Sorry!

This site is in read-only mode right now. You can browse all our old topics (and there's a lot of them) but you won't be able to add to them.

Where is everyone

^ This.

Over the last few months we've averaged 18,000 visitors, and ~100,000 pages viewed (although that always fluctuates a bit over Christmas/January).

So the question we need to ask is not, "Where is everyone?" - they're still here. The question is, "Why are those people not talking any more?"

We can't blame the technology now. It's taken literally years of development, but we've finally got this site running on modern, mobile-friendly software. We're now in a position to start adding all the cool stuff I've wanted to add for so long. But we need a community to do it for.

Wookie's right. We ALL have to start new topics, jump into discussions, and reply to the newbies. It's the snowball effect... The more people are posting, the more people will post.

So guys, stop your lurkage! Start talking, and let's get this community buzzing again!

PS - we're working on the competition and social media side of things, too. Got any ideas for a quick comp to get us started?

He's now focusing on his violin playing and education and realizes all the pic posting and open conversations about his steroid usage might come haunt him in his serious life :)

good point actually, probably best to delete posts about using non prescribed controlled medicines when hoping to be accredited to issue said controlled medicines in a few years haha

Am one of the fore mentioned lurkers who no longer posts a lot. The fact that if you post something controversial you have to  be willing to put in the time to back it up if people disagree means a lot of people who used to post a lot now just don't have the time. Ive noticed as well what I like to call "the facebook effect" (although maybe this is just my imagination) where over the last couple of years people spend so much time "scrolling" on social media and clicking on things with short bites of info that grab their attention is slowly lowering peoples attention span. Ive found that if I post on my page anything longer that a sentence or two it gets very few likes. To actually read through an entire post and then follow the thread and keep up with what everyone is saying, takes an amount of concentration and commitment that people these days just cant be bothered with.

With social media people can scan down and glimpse 30 different events or subjects in 60 seconds so the mind is constantly entertained and stimulated from dozens of different angles. And this is becoming peoples new "normal". So people come on here and scan over the posts (lurk) but are not willing to commit the time to actually post.

I fear that the days of deep complex discussions that used to take place on this type of forum just a few years ago may be behind us.

That's a really interesting point.

I have wondered if there's a better way of displaying the information on the front page - maybe to make it more "Facebooky". I think there's still a place for in-depth discussion, and a forum like ours can do that better than Facebook. But you're right in saying that people are now used to scrolling through a feed, so maybe that's a better way of presenting our topics to them as well?

Our new Activity Streams feature is kind of similar to what I'm thinking of. Has anyone used it yet? What do you think?

I find it really handy Pseudo. I more use the Unread Content Stream on my phone as it's basically constantly logged in and whenever I jump on I just refresh the Unread page and can see the new stuff I've missed quite easily rather than scrolling all through the site.

The activity stream seems to show everything including when people like posts etc which is cool but unnecessary I think, but I mean it probably just automatically happens as it logs everything on the site.

Much easier on mobile with those streams too I must say though.
