Wow, they've changed the man cave around, and even bought some new bits and pieces out at J'ville. Went there on Friday morning before heading away for the weekend and got a bit of a surprise. All the squat racks and benches have been moved to the bigger side, which is nice (though it's the side with the TV which isn't so nice - luckily I was alone so could turn the crappy JUuice channel off!).

I think I like it. Apparently they have new cardio stuff upstairs too, new bikes and things, but I didn't notice. Wonder if they still have the scary old Smith machine. Must investigate further this weekend.

This year I will make a better effort than last year. Last year was fairly appalling actually, and I'm currently about 6kg heavier than usual, and only about half of that is due to Xmas

I still went to the gym regularly, and still kept my own training journal (just didn't really feel like duplicating it on here), but never really got back to the weights I was lifting prior to my 2009-10 Xmas/New Year holiday.

So this year the plan is to just be more consistent with the eating and the training. I think the eating threw me off the rails a bit - a few bikkies here and there turned out to be a regular thing. But I don't suit being fat, so I'm on a mission to drop that 6kg and get the training back on track.

In terms of training I just need to put in more effort. I'm still going, just getting slacker, and doing things like leaving spin after 4-5 tracks instead of doing the full seven (blaming work, but really it's just laziness).

So the plan will be to continue as normal in terms of the days of training, but to put more effort in when I'm there and to cut the crap out of my diet.

Lots of older women say that as you get older you have to make a choice between food and alcohol. Well, I'm not one of you highly disciplined types who never drinks, I like a nice glass of wine. So in order to fit that in, no more junk eating for me.

Normal plan:

Sat: quads/butt/hammies/calves

Sun: chest/tris/shoulders

Mon: spin

Tue: back and biceps

Wed: spin

Thur: maybe some abs if I haven't done enough, and any bits I want extra work on (triceps/shoulders most likely)

Fri: spin

True, thought it was! Do you walk into town from there?

I got on the same bus, usually catch the one about 15mins later but I always get there just after the 6.30 leaves so decided to wake up slightly earlier and try for that one. It's way busier than my usual so not sure if I'll stick to it!

Must try waking up a lot earlier and walking in though

Yeah, it's a nice flat walk to the Terrace from there. Used to do the full walk last year, down the gorge, but it's just too much of a time commitment, and Placemakers is great as it's just $1.60 from J'ville, so that's my standard stop if it's not raining.

True, the queue can be pretty long for the 6.30, but I always get a seat which is nice for a wee rest for the brief trip. I get the next one on rainy days (from home in Churton Park rather than trekking up the hill to J'ville) - I normally start at 7.30am but on a rainy day even leaving home later I still end up at work at 7am, way before most of my colleagues are even out of bed!

Decided I'm going to revisit the 5x5 to get myself statted again this year. I never really changed things up much last year, just kept plodding along doing the same thing the whole time, and never really got anywhere.

So to give myself a good kick up the arse I've looked back through my journal to find the 5x5 I did a couple of years back, which I'll start this weekend.

Not sure if it's going to go completely against what I'm meant to do on a 5x5, but I want to continue my spin classes as well. I think it's just one of the realities of aging that you just can't eat everything you did as a young one, it all shows, and cardio is just an essential thing that I'm going to have to do if I want to be able to continue eating, whether I like it not. Fortunately I really enjoy my spin classes, so I'll continue my Mon-Wed-Fri spin classes and fit my 5x5 around that - Sat or Sun (heavy), Tue (light) and Thur (medium).

Think I should turn up and "work the door" on those spin classes, make sure you don't bolt early

Nice to see the plan, CC - keep it up!

Hehe, I need someone to keep me in line! Today I did my first full class in about 2 months - I normally leave with one full track to go, but new year, new attitude, so I'm back to full classes.

The lunchtime classes are pretty good if you can make them. Dave on a Monday is pretty good, and I really like French Cathy on a Wednesday. Jury is still out on the Friday guy, but I've only had one full class with him.

Day one of my new 5x5 - heavy day. I should say 'heavy' day as really the weights were pretty pathetic, but still hard for me. But I had alongside me a printout of my starter weights from last time (about 1.5 years ago) and they were higher then - which just goes to show how slack I've been in the last year. But that's ok - no sense in killing myself on day one just because I've lost a bit of strength. It just means that the 5x5 is more needed than ever. And given how pleased I was with the last 5x5 I did, I'm sure I'll improve in no time.

Felt great starting something new. Really glad I did it today instead of tomorrow - technically I should be doing it on a Sunday if I'm doing Heavy - day off weights - light - day off weights - medium - two days off weights...but I knew we were having friends over for dinner and that I'd have a wee drinkie, so best to make sure my heavy workout is taken care of before that.

Current incentive is Sevens. Outfit ordered tonight. Somewhat skimpy. Legs on show. Legs currently nowhere near up to scratch. So no more drinkies (from tomorrow!) and solid good eating and training for the next three weeks!

So far so good. Oddly enough after day one (heavy) of my 5x5 my quads were in agony the next couple of days. Odd because normally on a Saturday I do legs, consisting of squats, SLDLs, lunges and maybe some lying leg presses as well for fun - and I don't normally have DOMS like that.

Just goes to show that doing just one exercise and giving it my all made a difference (though it has to be said that the weights weren't higher than normal - I think I just made a better effort at getting to parallel each time knowing that it was my only quads exercise of the day, which might be the point of difference).

So spin on Monday was bloody hard as the quads were still screaming. Light day yesterday, and will do spin today.

Sevens costume now chosen and ordered, and involves showing those thighs, so 3x squats per week and 3x spin classes are an absolute must from now til then!

Hmmm, having a rethink on the 3x spin classes due to the pain in my legs right now.

I've had a fantastic week on my new 5x5 programme, and have lost 2.7kg of my Xmas weight, now just need to shift as much as I can in the next 2 weeks so I don't shame myself in what I hope will be a skimpy Sevens outfit (not yet arrived, but the girl in the picture looks hot and I don't want to look hideous!).

But I think a day off spin today might possibly be a sensible thing. I've got DOMS galore after yesterday's medium day, and I've pretty much been hobbling about like an old woman all week with all the squats and spinning I've been doing. The sun has also been out (well, in a Wellington kind of way), so I've been able to walk about 1.5 hours each day to and from work.

So the world probably won't end if I skip a class. I feel very guilty though.

lost 2.7kg

Crikey that's good! Well done Miss cat!

yeah it sounds good, but really it was all two weeks of mince pies, licorice allsort lolly cake, booze and my mum's chocolate elairs. Oh, and a very large number of brandy snaps. It's amazing how quickly the weight drops off when you simply stop eating all that crap for a couple of weeks!

Today will be the last day of week 2 of my 5x5 and it's feeling great so far. I've been going hard - but also being sensible and took Friday off last week when I thought it was probably going to do more harm than good to push it when I'd been sore all week. Ended up following that day off with an excellent heavy day, so I think the day off was worth it.

In other news, my Sevens costume arrived yesterday - I thought it would be about mid thigh, but it barely covers my butt  ! So yep, will be going hard out with the squats and spin classes for the next week :pfft: . I certainly won't look as good as our very own Sheta in her famous Indian squaw costume back in the day, but I'll try to rock my costume to the best of my ability.
