What do you wish you knew as a newbie that you know now!

That when it comes to training frequencey less is more.

That when "bulking" its not the scales you should be looking at its the mirror and your belt notches - just because your getting heavier doesnt always mean your putting on muscle - your just getting fatter.

That bodybuilding is a marathon not a sprint!

And a 2nd for a couple previous said -

That money on supplements is a waste of time if your diet is rubbish.

That its technique not weight on the bar!

And i really wish I could take back my first year or two of bullshit isolation movements and instead just base my training around the big 3.

Some great posts here, awesome idea, Nate :nod:

I'd tell myself to:

  • Learn how to eat better
  • Learn better technique on all lifts
  • Pay attention to posture/muscle imbalance
  • Work the isolation movements around the big 3, do not shove the big 3 to the background to spend more time on the gunz
  • Squat moar
  • You do not know as much as you think you do
  • Rest more

Heck, all of this I've learnt in the past year or so (since I've been on this site), and I now know I've merely achieved an alright base of knowledge. Shows what a great resource folk on here are :notworthy:

* Eat more

* Sleep more! :nod:

* Avoid hard stimulants :shifty:

* Leave the booze binges alone

Damn, the lack of sleep is a killer.

Why am I not growing, I train hard? cause you only sleep 4 hours a night. douche...

my youth was shocking. Trying to grow, but partying all the time. dumb.

While I agree it's more about execution as opposed to the weight, you've still gotta go heavy, weight does matter too.

Branch Warren said it best (although many would say he's the poster child for "loose" form) "Your body knows the difference between 300 and 500 pounds!"

As a beginner, learn your technique for sure though before adding on the plates

if u want to get bigger eat 500calories more than you do when you are maintaining weight.

there's doing squats and then there's being soft

Just cause you think your eating a lot it doesnt mean you are

gym economics - ie why do single arm preacher curl (or something isolated and small) if you can go do an exercise that involves all your muscles

(personally, when young and competing) eat less carbs when cutting up for comp

all you need is 45mins in the gym....dont mess round with 3hour weight sessions

dont sit around for 3-4min rests in between sets

squat right to the ground when squatting (FULL RANGE OF MOTION!)

tuck your scapulas in when benching so you don't blow your rotators out
