POWERLIFTING INPUT FOR BEGINNER

BANNER

Recommended Posts

Ive been telling my training partner to get intosome powerlifting comps. I was wondering if those in the know could give me some feed back about his stats in terms of comparisons to current lifters. The feedback is more to let him know at what sort of levels he should shoot for to be competitve. Thanks for the input.

Height: 6' 4

Weight: 140kg

Age 23 years

Current Lifts: Squat: 250kgx 4 reps ( hasnt tried a 1 rep max yet) no belt or straps.

Bench: 230kgs x 4 reps (hasnt tried a 1 rep max)

Deadlift: 220kgs

Some quick input from me:

Under 24 allows him to compete as a junior, for which he'd be very competitive. As he's a super heavy weight (125kg+ in NZPF) he's up against Wookie in this class but leaps above anyone else.

Outside of juniors you've got some good lifters in this class, the best of which (Tonka IMHO) is totalling around 950ish.

Add a belt, wraps and squat suit I'd say your mate would be looking at nearer to 300kg squats if, and its a big if, he squats deep & takes the time to learn to use the equipment (the tighter you go the more you potentially get out of the suits, but it also makes it more hit or miss). Same goes for bench shirts, most get 20-40kg from them (with others getting more or less, very individual depending on build /strengths & weaknesses). However looking at the numbers bombing on bench these are probably more hit & miss than the squat suits.

His deadlift seems a little low in proportion, I'm assuming he has the classic "T-Rex" build (barrelly with shorter limbs - great for squat/bench, not so much fun for deads!). It's a little low for most SHW's but can be sorted if its an obvious weakness (often hammies) or biomechanical issue (may go sumo DL or change positioning).

Summarising the above your mate sounds strong for a junior and even at open level he'd be competitive regionally if not at national level. I agree he should give it a go if thats what he wants. Alternately with his height he could try strongman (but would need to increase his DL  ).

One final point, if he's assisted (or enhanced I think is the NZBB terminology), I wouldn't suggest he compete in NZPF who are staunchly 'drugfree' for lack of a better word. (IMHO NZPF is probably one of the cleanest strength sport organisations in the world, and at National level due to a full WADA compliant programme probably cleaner than many team sports in NZ).

Unfortunately for enhanced guys there are no other PLing orgs in NZ, however CAPO in Aussie run pretty good shows from what I hear?

Hope all of the above helps?

Nate

Nate's information is pretty good there. There's no doubt those are beastly numbers, and with some proper guidance he could be competitive internationally. I'm always suspect about squats and benches that big from relative no names. I'm not saying he does, but often people with bench and squats wayyyyy above their deadlift aren't squatting/benching to powerlifting standards, unless they have serious freak proportions.

Do the BBro,

Get a rude awakening and a true indication of where he is, this will set him up for next year.

Good advice all round. I'd seriously recommend anyone wanting to take up the sport head down to Powerhouse gym end of November to do Old Bull's meet.

If those numbers are legit (no bouncing/spotting on bench, squats to depth) and he's not on AAS, then he's doing great. I'd love to have that bench.

Usually drag n drop the file onto you desktop (some cameras will automatically dump files in other places anyway) then upload to youtube or similar site (free registration then really easy to upload).

Watch ur video on youtube & copy the URL. Use the Video tab on NZBB and paste URL.

Thats the easiest way I think?

Nate

PS Take squat footage side on, and at least some from thigh level (gives a better gauge of depth).
