Tips on some chunky abs????

Chunky abs? Meaning you have abs but want to make them bigger?

Im by no means an expert on this... but I work my abs once a week (from what I've learnt, you do indirect ab work through working other body parts as well) and this pretty much sets up a good foundation.

My abs pop out (being Xmas/holiday season, they're pretty shy at the moment :pfft: ) when my bodyfat drops. So my advice would be to sort out your diet (and this takes a WHILE, trust me) and your abs will start to show

I dunno if thats wot you were after?

^ I agree. :)

I train abs just like any other muscle. Some people do 200 crunches every day, but I can't see any point to that. Do them with weights, and do 10-12 reps to failure. Do them once or twice a week (but avoid doing them before legs, since as Lazyone says, they'll be needed as stabiliser muscles here).

That will build up the size of the abs, but to get the cuts separating them, you need to have a low body fat.

Hmmm, maybe I need some advice on abs too. I understood abs could be trained at least twice a week or even every second day because they recover quicker. I had been really slack with them recently and noticed it when doing squats, deadlifts etc. So I have just started working them every second day, is this too often, should I drop back to twice weekly???

Example of what i do alternately on every second day would be

workout one

- 4 sets of 30 hanging raises, twisting (hoping to build back up to weighted one like I used to do

- 3 sets of 20 crunches, holding plate

- 3 sets of 20 leg raises (straight legs)

workout two

- 4 sets of 50 crunches followed by 60 ab cycles

Any comments??

Nancy - to be honest, I don't know how much volume is ideal. Like everything else in this game, I suspect it depends on who you talk to! My own gut instinct, though, is that it could be too much. As you say, abs also get worked in a lot of other exercises anyway.

Ultimately, though, the only person who can know if you're overtraining is you. Have a play around with different volume, and see what happens. I'd love to know what you find, so do report back. :)
