virgo1978
How long does it take for your body to switch over to Ketosis when dieting?
Flex
It will depend on what kind of ketogenic diet your are doing, how low you've dropped your carbs, what your previous carb intake was and how much exercise you are doing. Normally within 3-5 days or so. There's a few signs to watch out for like keto breath where you get a strange sweet odour on your breath. My sweat also used to change odour (badly) as well. You should be able to get keto sticks from a chemist or low carb shop then you can test the ketone level in your urine to ensure that you remain in ketosis. You'll also know when your training starts to suffer. I used to find cardio was terrible when in ketosis, weight training wasn't too bad as long as the duration wasn't too long.

Dumbelldog
How long does it take for your body to switch over to Ketosis when dieting?Taken from 2Guns linkHow Long Before I Achieve Ketosis? Our bodies are able to store a two-day supply of glucose in the form of glycogen. Accordingly, after just two days of consuming no more than 30 grams of carbohydrate per day most achieve Ketosis on day three of the program. Pseudonym
How flexible is it? Wouldn't even the occasional cheat meal kick you out of ketosis?
Marcus
Dave Palumbo uses a keto type diet with his clients with higher fats. He advocates one cheat meal a week & says it takes about 24 hours to get back into ketosis I think.

Dumbelldog
well.....i'm doing it and it's not to bad at all!!really, ok.so wat r u eating? lol wats yr secrets to eating zero carbs and feeling ok?You don't need to eat zero carbs 2g's generally you need to eat less than 30 grams a day, say a half cup of oats in the morning for breakfast then no more grain or starchy carb that day, fiberous ones are ok. I'm doing this at the moment and feel fine, if you do it right you will actually get an appetite decrease which maskes it fairly easy for the first few weeks anyway. I agree it takes a full carb up 24 hrs or more to slip back out of ketosis so a cheat (high clean carb meal) once a week shouldn't do any harm. But I can't give away any more of my secrets, or everyone will be doin it!

joelbell
a few people writing about feeling o.k while on very low carbs. I think it just takes time to adapt. i know quite a few people who actually feel way better once they become adapted to burning fat. stu mittleman who ran 1000 miles in 11 days, and 2 marathons a day for 56 days straight used to eat a carb dominant diet, but once he switched to a diet of fatty fish, meat, feta cheese, nuts, good fats, and green leafy vegetables he felt better than before, and broke his records living on low carb diets. Lyndon
that was good info thanks 2guns, should of thought of it myself but lack of carbs equals lack of brain power!!...the brain prefers ketones as a source of energy and runs better on them... Lyndon
also kfc original recipe is average 4 carbs per piece and 200 calories , excellent for keeping on low carb and enjoying junk food also a triple cheese and bacon burger from burger king and wipe the sauce off with the bun and bif it is awesome just got to watch the salt if your like me and retain water like a sponge! but all good for a keto 'cheat' i like to have one cheat a week at go to a buffet and just have fun , or just eat carbs only when its unavoidable like out with mates or at family things. He advocates one cheat meal a week & says it takes about 24 hours to get back into ketosis I think.yup and as his cliets need to get even leaner closer to a comp he cuts the fat and the carbs so its basically just greens and protein (no dairy)since the body is using fat as its prime energy source to convert to ketones , the elimination of dietary fat the body then uses body fat as its preferred energy source and therefore u are dieting as hard as humanly possible.arnlod did similar methods following from vince gironda methods of the steak and eggs diet and every so often ud just have just high protein days (no fat no carbs) for dramatic fat loss.works a charm but is Farking boring , egg whites , chicken breast , tuna etc gets tired quick. But for a comp ud have that motivation to pull it off.General keto eating or cyclical eating is excellent as u get the best foods of both worlds but can maintain/lose weight way easier and the carb up glycogen compensation is unreal i believe if u struggle with fat then u have an insulin 'over'excretion compared to skinny folk who 'under'secrete insulin, then keto is the way to go.
