waldo
I still can't quantify this text spelling thing. Blatant disregard for the English language, as well as an indication that users of that type of lingo didn't give a shit in school.Excuse me for sounding prudish, but it's just what I think. frogie2001
don't worry about sounding prudish. I just get sick of shop signs doing it too. my sister in law writes emails with it and it takes me twice as long to read and decode. still the english language is constantly changing and always has, so this might be the step in the evolution

Pseudonym
It's true text speak is nearly impossible to skim-read. I think one of the reasons people use it is that they're not great skim-readers to start with, so they don't understand how much of a difference good writing can make. The thing that concerns me most is the loss of access to information. Now that we live in a digital age, and search engines catalogue every word that is said, we become more reliant on those words being typed accurately. If a word is not recognised, it can't be catalogued properly. If it's not catalogued, it can't be found. We rely on search engines, and search engines rely on people spelling correctly. 2guns
my sister in law writes emails with it and it takes me twice as long to read and decodeyeah, and if she did it so it was easy for yr small mind to read it would probably take her twice as long :pfft:
Flex
There's a few theories upon how humans read text. The most agreed on being that we read the shape of words rather than the actual words and letters themselves. I think the human brain reads something like 3 or 4 words at once. If you close one eye when reading you'll notice that your eye moves along blocks of text rather than scanning each word and that's why you can skim read. I guess those that grow up recognising txt language find it pretty easy to understand but will eventually probably find reading a book in normal english difficult. That's why you can do things with normal text like in the image below and still read it however it doesn't seem to work too well with txt spk, and also wHy rEaDiNg TeXt lIkE tHiS iS sO dIfFiCuLt. AlBundy
Haha yea those kind of pictures are buzzy managed to read the top one instantly, second one took a few extra seconds.I guess it also depends on a few other things. People that write papers and stuff for uni are probably pretty fast touch typers anyway and used to needing correct spelling, so typing out whole words is probably easier than converting to txt speak for some people. The only reason it exists is because of the character limit on txt messages and the fact that with phones you have to press alot of buttons. Can't say it bothers me to much but if it's a giant cube of text typed in txt speak then I probably wont read it.
