Muscle 'pump' how necessary do you think it is for growth?

the pump you reffer to is blood going to the working muscle to supply it with nessacary fuel and trying to clear acid forming etc. you should feel it when working out if your intensity is hard enough, if not your you need to up your intensity.

only exeption could be reps less then 3 with long rest, you may not get that pump sensation. larger muscles you may not feel it as intensly as smaller ones.

cool, so what exactly is it about the 'pump' that makes muscles grow bigger? is it due to using up the glycogen, then the body overcompensates by filling the muscle with more glycogen and fluid stores? arnold says that he thinks a lot of bodybuilders are weaker than they look because there muscles are filled with glycogen and water. any thoughts?

I agree. I've found that I get that "pumped" feeling when doing medium weights for higher reps, as opposed to heavy weights for lower reps. Does it really help in terms of your bodycomp progress though? It only seems to last for a few minutes dry.gif

The pump is just as NZPT explained - extra blood flooding the muscles, fueling them & clearing out acid etc.

It's not necessarily the "pump" that makes muscles grow bigger - it's more a response to the actual stress put on the muscle - it's the small tears in the muscle tissue that are created from exertion and heal that actually increase the size of your muscles, the excess blood helps with recovery by feeding them.

Don't get too hung up on Arnold mate - a lot of scientific research has taken place since he was in his prime (no disrespect to the guy).
