You get the press command on Bench when the bar is at a controlled stop on your chest. Sometimes it can take a long time. Have a look at this video. It's of Travis Ortmayer who is a pro strongman from the states. Watch the bar on his 1st attempt and see how long the pause was. He was even lucky to get the press command when he did.

No pause in the squat.

That pause would really f*ck you up. Waiting that long would kill your myotatic reflex almost completely.

Hi Al,

It would seem that way, it takes out between 7.5-15kgs in a touch and go BP.

The stretch reflex lasts up to about 1.5 seconds, you have ample time long as you have the bar in control, it is when you haven't that you lose the reflex.

There are a few ways to invoke the Stretch Reflex, the more common way in most gyms is to drop the bar fast, sink into the chest and push back up fast, which is and looks like bouncing.

A normal touch and go bench press (without a bounce) can be performed under control and at resonable speeds and you can still take advantage of the reflex.

A powerlifter loads up as he brings the bar down to his/her chest, creating a good stretch reflex then explodes back up taking advantatge of this reflex.

As most people are use to a short reflex we as PLs take advantage of the time in a reflex.

Powerlifting is not about the weight it is all about time.
