Exactly  I'm not too scared of building muscles. I have the biggest arms I ever had at the moment and I havn't been worried about it. But I'm kinda ready for them to stop growing lol. Maybe a cut??

I guess there probably does come a point where i should stop increasing the weights....hmmm.... good point. :?

Ooo I have wondered this also?? For girls who don't wana go the next step into 'bodybuilding' is there a point where you should stop increasing them?? Then what?? :-s

It's entirely relative. You can gain a surprising amount of strength without adding a ton of mass if you just keep the working volume low (that is to say, very low reps and only a handful of total sets per muscle group).

My wife as one example has gotten fairly strong without adding a ton of muscle in the process. She's grown of course, but not to a huge degree. Some growth is unavoidable as you get stronger, but it's not as clear cut as "add 30kg to lift ---> grow 5kg of muscle"

What you'll tend to notice on most people, regardless of gender, is that weight training moves you from being totally untrained to a new equilibrium of muscle mass - which is just the beginner gains everyone sees - and from there you really have to work hard for years (wrt training + diet both) to see any further gains.

Strength, on the other hand, seems to be much more linear in how it progresses, though it still has its own ups and downs. Obviously there will be a limit to how much any given amount of muscle can lift, too, and honestly I'd look at that as limiting your strength gains, rather than thinking of it as "when should I stop adding weight to my lifts".

You'll plateau in strength long before you reach a point of crazy muscle mass, in other words.

That said, it all boils down to what you're after. For the girls that just "want to tone up" or whatever, I generally suggest not doing much of anything weight-wise. Generally speaking I've found that most women that lift intelligently and keep an eye on their diets end up pleased with the results and don't totally hulk out, though.

 Some more great words of wisdom there, thanks :) I dont think i'm going to really worry as such, like you said, its not exactly easy for a girl to 'hulk up'. Emmzies are you going for the body building look now?

NO! Why?.....Am i heading that way? Oh crap.... stupid weights training addiction. Its all your fault people...

We want pics :protest:

:pfft: You really don't, trust me.

no no your not heading that way. but reading journal, just bought it to my attention :shifty: KUTGW

And yes We want pics!!!!!! \:D/

You should throw up some pics! I was a bit nervous about it at first but its really good to get advice/critique from other experienced people on the site. You don't exactly have to be wearing a bikini either, and the advice you get may be helpful to other members with the same stats/goals as you etc.

hahaha no I'm just messing with you.

I've been a trainer in the past and may get back into it in the future (I've only been in the country about 6 months). I just have a thing against the "personal trainer" label since it seems to carry bad vibes and an image I don't always like to associate myself with

I'll let Pman answer this for himself but just from my own personal experience of the trainers i've dealt with/observe when i'm at the gym 6 days a week..... so many just don't give a damn. I have seen probably 4 trainers in the years i've been gymming that you can tell actually are concentrating on their client and giving them the attention they are paying for and deserve.

For example, there have been many young overweight woman who i only see at the gym when they have a personal trainer with them (like 3 days a week), but after literally 6 months, they have normally put on weight/remained the same and their trainers just continue to give them the same old generic routines. This has happened to my friends and also to me when i first joined the gym (i got free PT sessions)- throughout the few sessions i had the PT just didn't put any thought or energy into it whatsoever.

In the end i know it just comes down to personal motiviation to get your ass to the gym and stick with it, but i just feel like a large majority of the trainers are kinda exploiting vulnerable and desperate people and giving them false hope...

On a less justified note, i also dislike the way they constantly watch me and how all the trainers at my gym went through a phase of coming up to me and asking me how i 'lost so much weight' etc etc. I always feel like saying "not with the help of any of YOU guys, thats for sure".... but no. I just smile politely.

End Rant. (Its my journal, i'll rant if i want too  )

Tuesdays Training: Rest Day

(kinda... Cardio: 8.5km 45 min run)

Tuesdays Diet

M1: 3 egg whites, 1 whole egg, tea, coffee

M2: 50g jerky, half protein bar

M3: salmon salad, tea

M4: protein brownie, apple

M5: beef stirfry

Thanks for the encouragement but I don't think i have much to be gained from putting up pics in terms of getting advice/critque. The most useful critque on this site is as to my actual diet and workouts. I don't plan on competing etc and to be honest, the feedback you got when you posted your pics up consisted primarily of "looking good, nice ass" (and you do have an amazing body btw, KUTGW  ) oh excluding some comments about having a good athletic baseline to start building on, which i guess is useful for you since you want to compete. I would potentially post them as 'progres pics' though. We will see.....

Funny you bring this up emmzies, Alot of people at my gym only come when they have a personal trainer, and it is ussually the overwieght ones, they always look like they havent improved much.

But their are 2 trainers at my gym who are very good, they do the diets, and give the clients good programs, and screenings. and update them regularly. I wouldnt mind one of them giving me a new programme, when i run out of ideas for my next one lol

Thanks fo your reply Emmzie, so basically what it comes down to is that you dont think too highly of CRAP personal trainers but not all trainers. Just like you get different quality of workmanship in all lines of work, you can have great trainers that dedicate their professional life to genuinely helping others, who are very knowledgable and experienced, and also you can have a lower quality trainer that realy as far as im concerned is not realy a personal trainer, and in most cases you find they are just gym staff with very limited knowledge and experience.

Emmzies summed up a lot of my feelings on the matter. A lot of it boils down to the fact that something that should be a professional kind of career really just...isn't.

In reality most gyms have a bunch of goofy jerks in a uniform that are "trainers", but in practice they don't care, as she said, and to be blunt, aren't educated enough or properly qualified to do the job. There's literally not a night that goes by that I don't see something that ranges the continuum from "wasting client's time" right on down to "holy shit something's about to explode".

And it's universal, too. Same goes in the States, in Australia, and I'm pretty sure it happens any other country with a similar practice. People lift weights for a year or play a sport in high school, go sit for a short certificate, and suddenly they're qualified to be experts in the subject, in the average person's eyes, when in reality they don't know much at all.

It's not all of them, no, and I'd never say that's the case. There's plenty of good trainers out there. The problem is at any given commercial gym, the ratio of good to bad is so poor that it's laughable and most people would be better off not bothering. That's what I mean when I say I don't want to be associated with the term.

I can rant on about this for hours, but I'd rather not clog the poor girl's journal ;)

Yup exactly! Like i said, i have seen 4 really impressive personal trainers that you can tell truly do dedicate their professional lives to helping others and i have seen their clients make some awesome improvements. Honestly i think it comes down to age and maturity.... well thats the general trend I've noticed. And sadly the majority of trainers are young and simply 'gym staff' like you said, which is what brings my general perception of them down. But yeah, i totally understand its completely unfair to stereotype them into all being as incompetent/useless/exploitive.

isnt that even more of a reason to post them up ? because you feel you have reached a point where you are happy with yourself and dont need any critique.

I think you missed my point. I never said i wasn't looking for critique and definutly have not reached my goals ( i wish  ), but i cannot see any substantial and constructive critique arising from me posting my pics. I'm not looking to build any particualar body like alot of the people are on here.

do you not think that you would get better advice if people actually knew where you currently are ?

At least your thinking about it at some stage.

And I didnt put those pics up for attention or a confidence boost and wasn't expecting comments such as "looking good, nice ass". The title of the thread was 'could I have some critique?', which is all I wanted. "Lookin good" isn't really what i'd call critique... however the rest of the info I received I have put to good use, which is what we're saying could be helpful for you. Just because you don't want to build lean mass like 99% of all the other people on here doesn't mean they cant give you some advice on your pics/progress visually. At the end of the day we all have one goal in common which is to look good. I was just sayin, but each to their own I guess.

Btw thanks for that brownie recipe.

No no no I didn't mean to insinuate thats why you put them up at all, thats just the kind of 'critque' thats most likely to be received it seems, but thats not exactly your fault lol. :pfft:

Yup i did realize that, but i also never claimed to be wanting to persue bodybuilding, as you may have noticed. I have yet to be kicked out of the forums for this though...

could be good motivation for the other ladies out there having a hard time reaching there goals.

Okay then, thats a fair enough cause! I can totally understand that. Purely for that reason, here is a 'progress pic' for 'progress' sake. I think thats probably the worst 'before' pic i can find right now. Oh well, best 'shock value' i guess. :pfft:
