Research Study

Hi there, I am a researcher looking to recruit body builders/weight lifters for my study of kidney function in Christchurch. I am interested in body builders/weight lifters as these group of people will have the highest muscle mass with low body fat percentage. I am looking for better screening strategies to test for kidney failure. Currently laboratory markers are based on creatinine which is highly dependent on muscle mass. Therefore people with high muscle mass will be wrongly classified as having kidney failure. There are 2 visits for my study and you will be remunerated for your time. If anyone in Christchurch is interested please contact me at

janice_chew@medlabsouth.co.nz.

All results and information given are strictly confidential. Thanks

Aww shucks, flattery will get you everywhere! :pfft:

Welcome to the forums, Janice. Hopefully some of our members on the Mainland can help you out. One question - given that creatine is a common dietary supplement among bodybuilders, how does that affect a) your study, and b) the current screening procedures?

Interesting & timely for me!

I have had a year of high creatinine levels, without using any creatine.

Of late it spiked even higher. I did a little research & suggested my GP test for protein in my urine to determine whether or not there was renal damage or the high creatine levels were solely due to increased muscle mass - no protein in my urine, question answered!

Can only conclude the recent spike in creatinine due to dietary changes (moved from Tuna to steak three times daily, red meat higher in creatine).

Good luck with the study!

Yes, creatine supplementation has had some debate on whether it affects kidney function. It depends on what is use to measure kidney function. If you use the blood marker that all labs currently use "creatinine" you will have increased levels and therefore incorrectly classified as having kidney failure. For my study procedures, I am using gold standard methods to measure kidney clearance, therefore my results will be independent of creatine supplementation. Hope this answers question 1.

For my screening procedure, I am measuring height and weight by bioelectrical impedance. It gives a rough idea of body fat percentage. On visit two of my study, I am again using gold standard procedures using DEXA scans which will give you an accurate measurement of body fat percentage.

I will then evaluate the effect of muscle mass and body composition on current markers. I am looking at new markers which are independent of muscle mass.

How does one do a private message? It keeps telling me there is no message...

you need to make one more post then you'll be able to send a PM :D

You should be able to read PMs at any stage; you just can't write them until you've got 5 posts under your belt. To check your PM inbox, go to Forums (at the top of the page) and select Private Messages from the submenu.

Anyone in CHCH should jump at the chance to get in the DEXA scanner! Beats any other measure of body comp hands down.

Agreed. If anyone does this, get your gym to take a BF test with calipers as well, then let us know the results. I'd love to know how close they are.

In the research world, a lot ot dietitians and nutritionists use DEXA scans for body composition. They call it the gold standard method for measuring body composition. It will be really interesting to see how close the results are

I saw your posters at the gym. Would be very interesting to try, but your requesting BMI over 30. That is quite big if your lean (or short).

my BMI is only 27, lol.

Will there be a questionare with the test asking about creatine suplementation or steroid use?
