Anyway back to the point- thanks heaps for that TFB, good to know theres at least a chicken salad option if i get desperate for more than just peanuts and coke zero.

Never flown Delta, with good reason :-))

Dare i ask why you don't fly Delta, or do i not wanna know? :-s

Um.... crap. I haven't done an entry since Thursday (well wednesday properly) and my memory is kinda shot right now :clubbed:

Saturdays Training: Back-Triceps - FAIL!

When i arrived the staff said "oh we're closing 2hrs earlier today, so you got 40 mins". I said "um why, and where are the signs saying that?" ....silence. :naughty: :^o  Not.Freakin.good.enough.

• Cardio: 30 mins cross training

• Db Bent over rows 20 kg 15x5

• Lat Pulldowns 12x2 40kg

• Negative Wide-grip pullups x4

• Tri Extensions 12.5lg 15x3

Sundays Training:Cardio

• Few hours Hill walk/run/climb

Sundays Diet

M1: 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup milk

M2: chicken salad, coffee

M3: 30g jerky, 1/2 banana

M4: kidney beans, veges, 1/2 avocado

M5: tea, 1/2 protein bar

I got no hope in hell of remembering my diet for sat and fri but i know it wasn't bad. Bit of a fail weekend workout wise though but can't be helped, too much to do, so little time.

Also wanted to ask: why would measurements noteably go down a number of cm's (i.e waist, hips) but weight goes up? (i.e me).

The one reason I can think of is the good one - lean muscle going up, bodyfat going down! In short, your diet and exercise routine are in a place for your metabolism that encourages building of dense muscular tissue and the consumption of lighter, bulkier bodyfat.

For me, Delta always seemed a good notch or two below United (and US Airways, better known as US Scareways!) - but some of that was down to when I was logging a lot of miles.

Delta's hubs (regional transit centres) were inconvenient for me personally, their on-time record sucked (i.e. they were often late), they lost bags more than the others and their equipment was dodgy-looking - tired and ill-maintained, at least in the passenger cabin.

My wife flew one sector with them in a probably 30-year-old Boeing 727 (which are so old even the RNZAF's stopped using them) which had the front half of the cabin in one decor, and the back half in another... as if they'd run out of money to finish the job half way through!.

To be fair to them, they were in "Chapter 11" (trading their way out of bankruptcy) at the time, just like most of the US carriers, and I've not flown them recently.

The only advice I'd have is 'keep a change of clothes in your cabin bag' against your luggage taking 24 hours to catch up with you, and you'll be fine!

But you will probably be stunned at how much people try to fit into the overhead lockers...those lockers hold two wheelie-cabin-bags per row, but there are three seats per row, so someone misses out!

or just bring protein bars with you when you fly in the states plus it will be more healthy then some high carb and high fat crap

My carry-on bag is already stocked with them :D And jerky.

Eeekk... okay, good advice! I hadn't even thought about doing that. At least only one of my flights with Delta, the with with US Scareways.... yay.. :?

 ......Really? So I'm doing everything right, yet my initial goal of losing weight is unachieveable if keep doing what i'm doing? :-s Confusing....

No, it's not confusing, you've just got the wrong goal

Seriously, relying on bodyweight numbers for goals will do your head in. Bodyweight is just a number, honest!

If all else is equal, and your total body weight (the sum of lean muscle mass and body fat) has stayed the same, but centimetres have come off all your vital dimensions, then clearly you've added dense muscle tissue, and driven your % bodyfat down, or dumped a lot of water (which can happen too).

I can stand next to my brother - same height, same parents/genetics, and yet I will have a different "ideal" weight to him - I'm much broader across the shoulders and have a heavier skeleton. Yet, if I were to aspire to hit his weight, I would have to shed not only every shred of bodyfat, but muscle mass as well. What's right for me is what's right for me... and so your goals should be what's right for you.... and that can be determined by factors other than total weight.

Maybe it's time to use the trip to define new goals for what you want to achieve?

:pfft: :pfft: :pfft: it could all end badly with high quality NZ jerky bars thrown in the bin.

Uh oh, hmmm...I'll just make sure i scoff them all before i reach the US. Could look a little suspicious....

Very true TFB, good point. I have always been quite solid i suppose, when i compare myself to my waif (some skinny-fat) friends, so i never expect to be tiny and maybe my initial "goal weight" is actually not able to be achieved if i want to retain muscle tone as well. To be honest i felt alot smaller (and weighed a lot less) when i was doing hardcore running 7-8km a day 6 days a week, but i felt far less toned overall and not as healthy as i do now. So maybe thats the trade off of lifting weights...... tiny or toned... hmmm... maybe i'll try and find a perfect balance.

Maybe it's time to use the trip to define new goals for what you want to achieve?

 I shall indeed spend the next few weeks pondering and reflecting on the past year of training. It sure has been an interesting one.

Man i have been ultra slack in my journaling efforts lately, but i can blame that on the million things that have had to be done before i go tomorrow. I can finally breathe a sigh of relief now, except for the fact that i've got myself sick. Somehow I've managed to fit in workouts though.

Anyway, i'm off tommorow so.... if i don't get time to update it with my last workout then ... bye bye journal. I shall miss you dearly. :( I'll try make some updates in the next few months so it doesn't completely die though, and to let you know if i've turned into a big fat american slob.

Thank you for all your contributions to my journal in the past few months, you got no idea how much i appreciate the wealth of wisdom on nzbb.

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and new years. Look after yourselves. Feliz navidad!

Allo allo again Journal... Just thought i would pop in and make sure it hadn't disappeared/died in my absense. I hope none of you people have either.

I seem to have survived the onslaught of artificial processed crap that is american food for the past month or so, but truly miss NZ's quality fresh produce and I don't think anything could of prepared me for how badly most americans eat. Even chicken doesn't taste half as good here, let alone the milk. Although i love how liquid egg whites are readily available. About time NZ adopted that. At the moment i'm in the southern states and they are not kidding when they say everything is fried. Avoiding carbs has become an ongoing mission when before and with every meal they have "biscuits" with honey or jam or lard (which are what we call scones, just lighter) and everything is battered in some way or form. Take last night for example - I attempted to order the healthiest thing on the menu including what i thought were "healthy sides", such as green beans ( I thought i couldn't go wrong with the beans) but alas i soon discovered they were cooked in bacon fat....Like everything else. Deep fried oreo's/cheeseburgers/butter/gherkins anyone? The "salads" are primarily bacon peices, cheeder cheese and deep fried crutons, with some manky iceberg lettace thrown in.

Maintaining any level of fitness is an ongoing battle. I was in Iowa, where it was -20 degrees celcius or worse 24/7. If running in those temperatures didn't kill me, the meters of snow and ice would have. I managed to go to a gym twice while i was there, and that was definutly an experience - and make ours look like piddly amatures - but the rest of the time i just had to try and get access to a treadmill. Now i'm in North Carolina doing my internship and can't hire a car (due to my age) and no public transport is available in my area so there is no way i can join a gym while im here. That leaves running - which is rather dangerous around these parts (this town has a frightening crime rate) particually when its dark - which is the only time i'm not working and have the opportunity to run. So yes, you can see my quandry. But...I am doing my best in the circumstnaces and trying not to let it get to me. :?

Oh and just on a side note coz i have to get this off my chest - America complains about their childhood obesity problem yet their primary schools serve the kids 'corn dogs' and 'french fries" and "hot dogs" for lunch everyday? WTF!?!?!?  This was at a PRIVATE school too, so i thought the quality would've been slightly better than the public schools. Dumb Dumb dumb DUMB!

Anyway, Happy New Year Everyone, I hope you've had a great start to the year and your trainings all on track for 2010. :D

Yay Emmzies... you ARE alive after all... I guess Iowa in Winter was a shock, even to someone from Christchurch heheh ??

I just spend a week in the mid-Atlantic states, I swear I have never seen so much saturated fat and high-fructose corn syrup in my life! As for "biscuits" - instant artery death, in one stodgy lump - ick!

But I'm on my way home now and I will probably stop at New World on the way home from the airport and inhale some fresh veggies and grass-fed beef!

Hang in there, you won't regress as far as you fear, and you'll soon recover once back home.

I know what you mean about having to eat the food over here after being spoilt with quality food in NZ. Even after 4 years over here I still cant stomach most of what is on offer in restaurants, vegetables and fruit don't even taste how they should. When I eat out now I ask for eggs on toast or if I go to IHOP sirloin tips and eggs, I trade out the pancakes for toast and tell them no hashbrowns.

What part of NC are you in?

The south west is depressing right now. Whole streets owned by the banks, people strip everything out inc the toilet before they leave.

Been 5 times and dont want to go back ever, NZ is superior in many ways IMO. Anyone want to buy my green card and passport? :pfft:

Totally agree with you there, as would anyone who has ever spent some decent time in the South. It is really sad seeing so many abandoned buildings and business's that have failed. NZ has no freakin clue when they complain about how much of an impact the recession has had on NZ when you compare it to here, in combination with the whole housing crises. The law firm i'm working for has had to like quadruple their foreclosure department, its mind boggling when you see the effect its having on people.

Welcome to my country!

Ahh....thanks... can i go home now? :shifty:

Fayetteville, its like 40 mins from the state capital Raleigh and not far from the state border i guess.

Ha yeah eating out here is just soooo much fun... not. The people i was staying with in Iowa ate out like 80% of the time, as did all their friends, and i was SOOO over it. Eekkk IHOP is bad bad bad news. In fact i don't think there are any decent breakfast restaurants with wholesome meals. TFB's right, You just can never escape that saturated fat, refined carbs and High Fructose Corn Syrup, no matter what you do...

Yay Emmzies... you ARE alive after all... I guess Iowa in Winter was a shock, even to someone from Christchurch heheh ??

Yes Iowa was a shock alright, and i shall never return. I advise you all to stay away from that useless state. Ha and i thought Chch winters were bad.... oh how naieve was i.

I would have to agree with you there, I am still here because my wife has to stay in Gwinnett county until her kids are over 18. We are counting down the years. I get to deliver to and sleep in amongst many of those areas with abandoned homes and businesses. Very gloomy.

Eeek, poor Emmzies  Ummm, might I suggest trying to find a skipping rope? Now's the time! You can do it anywhere, anytime! Basement, gargre, back porch... You can also mimic some resistance exercises with it using bodyweight. Oh and insert comment here re walking lunges, press ups, single leg squats, yadda yadda yadda. Yay for avoiding diabetes! You're doing splendid under the circumstances Miss. Don't cave! Come back to us healthy

Allo allo long lost journal....i'm back (for now) :D

I guess in respect for my past journal efforts i should stop procrastinating and be somewhat accountable for the past 3 months, which consisted of of no proper training thanks to constant travel/lack of viable exercise options, which- as i feared - has turned me into a fat weak slob. I know i should start on the road to recovery sometime soon before it gets beyond repair, i'm just not sure whether i simply start up my old routine or start afresh.

Having this extended break from training did give me a good opportunity to reflect on how semi-obbsessive i had been getting in terms of letting the gymming take over my life (and i realize now training 10 days in a row for 1.5 hrs is NOT conducive to my health and wellbeing  ), so I am determined to not let it get to that point this year. I also know how addictive it is, so once i start it up again i'm not too sure how i will retain this healthy perception.... so if you guys could help me out with that it would be greatly appreciated. I give you full permission to abuse me as much as you like if i start to loose rationality and forget to give myself rest days for weeks on end. :naughty:

Come back to us healthy
Fail with a capital F i'm afraid Rose. :(
You think IHOP's bad? Roll up to a Waffle House sometime between 1am and 4am.
Just to let you know, 1 day after you told me to do that, somehow i ended up at a Wafflehouse at 2am and i survived to tell the tale. Luckily i did have a more than adequate body guard with me though. Oh how i will not miss small town america...

So, i missed any drama on here? Any Cokebottle copycats popped up? Whats new? I feel very out of the loop all of a sudden....
