Negative Influenes

You continually read that he key to a lot of lifters success is the ability and requirement to remove all negaive influences from your life, to remove those things that will dicredit your training and results and eliminate those that will hold you back.

This may be easy for friends , co-workers, bad foods and stuff that is easy to distance yourself from, but what if it's family or loved ones. I know of people who have split from girlfriends because they aren't supportive or understanding, but what about wives and families, children, work schedules?

What sacrifices have you had to make to realise your potential as a lifter? What strategies did you employ, what obstacles did you overcome andhow?

Just thought I'd throw an issue in there that rings true to me butlso must be something we all encounte at some point.....

mine is work - i eat clean, train hard, but getting up at 3am every morning is just a prick. its never occured to me to be a problem until i started lookin after myself and realised my work is holding me back. i love my industry, and ive got my trade cert, but i want to have a different job before end of year...

The time it took me to get to and from work made it almost impossible to train, so we looked at finances and juggled a bit and I was able to change jobs, now work two part time jobs closer to home instead.

We don't have the dollars we used to have but the lifestyle improvement was worth it!

It was a tough and scary choice at the time but there are definitely no regrets now.

Maybe it's cause we are near 50 amd you just reach and age where you just have to say "stuff it, happiness first!"

Does this apply to BB'ers?

Shawn Ray I think used to surround himself with positive people cause negative thoughts and feelings are catabolic due to the hormone released...?

My misses doesn't support what I do so I've solved it in another way.

Instead of me coming home and saying "A guy came up to me and said wow", or "Mr X thinks I could win x,y,z", or "I pressed 1,000,00kg tonight" ... I leave all that in the gym now.

I'd rather talk to her about it so she knows how cool I think it is but the reality is she isn't interested and telling her about it would only re-inforce that by hearing her negative response.

Now I think it's better in fact, if I do slip out something BB related at least she isn't already sick of hearing about it.

And as Optimass said and others probably agree, there are other roles in life people want from you (father, husband, workmate etc) and Lifter/ BB'er might not be one of those.

I used to preach that BB'ing was a way of life, you lived it, and I really did for 6 years as a single guy ... until I saw a doco (has anyone seen it) where the 50-yr old hippy looking dude lives in his van outside Golds Gym and is still living in the Arnold-era (yet even Arnolds moved on!). Funny but slightly true sometimes.

Yeh thats the doco. The guy was actually one of the arm wrestlers on Over The Top. Now he lives outside Gold's Gym in his van and when asked about what he would say to people that would say "The dreams over man your 50 years old" he replied "...there the ones who are short sighted, Now in six months i could still be in the van..but if i can outlift everyone, i can outsquat them, out bench them, outdeadlift them, whos the king?....guys like you and me can train and fullfill our dreams...game aint over...the sun is shining...and it aint over..."

Pretty extreme.

He is acting like an addict ( I guess most BB's are to some extent)

He truely believes that if he can out lift people all his problems will be solved.

lol :pfft:

but, if he's having fun good on him.

I agree with android

As you wish to fulfill your lifting or BB'ing dream so does you wife or kids have theirs, being the man in the house they respect your interest in it the most IMO, if they don't feel your only fixated on your own dream then they will give you more space to live yours. Otherwise live your dream in your own world, then it becomes something you can escape to whenever you hit the gym.

My obstacle at current is my IT job, being on standby and a learning curve almost 24/7 and two guys resigned in our team....... I tried to gym with my misses but our goals are not in line and she is enrolling again to a ballet school to finish her final ballet exam...I will listen to her ballet stories and hopefully she will listen to whatever I have to tell...

mm darn IT jobs.

I guess my current situation isnt so much of a negative influence more like a major life even that just totally messes you up to the point where you can't even think or live properly any more. Everything suffers then including gym time.

WTF! :-s Luigi where is your mind at??? Laurasaur says owning a gym would be her perfect job, I say that it is "possible", in other words she could own a gym if that's her dream (know the meaning of the word "encouragement"? check a dictionary!) and you come up with "he's trying to get you to do dirty things for money". What sort of life have you been leading? Where does a stupid comment like that come from? :naughty:

My job.. working in financial markets.. especially with this mess ... most average days start work between 7 - 7:30 am and finish at 7 - 7:30 pm ....

Weekends... you guessed it... just to keep up, you can managed another 5 hours at work .....

And then couple of months in a year its always worse and you can expect to work 14 - 18 hour days if you're getting deals done....

then all the stress of it.. being accountable for your decisions...

gets to you....

add to that the industry involves a certain amount of "macho-ism" -fitting in with colleagues, clients and industry peers means heavy boozing into the wee hours of the morning in some screwy strip joint....

talk about testosterone depletion ...
