Just watched the new Branch Warren dvd (his 2009 O training) and it bought questions to mind.

The guy trains very explosively and it obviously works well for him, being number 2, and arguably coulda been 1.

Putting aside the loose and sometimes frightening way he goes to work ...

Explosive training vs the slow deliberate super good form type with no momentum:

Is it just a choice? or does lifting slow and steady run out of results at some point?

The momentum of the explosive style lets you go heavier, does it work on different fibres and enhance (so train both ways for best gains?)

Im kinda assuming mix it up, just like to know what other people have found.

And by explosive I mean still in control with reasonable form, not crazy injury inducing swings.

Man that's a pretty complex question, and the only simple answer is "it depends".

Realistically there's a time and a place for all kinds of tempos, depending on the exercise, depending on what you've been doing, what you're trying to achieve...there's no instant right or wrong answer.

If you want a rule of thumb, I'd lean towards doing your key lifts with "explosive" form - which basically means, not intentionally slowing them down and always pushing with maximum effort - and then using the slow/controlled stuff on assistance work.

If you watch any of the pros train you will see that they nearly all train this way. By performing the exercises as explosively as possible you are activating alot more fast twitch muscle fibres. Pros know this and this is why they train this way. Fast twitch muscle fibres are the ones that are going to grow and become sronger in response to your training (slow twitch fibres can grow as well but no where near to the same extent).

So yes for the majority of your training you should employ the same tempo the pros do for maximum results. But as you have rightly noted there is a time for slow training as well, and you should mix it up as you said.

:nod: Definitly agree, explosive most of the time , in a nutshell explosive lifting causes you to give maximum effort to each rep not just the last one!

However you must 1st learn how to lift safely with good form and once you've developed a good feel for the movement and your body then you can loosen things up a bit and go super explosive.
