Not my gym, so didn't have my custom box (which I set up on an angle) so I just stuck a bench there. The walkout was a bit over the top!

Oh ok, sweet :) Sorry, it came to mind because I've been told to stop moving around so much after unracking the bar

Good advice. Squats should really be a 2 & 1/2 step set up ideally.... think I did about 20 & 1/2!!!

I worked out at Aspyre last year before Xmas on holiday, seemed like a cool gym (a bit basic) but had a lot of stick figures with their shirts off

Hope you didn't have to put up with that shit too man

LOL - they tend to disperse when I take all the 20's and leave only nickels & dimes for the kiddies! :pfft:

I don't train there that often but there's a crew of good young guys in there, yesterday I noticed the annual summer drift had begun with lots of newbies pumpin biceps in singlets.....

No more real training before NZSM, have to say I'm very happy with my build up despite the injuries (quad tend tear, supinator/biceps tear) earlier in the year. In the last 7 weeks I've had 20+ PR's so can't complain!

Time for rest & relaxation now before rock & roll on Saturday!!

first off good luck for the comp!

Just wanted to ask a question regarding peaking from reading your last post. Have you ever lifted all the way up to a competition with near maximal lifts? maybe all the way up to the night before or the morning of? And if so, how do you compare it to light lifting or complete rest the last few days?

Cheers

I always cycle down, mainly volume but also weight in the last week (although Monday I did a little more than I usually would due to a few low vol days earlier). Two weeks out I usually cut volume (less assistance work, less sets) & in the last week its very low volume, low weight & stretching just to avoid seizing up!

I'd imagine it'd be very tough to do a strongman comp after training sessions (like we do for implement work during our build ups). You need to be somewhat fresh to go all out, thats why the second day of a 2 day comp is always hard work!!

Big Nate! good luck, i wont be competing but ill be watching. at least now u will have a shot at the title eh with me out the picture lol... playn up! cu sunday bro.

Catch up then bro!

tru that..only reason i was asking is to get an idea of the role of cns in comps. Ive been reading how some people lift with near maximum loads all the way til comps with the intent of "priming" the cns for the meet, albeit less volume, but they were either PL or Oly competitors. I guess because strongman requires more volume and conditioning on comp day it would only lead to frying it lol

thanks for your reply.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well I thought I'd better get my act together and get my journal back on track! NZSM was best described as one of those days! Felt lethargic & unmotivated, but had no real reason to be. Although its fair to say you create your own luck it was just one of those times nothing seemed to go my way. In past years I would've been highly pissed off but having seen others have those days (and remembering having them myself in PLing days) I just shrugged it off and put it down to experience.

Lowlights of my day included throwing the WFH so inaccurately I recorded the lowest throw I have in years! A misloaded Log Press, then missing the reloaded weight to record my worst log press in over a decade! Then to top it off I dropped the Herc Hold after only 50ish or less seconds when I tore two callouses on my left hand! (see pic attached)

Stone were average at best. The anvil went well at around 70 metres but I managed two massive haematomas on each side of my waist! (see pic on the day). These bad boys were the swollen the size of a grapefruit & a small orange! The bruising eventually covered my whole waist, and after 18 days or so has almost gone although hard lumps remain under the skin!!

So less than memorable, but time to move on!!

Worth taking this opportunity to thank my sponsors http://www.bodybuilding.co.nz & EatWell Sports & Health Dietitian for their ongoing support. Also to work for the $500 contribution towards accomodation at NZSM.

Also all those that supported me last year, my girl & my wonderful children, Dave Smith, Stevie Mega, Nickoli, Jono, Reuben, Warren & the Powerhouse crew, Craig & the ESB crew, all those that provided advice throughout the year (you know who you are!!).

It's a selfish individual sport but ya cant do it without the support of others! :pfft:

Moving right along.....

The brains behind ESB has given me some inspiration to run a 2 day per week Upper/Lower split based loosely on his Powerbuilding philosophy, that will fit with the BJJ rolling sessions I am doing twice weekly.

With the extra recovery time I'm hoping to make strength gains while getting fitter & leaner with the BJJ sessions. Time will tell.

I have been invited to do a SM event in February, so in late January I will reassess my training, although I am enjoying the BJJ so much I may end up focusing on that!?! Don't want to overthink it at this stage though!

New name for Journal needed? Any ideas?!

Nice bro, yeah those were some pretty sore looking injuries on the day! Now whenever I feel a twinge in a callous I remind myself of what yours looked like and carry on :pfft:

Ideas for journal name:

Nate's Cutting Journal

Nate Goes Brazilian (JJ)

Nate's Injury Chronicles

  (just kiddin'!)

Good luck bro, look forward to following how you get on. BJJ is something I've considered in the past, but haven't had the motivation to pick it up yet, so I'm keen to see how you get on with the workload
