Well I won't be competing (not due to politics, but due to not being anywhere near in shape enough to go near a stage  ) but I hope to go and watch. But I'm going to take my chances on tickets on the day - wonder if there will still be a stupid Ticketek fee on tickets on the day? That just annoys me, hate Ticketek.

Go to the morning show, you'll enjoy it !

Yeah, I want to go to morning and evening. I was a wee bit late and missed the beginning of the morning show last year, then when the evening show started I saw someone I kind of know up on stage and was gutted I'd missed his judging. He'll be competing this year - Chris the train guard, masters or seniors (or whatever, oldies) men, came second last year - bloody character!

Yes, Chillicat - but at least you got to enjoy Chris's thoroughly entertaining routine, and the fun he, Steve and Glenn had during the posedown (Masters 50+) class. It was the ideal way to open the show and really got the audience warmed up! Great to hear Chris will be there again!

I loved his routine, and their posedown was hilarious!

Just a note of interest to the competitors at this event:

As with the North Island Champs in Masterton last Saturday, the Wellington Champs on Sept 18 will allow competitors to do a second individual class if they want to. This was a very popular option for those who did the North Island Champs at the weekend - just over half (18 of 37) did two individual classes - and 6 competitors (3 couples) did Mixed Pairs as well!

The only restriction is you can't do a Novice AND and Open class, but you can do Masters/Junior and Novice/Open, Classic and Physique (men), Body Fitness and Figure or Physique (women) etc.

The standard entry fee is $25 to do one class - doing a 2nd class will cost just an extra $15 (basically to cover the cost of the extra medals) making it $40 in total for the entry fee (Mixed Pairs as always does not cost any extra to compete in).

Anyone doing two classes will only do their routine to music once at the night show - i.e. the first time when they come on stage. We had a few classes in the 2nd half of last Saturday's show where all the competitors had already done their routine. In this situation I just got the top-3 competitors out for a posedown or to do a few poses or quarter turns and then do the medal presentation.

Also note that the Body Fitness and Figure judging is different to last year - the judges at registration will be making sure all these competitors are fully aware of what is expected of them on the day.

HMMMM 2 classes , sounds a bit strange , i dont know of any other federation doing this groundbreaking stuff . mind you it would boost profits and stats would look good ie you could have 25 competitors and they all did 2 classes you could say that there were 50 entrants. I cannot understand why you would allow a competitor to compete in two different classes it just doesnt make sense .

Why strange?

You get a Olympians (Carl Lewis) doing several events plus BB competitors doing their individual event then couples.

I can see it was possibly originally motivated by lower numbers though but good to see some of the Masters competing in their event but also gauging themselves in the open events against the youngies. Bloody good I reckon!

Maybe this new concept has a few of the youngies worried about the oldies competing twice and stealing their trophy :pfft: .

Well said, Gasp. I can confirm that it was a VERY popular option for many competitors last weekend. It not only allowed them to get more value for their money (and more reward for all the months of hard work and preparation), it solved a common problem for many of "which class do I do?", plus gave the sponsors and spectators more value for their money.

Hawks mentioned the possibility of it being a way to improve profits and boost competitor numbers. The way Bevan and I did it last Saturday (and will apply on Sept 18) by charging only $15 extra for a 2nd class actually means we have less profit when you allow for the cost of extra medals and prizes. And whether we say we had 37 competitors or 55 entries (incl 18 2nd entries) really isn't an issue as ultimately it surely better for everyone (as outlined above re value for money) but also significantly reduces the number of classes with just one competitor (while some like no competition, most would much prefer someone else in their lineup).

I don't know the background for the decision (i.e. allowing a 2nd class) which was made by the Exec earlier this year, but it apparently is done in many shows overseas, and I'm all in favour of it having seen it in action last weekend.

Seems an odd decision as in most sports you compete in one class (i.e. open, junior or masters), differs from Gasps view about events rather than classes (which suits the couples & open example better).

At the end of the day its up to each Federation to run as they see fit, so if the competitors like it so be it!

Carl Lewis: 100m, 200m, Relay, Long jump.

Masters bodybuilding: standing in a thong and flexing muscles.

80-90kg bodybuilding: standing in a thong and flexing muscles.

Can't exactly see the argument that bodybuilding has different disciplines. If the oldies are good enough then they get to compete against the youngies in the open.

But hopefully we'll get to see the judges taking a hard line against physique competitors doing athletic etc. not to mention physique girls doing figure. the criteria for each division will hopefully be followed, not just a "they look like they have put a lot of work in, so we'll give them the trophy."

My point is they only compete in one class in most sports.... i.e. Powerlifting, a Master may compete as a Master or as an Open competitor, not both.

But as I said up to NZFBB to make that call, and if their members want both classes available so be it!

As terry Said, the competitors seemed to enjoyed doing 2 classes, other than couples I was ineligble to enter more than 1 class, as could only do open, but wasnt yet old enough to do masters, My wife however was just mentioning that she quite enjoyed it, It meant only getting tanned up the once and since already tanned might as well do, Not only that she has now qualified for 2 classes at nationals instead of having the extra costs for doing and extra show, if she couldnt decide what class to do at nats.

What is a more prestigious title- Novice champion or Open?

In the 1995 Australasians in Sydney, competitors did multiple classes, masters doing novice or open etc. The part that I thought was off was the novice men then coming back and doing open as well, without knowing where they placed.

The 2nd place getter in the Novice mens (open weight division) then won the open mens 80-90kg, as the Novice winner was not a trophey hunter but a proud kiwi with a bit of potential and a bad pony tail there to do the job NZ had asked him to do...WIN.

I don't mind the masters mixing it up in regional shows with the open, and Terry and Bevan have managed the posing situation well, but not mixing with the Novices. In the end the best will still meet the best in the Overall.

Congrats to Supri too, I've always been a big fan of his physique if you check my very old posts.

We had 38 competitors register last night - with 17 of them electing to do a 2nd individual class at this event. There will be more registering this morning, so it will be good-sized show once again with some excellent quality!

There are only about 50 tickets left for the night show (5pm start), so if anyone wants to come tonight and doesn't have a ticket then please get down to the venue this morning to ensure you don't miss out - door sales from 11am. There are about 150 Judging show (11.30am start) tickets left, so as usual I doubt we will sell out this session.

Good luck to all the competitors, today - I'll post an update with results tomorrow!
