Full Squats

Recommended Posts

From the Get Strength website:

The full squat, with the top of the thigh below parallel with the floor, is a key exercise for improving sports performance. But what if you don’t like full squats?

Then you have 4 options. They are: 4a. become someone who embraces full squats, 4b. go to the Big House of Mirrors and have a good long hard look at yourself, 4c. Invite Carson and QE blokes over for a make-over or 4d. glue your toilet seat down.

Bloody Brilliant, I love it \:D/

full squats are overated...

Sounds like ego bs to me.

very few people have the flexability not to go into anterior pelvic tilt during a full squat. Which leads to a rounded lower back placing large stress on the vertebrae.

Correctly performed full squats unfuck the fuckups you have from squatting wrong. I do agree about the flexibility thing im in that same boat.

You know now that I'm getting back in the swing of training people in person again, it's surprising me how many people I'm seeing that just don't have the flexibility to do even a half squat without some trouble.

It's no surprise that you end up with so many knee-benders at your average gym, given that it's not always an intuitive movement and a lot of folks seem to have flexibility issues that limit them. Seems like a fair few trainers either don't know how to fix that, or don't care because they're teaching the knee-bend up-on-toes style, too.

I'm thinking about putting on a squatting clinic at some point, just to spend a couple of hours going over the basics and getting people some hands-on experience learning and troubleshooting.

Your taking the piss right?

Its not a case of flexability is a case of being a giant pussy. For big strong legs you do big strong squats. Doing a half squats is and blaming flexability actually means im to weak to do real squats, end of story.

Your taking it in the right direction P-Man and I agree with you on putting on a squatting clinic for those wanting to take the time to understand the basics etc

Since training under supervision with my trainer, my previous squatting experience has been trained outta me and nothing beats getting out 6 reps atgs at 150kgs. this is my 3rd week training with my trainer.

:pfft: and out come the egos.

Full squats are for men end of story. Only ppl who argue otherwise are those who can't do them or don't want to do them as they would have to use bitch weights.

I preform full squats...

and I argue otherwise...

Just because they are good for me doesnt mean they are good for everyone.

haha, it's surprising how quick you'll see improvements once you get the right instruction. In just the last week I've had two guys come in that were literally too stiff to squat down with their own bodyweight. A little mobility work for the hips and ankles along with some box squats, and I've had them both squatting to acceptable depth within a single session.

It'll take more time than that to nail down good form and to really break in the flexibility to do a "true" full squat (if that ever happens, I think ohjoshua's right about a lot of people having issues with that), but it's good progress for people that have basically never squatted before.

its been funny reading some of the responses say your a pussy if you dont do full squats.

Ultimatley I agree that most people should be able to preform a full squat. If our toliets were holes in the ground we would all be able to PROPERLY preform a full squat.

I have been doing some training with Andy a PT at Les Mills in the City - his back ground is in Olympic Lifting - my squats are coming along having never really given them much attention in the past given my history with a bad back and poor flexablity - no trouble so far - fingers crossed.

you have no idea what you are talking about. A full squat is better than a half squat. If you cant do full squats go do a spin class.

Its better to go through 40 minutes of sheer hell than going 7 days of hell thinking about how you`ve wasted yet another leg workout.

Deep Squats = Big Ass!

Which is why I don't do deep squats right now. I do more than bounce the bar a couple of inches (that's not a squat!) but I stop before my glutes take over the lift. The sad fact is that my arse grows twice as fast as my quads do, and it doesn't need any extra encouragement. :P

 I have that problem too  Though I do try to squat as deep as I can. Not below parallel, but to parallel (except for my heaviest weight of the day which I normally just manage one or two to parallel and the rest partial).
