You could try straps and try one hand overhand and the other underhand, you used to DL didn't you? What has changed from then to now?

Yup, about a year ago I did. I had that massive flare up of my arthritis when I got the flu so I think there might have been a little damage done :(

Becbec, ya know the back track in Pump... how we do deadlifts (altho we not putting the weight on the floor) they are still called deadlifts aren't they?

I had someone question me about it tonight and now im not so sure??

Yeah they are but they're for lower back rather than legs so i guess they're half deadlifts?! I dunno :-s

I hate being on hold on the phone! I've resorted to calling Studylink from my cellphone now because it seems to be directed straight away so I don't have to listen to Dave "F***ing" Dobbyn for half an hour!!

Yup! DOMS always make me feel like i've had a good workout

Ooo, I spose i should share with everyone i'm starting my nursing training in 2 weeks

On the hunt for second hand textbooks so if anyone knows anyone or knows someone who knows someone who knows someone who has any nursing textbook, pretty please PM me

Yeah, I call them stiff legged deads. Until I started lifting outsde of pump class I didn't realise they weren't just plain old deadlifts since that's what the instructors always call them - but then I noticed the guys differentiating between SLDLs and plain deadlifts in their journals. The pump ones (SLDLs) target hammies more than back - I always used to get confused after I'd come back from holiday, do a pump class, get told I was doing a back track, then have stupidly sore hammie DOMS for the next few days and couldn't work out why

Ahhhh so thats what SLDL stands for? Im still getting to know all the lingo for different things on here, sore hammies after "back track" yeah fully aye CC.

And yep the instructors do call them deadlifts, thats why i was confused?

So yup they are a deadlift just a different type of dead, thanks guys :)

My 2c worth (sorry for the thread-jack Becbec!) - if you're doing deadlifts in a back track, and you've got your knees locked, then the class instructor sucks...

There's quite a lot of difference in technique - but to work back you really need knees well unlocked.

Doing a stiff-leg properly should hit hamstrings hard - whereas real deadlifts would get lower back first. Maybe Vee can explain the difference better than I can.

I suspect part of it's that, in order to fit class choreography, it doesn't suit to lift from the floor, as opposed to from the hang (it would make it hard to combine deadlifts and dead-rows, for example).

I don't think I'd blame the instructor - I've done pump classes in at least 4 different gyms, including overseas and including Les Mills, and also a zillion different instructors, and every one of them refers to that particular track as the back track - you are doing 'deadlifts' and bentover rows, and now they also tend to add in clean and press. At all times I've been encouraged to keep legs relatively straight. I can't explain it well, but now that I know the difference between SLDL and regular dead, I've always been veered towards SLDLs in pump classes regardless of instructor.

It would be great to hear Cantygirl's take on this since she instructs. Are you there Cantygirl??
