A basic list of what it all does

I've been looking around at supplements, and looking around at this site as well, and a lot of the questions are along the lines of "what do you think of this supplement?" That's fine, but to those (like me) who haven't taken supplements before, what's really missing - or at least what I can't find anywhere, is a very basic list - not of specific branded products - but of basic types of products and what they are for.

When i find descriptions of specific branded products, all I see is "This is the best product in the whole world, it will make you into He-man, it contains wxyz and abcd, blah blah blah." It's utterly useless, because it's all just advertising to people who already know what they should be looking for.

What I'm after is something like this:

Here's a list of the main types of supplements that weight trainers / bodybuilders take, and here's why they take them:

Protein supplements:

Protein does this: (insert description here)

Creatine:

Creatine does this:

It is useful under the following circumstances:

NO Supplements:

Nitrous Oxide supplements do this:

It is useful under the following circumstances:

etc.

Is there anything like that, set out in a simple format on one page anywhere? I only gave three examples, but I'm looking for one that lists quite a few supplements, so that I can understand basically what I'm looking at and what might be useful when I read about specific products out there.

Thanks for any advice.

That seems to presuppose I know what each one is - and I don't. I'm looking for something that contains a basic list and description of the main types of supplement that it is helpful to know about, and what they do. Currently, I don't even know what is on the list, except protein, creatine and NO, and I only know a little about what creatine and NO do.

Again... that presupposes that I even know what these things are. I don't know what is on the list, so I do not know what to enter into Google. If I just enter words like "bodybuilding supplements," as you can imagine, I get a mammoth load of results that is simply indigestible.

So I guess you don't know of any good basic resource like the one I'm describing?

If you're just starting out, stick to protein powder & good food (and a good multi-vitamin).

Once you've been training a few weeks (6-12) then maybe throw some creatine in the mix.

Protein = amino acids that make up your muscles.

Creatine = Helps supply extra energy to muscle & nerve cells, apart from supplementation, red meat is a good source.

NO (Nitric Oxide) = signals the muscle around blood vessels to relax thus allowing the vessels to dialate and help increase bloodflow around the body - can also cause spontaneous hard-ons (don't wear your lycra shorts to the gym). The increased blood flow can give you larger "pumps" from working out & most NO products contain large amounts of caffeine so you'll feel pretty alert too.

Personally, I only ever take a NO sup if I've had a crap sleep the night before a workout. That shit leaves quite a few toxins in your system and you become immune using it if doing it regularly anyway (you really should cycle the stuff).

The 3 main supps worth worrying about are Protein, Mens-Multi & Creatine.

LOL - I aint gonna call anyone stupid. But you're not really getting my point. My point is that I'm trying to find out about which supplements I should know about and why I should know about them. Googling stuff that I already know about won't help me do that, and since I'm trying to find out which supplements I should know about and what they do, I can't enter them into Google, because I don't yet know what they are!

This topic is fucking stupid....
OK... nice flaming.
If you don't what these things are or what you are looking for, why the hell would you be looking for them or trying to find information on them??

So that I can find out what they are and what they do. Obviously I don't need to know about everything under the sun, but I'm assuming there's a basic list of supplement types that most folk here basically understand. I was just asking if there's a simple info site out there for people like me who want to come to grips with the low down on what the main supplement types are.

Their are a shitload of supplements out there...if you wana know more about a certain type...google it!!
Saying "Google it" presupposes that I already know the names of them. I don't, since I'm trying to find out what the main ones are, as I don't yet know. Look, if you don't want to help, or can't, then that's OK, but there's no need for the attitude. One of the things I like about this site is the friendly and helpful approach people take, in sharp contrast to your post.

Thanks - so you don't recommend more fancy things like Norateen and the like?

I just checked out the Norateen website....

Whenever I see a statement like this:

"THERE IS NOTHING ELSE LIKE THEM, UNLESS YOU WANT TO TAKE STEROIDS"

I can't help but

Stick to your basics. Maybe experiment with this crap later on but don't go out & waste hard earned $$$ on something expecting it to give you "steroid like results".

If you want steroid like results, take steroids.

Yeah, sensational lines like that just make me say "OK, so I can't trust what I'm reading."

Try Body Building .com

Go to http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/bbmainsupp.htm

It lists objectives - ie FAT LOSS, MASS GAIN, etc

Under each objective the site lists prducts to help - ie caffine then links you to all related articals ... then go for gold and educate yourself!

Hey thanks, that looks like a good resource.

Thanks also to Paul for your comments. And a big thanks to the guy from Impact Nutrition who sent me that info by email in response to this thread.
