Useless slacker training partner snapped my belt today pulling only about 120kg.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuck got no money but need a new one

Did some benching today, went OK but not sensational. Hoping to nail 100kg by September. Will start practicing 'paused' benching soon in case I do end up having a stab at the CBC 3-lift.

cool bro, me and you both wanting the hundy, cept ive got an extra 50% b.w

Coast got rimmed today bro :pfft: Race you to hundy- I'm stuck on 90 (touch and go) at the mo but I have a feeling that's about to change 8)

Ewww exams.. What're you studying? And how did it go?

Hey poos, studying journalism. Exams went about as well as expected (in other words, shit  )

can't find that belt anyway lol, its sumwhere tho... sorta lost it cos I couldnt fit in it

Allgoods bro...you fatty haha! :pfft: I tried my new belt for the first time today but I found out that its actually a BBing belt not a PLing one.

Stepped into an actual gym for the first time in my life today...what better place to be deflowered than Coast Barbell? :pfft:

Met Steak and Barbelle, and got some invaluable advice on squat and bench technique which I'm very grateful for.

Steak is even bigger when you meet him in person... Wouldn't want to run into him in a dark alley :pfft:

Turns out I have been doing squats and bench wrong this whole time, but in a way I expected as much. They are much more technical than I had thought. Wish I had made the mission across to the coast earlier!

Squats

Started with the bar, learning to sit the hips back, keep the S shape in the spine and get the shins near vertical.

Then added a box to get an idea of depth.

Put on a plate each side and did a few sets.

Then ended up with 75kg, which has never felt so heavy before haha. Completely humbling to learn the whole movement afresh.

Same story with Bench

Damo took me through correct setup with the bar.

Then added some weight up to 50kg. Just over half my max and I was sweating and panting like a mofo. Bench is much more of a full body, max effort exercise than I realised.

Then did some band good mornings, super light DB flies to flush the blood.

Finally Damo showed me the foam rollers and the "violator" :pfft: which were fucking painful, but felt quite good at the same time.

Mint atmosphere at Coast and will have to make the trip again when I can afford the petrol.

Nice work on the deadlifts. I just saw that you have hit 160. I tried for 165 today, got it to about knee level.

Good one dude, I'll have to work extra hard to keep up!

Do it, its a lot different to watching internet videos and browsing the forums haha.

Keep at it mate...just go through the motions for each lift in your head and you'll get there in no time...and hey we all had to start somewhere. You picked it up pretty easily from what I saw :) .

Thanks Barbelle. I have written down a checklist of things to remember for each lift. Hopefully it will become muscle memory soon

You planning on getting in a suit?

No, I will never be a competitive lifter, its just a casual/fun hobby. Gear doesn't appeal to me. But I would like to lift a bit more weight, hence the change from high bar BBer stylee :)

Meh, I think that's an overdone comparison. You lift the most weight with the style that fits your body. PL style has given me several muscle tears and never winds up any stronger than my high-bar. There's no harm trying it out, and it might actually suit you better, but I don't know if I'd go as far to say you're squatting "wrong" if you're not aiming for a style that's optimized for suited & wrapped lifters.

I'm really reaching the conclusion that over-analyzing form, and worse trying to force yourself into an unnatural style, does more harm than good. Get tight, hit depth -- anything else is nitpicking.

But good on ya for making the attempt, lots of folks would just grind away forever and never try anything different to see.

Good point Pman and thanks for your input. To clarify a little further, I probably wasn't even doing highbar squats correctly. Steak described some of them at 50% of max as 'survival squats' ie just muscling the squat up whatever way possible. Sometimes I do really bad rounded back genuflects on the way up etc. So I'm pretty keen to give squatting a go the 'proper' way and see where it takes me!
