Heh, feel sorry for the guy more than anything. Was about to get up and ask if he wanted a bit of help/advice, but not confident I could do so without coming across as a jerk (nor can I be sure how he'd take it - I've been on the receiving end a couple of times so know how it can be! :-s ). I tried to make my bench look as clean as possible in between his sets (saw him watching my setup once or twice - maybe he was thinking the same of my form? :pfft:) but it didn't seem to have any affect.

Showed my bro the video and he was wondering how it was possible to be that far off the chest  Maybe he isn't doing bench press? Just... lockouts maybe? Although he has been doing the same thing each time I've seen him on the bench... Ah well.

Well I don't mean to put the guy down, but think of a 19 year old David Spade and that'll be about the body type of this guy :shifty: Weight is 60-70kg (was just 60 today) for anything from 4 to 10 reps. I guess I'm trying to say I find it unlikely he was really doing lockouts :? But hey, I could be wrong...

I think next time I may just ask if he needs a hand, probably a bit stink of me to sit here bagging the guy without seeing what he's up to

(Although I think it evens out because he doesn't put his weights away :x :pfft:)

lol dude wtf!! :pfft: recording other people at the gym?!!?

Ha, I know it's dodgy as, but I hate telling the shallow bencher story and having people go "Oh yeah I see that all the time".. and then proceeding to tell their story. I just can't stress enough that these are the worst shallow presses I've yet seen! It's not the old inch or two away from the chest, it is quite literally a slight bend of the elbows and then back up.

Haha, so I am a little ashamed of my sneakiness, and there is no real way to justify this... but I needed it to back up my story in lieu of no training partner to verify  Everyone loves a good video to verify stories anyway :pfft:

Anyway, enough talk of this guy, I will endeavour to help him (or at least have a chat) next time I see him going at the bench... at least partially to ease my guilt of recording the fella for my storytelling purposes 8)

You normally go around 1pm-ish eh? Is he normally there around that time? Maybe I'll do a few later sessions on chest days

Heh yep, would've been between 1 and 2. I'm feeling a bit guilty about mentioning this now haha, poor guy. I've got one more mate to verify the story to and then I'm ridding myself of the evidence on my phone, my poor conscience can't take it :? :pfft:

[TFB checks the date, whew, wasn't me, I did bench yesterday  !] - but yes, I can imagine how that goes... nice to see the bodyweight fronts are nearly upon you. Keep that up!

Cheers TFB. I think I did hit above bodyweight pre-injuries, but would definitely be nice to get back up there

i used to give people a heads up if I saw them doing the wrong technique, but got the cold shoulder a couple of times (at least) so decided it's best to leave it. I don't know about your gym but at mine I swear least 80% of people have terrible technique

RE benching, I envy the guys who have really short arms so their movement is only small  . some guys only have to move a few inches

Heh yep, I'm listed as 6 but I'm not sure if I'm playing there or 7.

We'll see how it goes, we're improving week to week, gave Poneke a bit of a fright last week! Last home game for the round... hopefully it'll pick us up a bit.

But yeah catch ya on the field :horseshit:

Heh, we'll see! Always nice to give a few temporary tats out to those that find themselves on the wrong part of the ruck

Whether that is NZMM or not we shall see in the aftermath :pfft:

NZMM - staying for a beer after the game?

Sooo we won't be talking about the weekend's result v NZMM in this thread  Wasn't quite sure which one he was anyways... heh. Ah well, next time.

08/06/10

94.4 today! Ouch, that'll be the result of 2 family birthdays + a bit of boozing on Saturday night, and no activity on top of it all which has all added up to +2kg to bodyweight. Ah well, starting boxing up again tomorrow for some extra cardio, have been slack on the cardio front since my injuries have healed, time to get serious with that once again.

Deload-ish day today (still heavy weight, but chopped volume down).

  • Squats
    Bar/technique/stretching
    5 x 60kg
    3 x 100kg
    3 x 110kg
    2 x 120kg
    5 x 125kg
  • Bench
    Bar/technique
    5 x 60kg
    3 x 100kg
    3 x 110kg
    3 x 120kg
  • Power Cleans
    5 x bar (hang-cleans)
    3 x 60kg
    3 x 70kg
    3 x 75kg
  • Stretching/core etc
    Usual bollocks

Comments

  • Squats felt good, probably went a bit hard on the volume here but didn't want to waste the good vibes. Was getting lower than I have been on most reps, but the last few @ 125 were to parallel or just below as I've been doing lately.
  • Bench was ok, videod one set @110 (man, I must post some of these up at some point), was interesting to see how I looked on the bench as I've never seen before - my arch is way bigger than I thought! But otherwise it looked steadier than I felt it was... Will be interesting to see what you fullas think (if I ever get around to posting it ). Last set @ 120 touched on the first rep but was a bloody grind, the last two reps I didn't touch - which I think was because I felt I was pushing more than I could handle in this set. Disappointed with that, bench didn't feel there today :x
  • Power cleans felt very good, pity it was a deload session, could've gone heavier + more reps. Felt like the hang cleans were a good lead-in, should do that more often.
  • Usual stretches etc, missed out the Swiss ball stuff though as was pushing time a bit.

Apart from the bodyweight it was a good session, will probably go in for some assistance exes tomorrow. Boxing tomorrow night too, should be interesting first night back for a few months!

The coaches actually did the switch a roo on me the morning of the game. Got a call to say one of the guys injury was better so I'd be with the senior 1's instead

Its been quite a common theme this year. Another popular one is changing the backline positions on the day of the game..... 'you practiced at 2nd 5 all week but you can play on the wing today'

Ah well might see you in the Hard luck cup....

Oh really? Gutted! A couple of the wingers had a bit of size about 'em so I thought they may have been you... maybe in Hardham then

post the vid! your bench press not the other guys'....

Arrrgh, will give it a shot tonight, putting off getting grilled on form :pfft:

  • I saw the team physio about my shoulder injury, and he reckons it is related to the shoulder slouch - he is saying that because of where the pain is located (front/top), it seems my shoulder may be pinching a nerve (the shoulder prob has been around for a couple of seasons). His solution (or part of it) was to strengthen the back part of the shoulder to bring it back off what he thinks is being pinched. So this is, basically, another rehab exercise for me due to poor posture :( Weight was light just to make sure I was getting the right area.
  • Rear DB raises, kinda same reason for doing these as above, strengthening the rear of the shoulder.
  • Felt like these to strengthen the recently healed injuries (lower back/rear leg etc). Were a bit of a struggle balance-wise, mainly because my ankle was a bit sore from contact in training last night, but otherwise they were good. Could definitely feel the work.
  • I'm not sure if this is the proper name for them, but basically not a straight in front lunge, and not a lunge to the side... in the middle of the two :P
  • Did some pullups as I hadn't done any for a while, and wanted to see where they were at. 3 x 5 at bodyweight weren't too bad, but definitely not where they used to be.

Cripes, is there meant to be that much arch in the back? I think I've always had the majority of my spine in contact with the bench.

(Honest question - I'm still a noob with weights!)

I didn't think I had that much of an arch until I saw the video! I know it is good to have some arch, but whether or not I've got too much I'm not sure  I'll leave that for those more experienced/in the know than I to gaze over. But looking back, I guess ever since I've been emphasizing the shoulder tightness and driving the traps into the bench (at least half a year now), that arch appears to have increased alongside the other technique adjustments... so I dunno... Maybe the angle from the floor looking up at the bench makes it look worse than it actually is?

I should also add a disclaimer that my bench was feeling a bit off that day, and that may have carried over into form :shifty: :pfft: Although the form/setup etc didn't feel any different, the weight at this and the following set was a bit more of a grind than I've been having recently at these weights.

I'm fairly sure that's the same kind of arch Rose taught me when we had our bench press session a while back. I was completely amazed as I had no idea you were meant to have an arch at all, nevermind such a big one.

Thanks CC, that reassures me a tad :)

Mean train, Mean vid, Mean arch!

Cheers mate, any tips big fulla?

10/06/10

Late 92s again today, a bit of DOMS from yesterdays boxing/assistance exes, so was a tad sore. Carrying on with the deload theme today.

  • Squats
    Bar/stretches
    5 x 60kg
    3 x 100kg
    3 x 110kg
    3 x 120kg
  • Deads
    5 x 60kg
    3 x 100kg
    3 x 120kg
    3 x 140kg
  • OHP
    Bar warmups
    3 x 60kg
    3 x 70kg
    3 x 80kg
  • Stretches/Core
    3 x 12 Hyperextensions
    3 x 10 Dislocations
    Stretching etc

Comments

  • Squats felt good, fiddled with a slighty wider grip and stance today (not too much) but that seemed to put a little more pressure on my lower back so not sure if I'll stick with that. Powerbase felt pretty good though. Was nice to experiment a little.
  • Deads were a bit of a grind, not because the weight was heavy but because the arms/back were a bit sore from yesterdays train and boxing session.
  • OHP sucked, felt very lazy on it. Strict form on the first set but the last two were major push pressing  All good though, I feel the practical use of the push pressing coming through really well in my lineout lifts, we're throwing our locks up real easy
  • Normal stretches, but no swiss ball or foam roller work, gave them a rest today. Swapped some hypers in for the usual Supermans.

Twisted my knee at training tonight when a bit of an overzealous reserve rushed out of the line in an opposed team run to dive at me, so I got the ball at the same time as him, twisted around a bit as he lifted one of my legs and then he landed on the one that was twisting :x Very annoying. Got the hot pins 'n needles in it not long after it happened, it's a bit iffy when putting too much weight on it, icing it as I type. Fingers crossed it pulls up ok for the weekend, should have a better idea when I wake up tomorrow.

I know what ya mean dude, I was originally told by a PT to keep my back flat, and even used a box under my feet to prevent any arch. It's only recently that I've started working on an arch, and that was only after a physio started me working on setting my scapulae and driving them back into the bench.
