make sure they have time to reach their 3-5% bf foer the show. normally 3 months is enough time but if they are fatter a bit longer may be needed.

The NABBA Waikato show is always a good competition to do! Shelley Boyes runs an excellent show for the Waikato region - definitely worth looking into! :)

I agree with you,Shelley does run an excellent show and if it is your first show then doing it in Hamilton makes sense to control your costs.

Also doing a NABBA show might be more comfortable for you as they allow one friend/helper backstage to apply your tan, pump up and just be there for you.The NZFBB do not allow friends backstage which can be daunting for a first time competitor but they have to take all security steps to prevent any tampering with drinks etc because of the drug testing

Also Nabba have 10 ? compulsory poses which give you more opportunity to show off your physique.Side chest and triceps are done from both sides in NABBA where as NZFBB is just the side you prefer.

Also NABBA have a most muscular which seems to be every ones favourite pose(ladies excepted).

Also in October Brian Smith and Kaye O'Neil(NZFBB) run an excellent show in Hamilton which has been successfull for many years.

Good luck to you, as with most things you always remember your first!
