Maybe it's 'cos Delayed Uptake Muscle Pain doesn't sound nice either, and the abbreviation for "Oh my god I just woke up after a big workout and everything really really really hurts" was too long and not "medical-sounding" enough?

its the sore you get the next day.... instead of the (burning) sore you get during a high rep set or the oh i tore something sore...

just slightly more descriptive then i got sore. which could mean any of the above three.
