Losing muscle

I know you can't spot reduce fat, but I have a question about losing muscle... If you "overdid" it cardio-wise and started losing muscle, would it depend on what sort of cardio you were doing as to what muscle you'd be losing first, or is it the same concept as with fat reduction and you'd just lose it wherever you lost it?

If you hammer the shit out of your legs I reckon you can lose muscle from them witht the cardio in a calorie reduced diet.

You reckon? My guess would have been quite the opposite - that you would lose muscle from all over. The reason you would lose muscle is if your body needs to find extra energy to fuel it through that marathon cardio session you've just forced it to do. The usual reserves are empty, so it starts cannabalising its own muscle for fuel. In that situation, I don't imagine it would be too picky about which muscle it comes from.

Having said that, I really have no idea. That's just my reasoning. It's a great question, Kookoo. Anyone else want to weigh in with their theories?! :D

quiet the oppisite actually. think about when you break your arm or leg and you cant use it (eg in a cast), what happens to the muscle?? it wastes away. so if you had a calorie reduced deit you would loose from all over but if you didnt use a certain muscle it would waste alot quicker.

were you wanting to try something to reduce a muscle size kookoo?

Well I guess in a week I'm not going to be able to do much, but it would be good to know anyway... I can definitely afford to lose some size (muscle) from my legs but want to retain as much as possible in my upper body.

Hit the bike and sprints and stairs hard and your legs will give a little away. Believe me I've seen it.

very true, just like weights, your muscles only need to be the size of the stimulus, keep up some intensity and ul be fine. i stoped doing weights while i trained for a marathon, and my legs went so thin.
