Around 550, but it depends how heavy and tall you are, and how fit you are.

I'm 1.7m, 68kg

Hmmm, I'm a wee bit shorter and lighter, so I guess maybe I'd be closer to 500 then - looking forward to finding out tomorrow!

Oh shit, I'm 5"1 and a half and 52kgs. Crap lol not looking too good for me then

It will be slightly less but it does depend on your heart rate. It'll measure you burning your most calories when your heart rate is highest, so if you're quite unfit you'll be burning a lot more

Well well well, now this is a surprise. My pump workout turns out to be a less efficient way of burning calories than my heavy weights day, and only marginally more efficient than a light weights day.

Here's the evidence:

Pump class, 49 mins 346 calories, 174 max, 135 average (7.06 cals per min)

Light day, 54 mins 376 calories, 165 max, 133 average (6.96 cals per min)

Heavy day, 54 mins 400 calories, 173 max, 138 average (7.4 cals per min)

So basically I get a better workout pretty much all round by doing a heavy weight day. Who knew? Looking forward to Friday to do a medium day to complete my research!

I'm genuinely surprised though, as I feel like I work harder for longer in a pump class, with all the 5 minute squats and so on rather than shorter bursts of heavier exertion. I certainly get sweatier and redder in the face during a pump session than a heavy weight session.

I'd also be interested to see how many calories you burn in a pump class?? I do pump quite a bit at my gym. What kind of weights are your norm for a class?

At the moment I'm not going to classes very often, so weights are down slightly: squats 20kg, chest 10kg, back 10kg, triceps 10kg (ok, oddly those weights are up compared to the others!), and biceps 5kg. Other weights depend on what instructor is on and whether it's lunges or shoulders. I'll let you know. Becbec has been using hers in pump classes, but she also does cardio at the end so it's difficult to know how many of the calories were in the class alone.

Your weights are similar to mine, at the moment mine are at

Squats 25kg

Chest 12kg

Back 15kg (But by the end of the track my forearms are screaming, specailly if it's a long one, not sure why either? Im not squeezing the bar too heavy as im conscious of that) Hmmmm? Maybe i should take some weight off but i also feel like im really working at the current weight...

Triceps 10kg

Biceps 7kg (Biceps is one muscle group I can't seem to go up in, in a class, but I can easily push out 3x15kg when im working on the floor)

Lunges 12kg

Shoulders - I just normally use 2.5kg plates after all the bloody pushups :)

moratti girl your not the average gym goer though you are probably the fittest girl in our gym and as such you need to work extra hard to burn those calories its a spin off of being so super fit you need to work much much harder to fatigue.....I think the gym needs an advanced class but trouble is who would take the class lol.

Interesting thought re advanced class - but don't advanced people just up their weights? I found that I could only 'advance' so far using that method though - I did pump a few times a week for about 8 years, but only really managed to get to just over the weights I'm currently doing. I'd try to increase further, but could never manage a full track on the new weights. Moving to doing big boys weights, I've made a lot of progress, but now I suck at pump

I think it's more about the cardiovascular fitness versus strength trade-off...

If you train for pump, then I'd expect you to make gains - but probably in CV fitness, not in strength - as a function of the rep range.

If you train with (comparatively) low reps for strength/ hypertrophy/ muscle tone, like 3x 12s, or whatever, you're going to find doing a pump class's worth of squats, lunges, presses etc (upwards of 80 or 90 reps per muscle group) a bit difficult

A few weeks back I did a pump class as 'cardio' after a regular workout, and just about killed myself on lunges with an aluminum bar and a pair of 10kg plates.... just my 2c worth :)

That is interesting CC, I totally agree with you as far as feeling like I've worked harder in Pump than on the floor! And yep same, I am way sweatier in Pump, I haven't had sweat dripping off my elbows when I'm doing squats on the gym floor yet! Altho in saying that I do enjoy the heavier weight sessions too and going by your research they are more beneficial!!

"Probably" TT pfft  You know it lol. Nah um jokes aside. I don't think I could advance any more than what I'm doing in a Pump class, well yup sure I could increase my weight but in doing so, like CC said wouldn't be able to complete the track....

I'd be keen for someone to take some Crossfit Classes, now thats HARD OUT!!

Aaaaaa another reason for me to keep dodging the cardio, good research CC! Your energy is best spent liftering IMO!

Mine are a bit higher

Leg day, 9.8 cals per min

Back/Shoulders, 9.9 cals per min

Step Class, 12.4 cals per min

Attack Class, 12.2 cals per min

so there's a tad of a difference between mine

Becbec, do you do BodyCombat classes at all? Wonder what kinda cals you'd burn in those? Probably not as much as in Step i'd imagine

Nah, I can't manage the kicks cause of my rheumatoid

Oh ok, thats a shame. I really enjoy those classes, another great cardio sess, although in doing them I think they give me a false sense of thinking I can take on anyone when i'm out on the piss

Only people that rark me up tho or bitches that try hit on my man :naughty:

Wow, there's certainly been a flurry of activity in my journal since I left work yesterday!

It's funny though - I never even thought of pump as a cardio class til Canty Girl (I think) mentioned that's how they were taught to view it in class instructor training land. For 8 years I thought I was avoiding cardio by doing pump!

I haven't had sweat dripping off my elbows when I'm doing squats on the gym floor yet!

Ah yes, the old sweaty elbows. I don't feel like I've worked hard in a pump squat track if my elbows aren't dripping - but yep, I don't get that doing my 5x5s

I agree - but the problem is that I really do enjoy a pump class! I guess as long as it's additional to my proper programme and doesn't interfere then it's ok to chuck one in every week or two. But when I want to cut I guess I'll have to do more than just add some pump classes to my workouts. Grr!

Clearly I need to work harder. Or grow a couple of cms! Do you ever do spin classes Becbec? I'm curious about how many calories I'd burn in one of those - surely it must be a decent amount since I'm a disgusting sweaty mess and feel like my heart is going to burst out of my chest during those classes. I'll probably leave it til later in the year when I cut though - no sense in doing any more cardio than absolutely necessary!

In other news, my arms are in agony this morning. I already had serious tri DOMS from doing skullcrushers o n Monday, then did more yesterday in class, so my tris are completely fried. But my biceps are also really sore, which is unusual - even after heavy lifting (by my standards :pfft: ) I don't normally feel DOMS in the biceps, and now after a pissy pump class at 7.5kg (dropped to 5kg halfway through) my biceps are screaming at me. Go figure. Perhaps I'll anesthetise (sp) with a glass of wine at our work's social club quiz night tonight :shifty:

Yep, I normally burn between 520-560 depending on the instructor, in a 45 min session

You went to Aotea College (yes I did a quick FB browse). Me too!

No way! That's funny - I guess I was a decade or so before you - but I know that some of the teachers who were there back in my day were still there up til recently. Mrs Clark for one - Manu - she was my form teacher in 3rd form.

It's funny now because my friend who I went to Aotea with now lives in Papakowhai with her family, and her husband teaches there and her oldest daughter will be going there next year!

HR isn't 100% accurate as a measure of calorie expenditure, especially not when comparing modes of exercise.

There are different energy systems involved which can affect calorie burn and partitioning between aerobically-dominant exercise and more anaerobic forms of work.
